Anyone watching? Very grim, but compelling as always. Last ever series too.

about the same

Urmston - if only we’d thought on. We could have had a gransnet north west viewing if Happy Valley to date in preparation for this series
It’s sooo good
And so funny amidst the dark

My prediction is Sgt Cahill tells the Eastern European gangsters that Tommy is a grass. They can kill him saving her thr bother so she can drive off to retirement

Please don’t let the people taking Ryan to visit Tommy be her sister and chap

Wowzer! I’m gonna race through this - it’s excellent drama? What was I doing in 2014 to miss this?

Cracking action, believable characters and I’m already tense! The first episode where that poor boss (Nevison) who’s wife has liver cancer & his daughter gets kidnapped by You all Know Who -

I’m on another episode or two tomorrow night that’s for sure.
12 in total to bring me up to date.

I won’t be doing any dusting ... 🤣

After catching up on iPlayer for the last series I was not disappointed at all I had no problem with the speech as Gloryanni says it could be a Northern thing.
Two hours of good drama now on Sunday for a few weeks as Call the Midwife is on just before Happy Valley.

Well I’m a northerner and I had trouble understanding her mumbling. Apart from that I’m really enjoying the programme. Call the midwife as well ? Good viewing for me 😊

We watched the first episode tonight but are going to watch the previous two series before we watch any more. 7 years is a long time.

I’ve recorded it. Does anyone know where I can read what happened in the previous series, I’m can’t remember and think I may well be lost when I watch it 😂

There is a rundown of series 1&2 at the beginning of this series. The clips will refresh your memory. I can't watch something again until it has well and truly faded from my memory and this hasn't.

When the last series was aired we were holidaying with friends in France. We were so hooked on the series we sat in our room and watched it on the iPad. Even though it was on record at home sad or what!

PE Teachers demise - maybe force him into a position stuck in one of the lock gates on the canal that runs along tho bottom of HV.

Then fill the lock, slowly.

I’ve never watched HV but heard good things about it. It is worth me starting with the current series. I’m not a big TV watcher so don’t really fancy starting from the very first series.

Quokka Tue 03-Jan-23 12:22:13

Brilliant writing and acting. Well done those laydees!

Peaseblossom Tue 03-Jan-23 12:32:56

I won’t be watching it until all the episodes are available. Hate having to wait a week for each episode.

I read the criticisms from viewers who couldn't hear/understand what Sarah Lancashire was saying.
As a hearing aid wearer, I put the subtitles on in anticipation of struggling, but to my surprise, I could hear every word she spoke, without even looking at the screen!
Could it be the timbre of a voice? As my hearing is diminished, perhaps it picks up 'lower/higher' (I've no idea which tbh) levels of a voice.
Interestingly, when I was working I couldn't be near 2 colleagues as the pitch/tone of their voices made me feel ill ! Neither of them had a loud voice but both really grated on my ears. Poor ladies obviously thought I didn't like them as I avoided them.

Don't start with Series 3 because the story follows through from the start. Start with Series 1 and forget about the rest. You can always watch them later on if you feel like it.

Delila Tue 03-Jan-23 12:45:03

Bytheway, preferably watch the previous series otherwise I think you’ll find it difficult to make sense of the current one - it will be worth it as the all series have been consistently excellent.

Is your hearing aid connected direct to the TV? My hearing is reasonable (without hearing aid) but I need sub titles for SL's voice unless my hearing aid is plugged straight into the TV.

Louisa Mellor writes on Den of Geek about Happy Valley. Even if you have seen the first two series, this is a good recap on the Kneževićs' involvement in the storylines:

The script (as well as brilliant acting and directing of course) is crucial in HV. How much good quality script writing is there these days though? Very very little. Sensational visuals seem to suffice for the majority and what a huge pity that is.

Ah....me too. I'll be recording them and then it will be one per night for me. I'll have to keep off this thread.

Callistemon21 Tue 03-Jan-23 13:00:34

NorthFace thanks

Even though I watched the previous series, it's been a long time and a recap is always good.

Good point Crystal

A brilliant series!

Like others, I also need subtitles to understand some of what is being said. I don't think it's that Sarah's accent is a Northern thing. She is from Oldham in Lancashire. As a fellow northerner, I still struggle to catch some of what she is saying.

Compulsive viewing!

oodles Tue 03-Jan-23 13:39:40

I'm. It hard of hearing if people mumble or if there is background noise, but I had no problems hearing here tbh
