Anyone watching? Very grim, but compelling as always. Last ever series too.

I haven’t watched any of HV as I think it’s too violent for me and I love James Norton usually.

Lin663 Tue 03-Jan-23 14:02:48

No idea why you are all struggling to hear Sarah Lancashire…she sounds clear to me…not a mumble to be detected

polly123 Tue 03-Jan-23 14:19:07

Loved it. Fantastic script and great acting.

At last the return of a decent drama to brighten up the dark nights. I’m a Yorkshire woman so the accent/dialect causes me no problems

Granny14 Tue 03-Jan-23 14:35:16

Haven't watched any of the series but recommended by my DS so looking forward to watching all 3. smile

I have to agree about the sound. Really struggled with it but love the programme

Dollymixtures Tue 03-Jan-23 14:44:32

I’m a northerner (albeit a bit deaf) so I have subtitles on for everything (even Corrie) but Sarah Lancashire just talks my language and I can understand her perfectly although she does speak quickly, I’ll give you that, sunshine!

I would like to recommend people to watch Sarah Lancashire in the recent series on the American cook Julia Childs. Amazing performance. I think about 6 episodes but the first one is available on Youtube (or was?) the rest are on Sky.

I think our hearing has a lot to do with it, because SL is definitely talking in low tones and pretty fast, described by some as mumbling. Her speech is obviously out of range to half the viewers but others can pick up the frequency and maybe they've got good hearing.

Its fab,i love how relatable Sarahs character is off duty,a woman after my own heart.Cant wait for the next episode.
Yes she mumbles but i think that is part of her character, whack on the subtitles like i do lol

P-E teacher one thing Bobbit.

Enjoy the series but, like some others, find it difficult to hear Sarah Lancashire. Hardly opens her mouth when speaking. Perhaps the sound on the production is poor.

Marilla Tue 03-Jan-23 16:00:25

Poor sound quality from the production team. Actors tailing off the last phrase of their script, making it difficult to catch some important words. I found Sara Lancashire’s dialogue too wordy.
I found the storyline a bit disappointing.

Ps Nothing to do with accent, but poor sound seems to be something BBC dramas are guilty of.

Great to have it back on. Sally Wainwright is a great author and I think she has also got the Alan Bennett ability to hear true phrases and sentences that you recognise. Oh do hope she could think of how to do some more of Last Tango In Halifax, loved that too. Cant you tell it is winter now - we finally get some decent drama to enjoy. So good to look forward to a well written and not totally obvious plot. Again it is an ensemble of good actors and I also enjoy watching the sister (who was the stroppy miseryguts ladies maid in downton abbey)

Flo122 Tue 03-Jan-23 18:43:38

Bea65, I thought that too, ie he is planning to scarper with his son. No other reason

Flo122 Tue 03-Jan-23 18:45:51

Absolutely love Happy Valley, although I am a bit nervous about Sara's character coming up for retirement. It usually ends in tears.

Yes, there have been countless complaints to the BBC about poor lighting and sound in the past. Remember Jamaica Inn in 2014? That was an all time low and it wasn't the only one.

I started re-watching the first series a while back and decided to give up. I hadn't been so disturbed on first viewing but I found it so grim the second time that I couldn't face it again.

This last series appears to be heading towards being similarly grim but the various story threads are so gripping, the characters and dialogue so believable that I can't resist watching. (I too have some difficulty hearing all the dialogue).

Yes, it is poor sound, not accents.

The sound is often muffled.

I agree. Sarah is my favourite actor and the series is very true to life. I understand everything she says, however I have trouble understanding my mumbling grandson half the time!

That was my first thought!

I'm hoping she drives off into the sunset in her Land Rover, happy with the way everything has turned out... 🤞

Yes. Jamaica Inn was dreadful. I was glad to discover that it wasn’t only me who couldn’t make out what was being said.

Hear hear

Thoroughly enjoying it and I have no problem with the accent or volume of Sarah's acting
