Just wondered if anyone else had seen this series? Series 1 is on Prime but Series 2 is currently on Sky. It’s won various awards and has great reviews. Series 1 was set in Hawaii, series 2 is set in Sicily. So it’s worth watching for the scenery, the music and the costumes. Jennifer Coolidge is in both series and Tom Hollander is in series 2. It’s about the goings on a luxury hotels. It is both dramatic and hilarious. Must be one of the best things I’ve seen this year. I was disappointed when it ended!

We watched both series, yes, very watchable.

argymargy Thu 15-Dec-22 07:28:28

As it’s finished now, you may want to ask for “no spoilers”, vegansrock!

dragonfly46 Thu 15-Dec-22 07:32:59

I am afraid I found it quite dark. I may be a prude but I also found some of the explicit scenes unnecessary and were designed to shock.
It had a good storyline though.

Urmstongran Thu 15-Dec-22 07:43:09

I’ve been binge watching it & I've got the very last episode to watch tonight! I’ve really enjoyed it all. Rich folk on holiday. People are people - it’s like Benidorm just with more affluence! Loved it. People with or without money have family tensions, insecurities, addictions. No matter the money you have (or not) you can only sit on one chair at a time, in one room, reading one novel with one glass of something delicious to sip! It’s a great leveller. I think that’s why wherever I am, I’m never envious of those with great wealth. This series has been brilliant the best thing I’ve watched on Sky Atlantic in ages. It’s seen me through the World Cup anyway!
😁

I also watched it all. It is dark and I agree about the sexually explicit stuff. I don't want to see that. I was sorry about the ending. Not giving a spoiler though. Will wait to see what Urmstongran thought. I do love seeing dramas in beautiful locations though.

dragonfly46 Thu 15-Dec-22 08:00:46

Yes must say loved the scenery in Sicily.

Aveline not just the sex!

MerylStreep Thu 15-Dec-22 08:10:09

I’ll give it a look as we are going to Hawaii next year.
Is it just about life in a hotel or do you see some of the islands.

merlotgran Thu 15-Dec-22 08:12:54

Thanks for this. It’s going on my list!

vegansrock Thu 15-Dec-22 09:33:18

I thought the hotel manager Armand in season 1 was hilarious! Couldn’t believe what he did in that suitcase!

vegansrock Thu 15-Dec-22 09:58:42

merylstreep series 1 had a bit of a theme with the cultural differences between the Hawaiian staff and the rich hotel residents. Nice views of the islands and lots of Hawaiian music.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 15-Dec-22 10:43:06

I loved the first series, have only watched episode one of the second series I am saving it until I have an empty house

Urmstongran Thu 15-Dec-22 10:53:38

You won’t be disappointed GG13 (👋 pen pal) it’s equally as good. I didn’t think it’d be possible with different actors and location but it just is!

vegansrock you have to remember Armand had spiralled out of control (drugs/alcohol) by that stage and knew the writing was on the wall for him anyway. By then, he was past caring and reckless. Look how particular he was about every little detail when the guests first arrived!

In the first series I loved the ‘social awareness’ comments by the woke daughter and her friend and the mother’s ‘no nonsense’ rebuttals. Hilarious!

Doodledog Thu 15-Dec-22 10:56:34

I'm going to have to watch it now to see what Armand does in the suitcase grin.

Urmstongran Thu 15-Dec-22 10:57:47

Apologies for SPOILERS.
On the other hand it is a discussion about a series that was first aired four years ago.
Perhaps those who haven’t seen it might want to swerve the thread.
Otherwise no actual reviews can take place other than ‘yes it was good’ or ‘I plan to watch it’.

Urmstongran Thu 15-Dec-22 12:27:38

I cracked up at the grandfather’s line “it’s a penis, not a sunset!”.
🤣

The, ahem, “sunset” line is one of Bert’s, in which he’s making the point that the male member has never been considered an object of beauty.)

Abraham, who plays Bert, 83, is an Oscar-winning actor revered as much for his classical theatre work as for his parts in films by edgy directors such as Wes Anderson, Gus Van Sant and the Coen Brothers.

Oldbat1 Thu 15-Dec-22 12:33:25

Interesting watch. Loved the scenery.

GrandmasueUK Thu 15-Dec-22 18:23:37

I’ve been following the thread about this on mumsnet. Flipping heck they go into minute details about it. Lots of things that I never picked up on at all. I’d forgotten how explicit the programme was. I decided to wait until I was on my own, with the curtains closed. I didn’t want to watch it with my daughter! I did enjoy the series but was taken aback a bit at the ending 😱

aquagran Thu 15-Dec-22 19:31:21

Loved it, didn’t notice the scenery! 😂😂😂

Esmay Fri 16-Dec-22 13:42:06

Haven't seen it , but thank you very much for the recommendation .

Urmstongran Fri 16-Dec-22 14:45:04

Ooh, it’s been brilliant! Quite dark in that last episode and the tension certainly layered up superbly! Tom Hollander is such a brilliant actor isn’t he? I had to pause a couple of times because I couldn’t bear the way situations were going!

Now I have a query but feel I can’t ask it yet (when though?) as others haven’t even started yet and with 13 x 1 hour episodes to go (Series 1&2) it might be weeks before all those who intend to watch it manage to do so!

How about I give it a week then those who are reading this thread can be aware that in a few days I’m going to ask A QUESTION?

I could preface my post with asterisks and ‘spoiler alert’ in capitals.

Do you all think that would be okay?
I could ask my question next Friday.
Unless there’s a better way? A separate thread? DON’T LOOK ETHEL❗️
🤣🤣
Those who don’t want to know my question (it concerns the denouement) could be on the lookout for my name next Friday - and hopefully subsequent replies!

Oreo Fri 16-Dec-22 14:54:07

Hmmm, wonder what this question is?
I thought this series even better than the first.Great acting, great script and great concept.Great opening sequence and great title music. Can you tell I think it’s all great?😄

Janiepops Fri 16-Dec-22 15:05:10

You make me laugh urmstongran!!!
Ask us all now! Just put SPOILER ALERT at beginning then any viewers lagging behind, don’t need to read it !!

GrandmasueUK Fri 16-Dec-22 16:57:47

Ooh can’t wait for the question next week Urms.

TerriBull Fri 08-Dec-23 10:46:27

I've had to search around to find this old thread, felt certain it would have reached the GN community long before I've only just discovered it. So very late to its appreciation society. Step granddaughter recommended this to us a while ago. It's great! I love it, darkly comedic, albeit with a "eeurgh can't believe what I've just seen" scene in episode 6, season 1. I love the locations, theme music, scenery, plot, pretty much everything. 2 episodes into the 2nd series, set in Sicily how beautiful it is, Tom Hollander hasn't appeared yet.

Had to pay for both series as we don't subscribe from whence it came, money well spent! Can't wait for Season 3, it's in production I believe.
