Just back from the cinema after watching Otto. No I haven't read the book but I highly recommend the film. Great performance by Mr Hanks, wonderful story and if you go take plenty of hankies.

I'm reading his latest book just now. I can only hope that nobody decides to turn that into a sickly film. It's full of flashbacks, thought provoking statements and jokes as well as jeopardy. Frederik Backman is a very clever writer.

It is. I’d seen the Scandi version and thought I’d make a point of sitting down and watching it. I remembered there being a thread about it and wanted to re read what people had said when they saw it at the cinema. Was wary of recommending it as it does have content that could upset some people but, in general most people that have seen it liked it.

Is this the same as the one previewed on the tv this Sunday? .I think it was A Man CalledOtto. It was really enjoyable.

Loved the book, and for once, the film was as good as the book. Have seen the film twice !

We watched it on Channel 4 on Saturday evening and enjoyed it .

I’m going to try to find the time to watch the original so I can compare them.

I loved it but realise it’s an American version of the original (which I also watched and loved)

When I fisr saw the thread I thought, this was on TV last night, then I saw it was an old thread.

I watched it for about 30 minutes- 'till the scene at the railway station which I thought was ridiculous.

I do like Tom Hanks but this film just seemed to have one storyline- and it was a very depressing one. I didn't find it at all funny either- it just seemed to be trying too hard to say the same thing over and over...

'It's a wonderful life' did it so much better...

It was on tv. Ch 4 I think?

I watched this on Netflix.

Wonderful film and so moving.

Tom Hanks never disappoints.

What a surprise to have a decent film on terrestrial television on a Saturday night as well. The adverts of course were an irritation but we enjoyed it,Tom Hanks is just so watchable. I’ve never disliked a single one of his films.

I really enjoyed the film and think it should be considered as a standalone as it isn’t really true to the good book version! Just a feel good film with no Oscars to be won

Lovely film.

It was on tv at the weekend, lovely film, tissue warning at the end😪😪

A truly wonderful film. Very emotional but also has a deeper message and I find myself still thinking about it several days later.. always a sign of a good film. I knew nothing of the story and it came up randomly on the TV. I watched because I love Tom Hanks.. now an older man.

I enjoyed watching on Tv this last weekend as it was too hot to go out.

Tom Hanks was brilliant but couldn’t help but be irritated by his new neighbour. I would be avoiding her.

Same as Aveline - loved the book too much to see the film - Mr Hanks is really not my Ove (Otto in the film version)

Sadgrandma Sun 13-Jul-25 23:18:54

I read the original book ‘ A Man Called Ove’ and persuaded my DH to come to our local vintage cinema to see it. He doesn’t like films much but will go there as you can sit at a table, in a comfortable chair, with a glass of wine. I glanced across at him and, to my amazement, he was crying! Lovely film

It's a lovely heart warming film. Tom Hanks is one of my favourite actors.

The cat was very good, too…

Crossstitchfan Sun 13-Jul-25 22:27:35

I thought it was a lovely film. Not brilliant, but enjoyable and different.
Tom Hanks can do no wrong for me. This may not be his best film but he was great in it.

Aveline

Tom Hanks really disappointed me in this film

I’ve just googled the book which does sound good. I just can’t seem to read these days or I’d buy it. I wonder if I should try the audio book ( when I get round to subscribing to Audible, that is).

3rd time of watching Otto, makes me tearful every time.
