I'm watching - are you?

A Fair Go!

Used to like Miriam, but she now plays on her Foul Mouth and expletives and does it for attention-- so, no, not a fan any more, Oh and don't waste your money on her book!!!

I'm afraid until recently I was a fan of miriam marigolys. That is until my family, 3 grandchildren, my daughter, son in law and a couple of friends with children were seated in a restaurant . The children all were perfectly behaved as they had been taught to be. In walked Miriam Marigolys with a group. The children recognised her from the Harry Potter film and were very excited. She took one look at them and declared to the waiter," I must move tables,I can't stand children " . At that my granddaughter said " but that's Professor Sprout doesn't she like us ? " I promise you, they were all perfectly behaved. How not to win future fans.

I rather like her. Potty mouth doesn’t bother me but her farting, belching and eating raw onions would make sure I kept my distance. I don’t think her manners are great.

I agree with her.

Off to check!

She zoomed up in my estimation when I heard what she'd said about The Crown.

Jane71 Thu 29-Dec-22 19:58:35

I can't stand her, so don't watch her.

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Dec-22 19:54:12

I like her voice, too
I could listen to her voice all evening - her potty-mouth doesn't shock me as long as she doesn't keep referring to her lavatory problems 😀

At least I know that somebody who gets Australian citizenship is actually entitled to call themselves Australian without somebody implicitly thinking, "but where are you really from?"

Or saying "You a bloody Pom?"

The way you answer is key to being accepted out bush.

Well, she speaks posh, but her language and dress are bogan, as she calls it.

I do like her voice if not always what she says! 😁

I like her voice, too. Private education and Cambridge, so her education is quite posh. I think she is very intelligent.

You keep telling me how Australia works.
🤔

Sorry, I forgot you lived in very British Adelaide for a couple of years.

You have to be tough to survive in some areas out bush, no good being too terribly British there.

She's Australian.

Well .... yes. So are lots of British people not born there.
But she's still a Pom

Crikey.

She's been Australian for 10 years. That's how it works down there.

It became very evident to me, having lived there, that a fair go was only possible if you fit the stereotype. I did, luckily

Well, I don't know you, apart from what you've said on here.

But what is a stereotypical Australian? And what constitutes success and achievement?

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 17:37:22

She's Australian.

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Dec-22 17:36:06

I expect Australians are really pleased to have a posh Englishwoman to show them the error of their ways.

Being potty-mouthed might help.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 17:28:43

Maybe that's why I like her. It became very evident to me, having lived there, that a fair go was only possible if you fit the stereotype. I did, luckily.

I don't think her motivation for making the series is that she has just realised. 😕 I think she is trying to make others aware that Oz is only a Lucky Country for some of the people who live there.

She is potty mouthed though 🤣

I've looked it up and the one I've seen was called Almost Australian. So not a repeat.

Australia Unmasked

(Going into this road trip) "I thought the ‘fair go’ meant that everybody would have the same chance of making their lives better; from getting an education and then a job, to finding a home, and making on better in life, and that it didn’t matter who you were or where you were from,” she says.

That perception was quickly shattered

Um - how long has she been visiting, bought land there, lived there and has only just realised?

Makes a good programme, I suppose.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 17:22:14

Yes, some of the history is horrific and I'm glad she covered that part of the history which many may not have been aware of.

That's what the series is about. Getting a fair go.

Unless you were Aboriginal, gay or something else that didn't fit the bill.

Callistemon21 Thu 29-Dec-22 17:18:29

Its wasn't a travelog for Tasmania, I don't think she was trying to show the best of it

I did say earlier that she's not Mary Beard, David Attenborough.
Nor is she Michael Portillo, Simon Reeve nor Nick Crane.

Yes, some of the history is horrific and I'm glad she covered that part of the history which many may not have been aware of.

However, she does nothing much in depth at all, she skims the surface and leaves the viewer unsatisfied.

It's definitely not a repeat. Its wasn't a travelog for Tasmania, I don't think she was trying to show the best of it. I do think she was entitled to get a bit potty mouthed when she met the people who had been denied an education, as well as those whose ancestors had been driven en masse over a cliff to their deaths.

Heigh ho.
