Sounds interesting so I'll have a look for it. I haven't got Alexa though.

People of a certain age might also like The Heritage Chart Where you can vote for a top 20 of heritage artists. People vote from all over the world!
www.heritagechart.co.uk/
You can see the artists performing on the TV show with Mike Read on Talking Pictures every Sunday night at the most ridiculous hour of 2.55am (Monday morning). You can record it or see it on catch up though:

Listening now 9pins and agree with you it's very easy on the ear, thank you for the recommendation.

Thanks 9pins, that’s definitely something to look into and will also try to record the heritage chart. You might like to try the Saturday Club and Sunday Club with John Bennett on BBC Sounds. The Saturday Club is more 70s music while the Sunday one is more 40s and 50s.

Download and subscribe to Apple Music or Spotify or YouTube Music or whatever.
Create your own radio station. Mix the old with the new you like, add something new. Dump what you get sick of.
I’ve had Apple Music for 5 years and haven’t listened to a radio since. Even has podcasts.
For the price of a coffee each week there’s 3million tracks to listen to.
Apple sends suggestions each day based on your current listening.
You can always dabble into the new.
I could never stand those radio announcers and adds anyway.

I can see the appeal of Boom but I would hate to miss out on some of the current good music that is around.

Radio 2 used to be good but it has been 'improved'.

9pins I've listened to Boom since it first started along with my local Radio Merseyside which keeps me up to date with local news & events I like Heart Radio also which is easy to listen to also.

Chestnut Sat 14-Jan-23 09:59:56

Heart 70s and Heart 80s unfortunately keeps playing the same songs over and over, sometimes every day. So does Gold. What annoys me is that there are many old songs they never play, and why can't they play album songs? I really think they need to refresh their playlists.

Smooth radio gets my vote, music to relax to, old tunes and new.

Chestnut Tue 17-Jan-23 15:43:22

At last I've tuned into Boom Radio and it's great!! I love it. Much better than Smooth, Gold, Absolute 80s which all keep playing the same old chart songs on a loop. I've had enough of hearing the same tracks day after day.

It seems (after a short period of listening) that Boom plays different songs to those channels, more upbeat and so far no ghastly power ballads. It's early days yet but 10 out of 10 so far. Even the adverts are less annoying!

I think Gransnet should be advertising Boom Radio so that more people hear about it and more grans get enjoyment from it!

I’ve tried Boom radio, but it’s not for me. I like a mix of eras, including up to date music - it make me feel like I’m stuck in a musical time warp otherwise. Each to their own though, it’s good to have plenty of choice.

Chestnut Tue 17-Jan-23 15:53:43

Obviously classical stations are usually less annoying than pop stations, but even they can play a lot of wild, crazy violin music and screeching operatic stuff, neither of which I like. I love folk music, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Loreena McKennett, Enya, Mike Oldfield, but you never hear anything like that on the radio. Someone needs to start a folk/country radio station.

What's your generation 9pins? I have a deep loathing for anything Vera Lynne...

Am I the only one listening to Kerrang then?

No one has mentioned Magic or Mellow Magic yet! Just posted on the Ken Bruce that Greatest Hits radio is also on TV - Freeview 716.

I'm sure magic radio is indeed magic.

I used to put it on at work, and we would all find ourselves relaxing, without even realising.

Please tell me if you have found a good radio station. I, too, like a mix.

I love stuff by George Ezra, Jess Glynn - that type of thing!

Redhead56 Wed 18-Jan-23 10:16:26

Heart radio for the mix of music and Apple Music. BBC radio Merseyside for local news info and weather.

MawtheMerrier Wed 18-Jan-23 10:34:14

I dislike the idea of any radio station/tv channel/newspaper or whatever for “people of a certain age” !

In the same way I lament the relative absence of younger adults at classical music concerts or opera, as if it is only for “silver surfers”. DH and I went to concerts, opera and ballet from our early adult years and saw nothing strange in that. I enjoy (or don’t, depending) Radios 2, 3 and 4 regardless of my age and have to admit to enjoying the odd foray into “Hey Duggie” on CBeebies!

Chestnut Wed 18-Jan-23 10:49:48

Well I like what I've heard of Boom so far. I only put it on in the kitchen when I'm cooking or washing up and the music is cheerful which is important to me. I don't listen to the radio for lengthy periods so a bit of cheerful music is all I want. Also, none of the tracks are ones I've heard on the other stations! In fact some of them I don't think I've ever heard before. Fabulous to hear something different and unexpected. I think there were even a few songs from the 1950s which you never hear on the radio. I love it because it's different.

I do still think Radio 2 is best for a good mix of eras, I’ve tried lots of others but don’t like adverts so that excludes a lot of stations. What I’m doing at the moment is selecting who I listen to better on Radio2 so I avoid the presenters who annoy me. I really recommend Dermot O’Leary on Saturday mornings, he plays the most tracks where I think I haven’t heard that before but I like it, I must find out more - I keep a pen and paper by me to note down the details, which I never do on other shows. Not sure what I’ll do when Ken goes, I might have to put up with the adverts on his show - but I like Gary Davies, so if it’s him I’ll stay I think.

Here's a tip for checking out songs on the radio. Download Shazam to your phone and when you hear a song then press it. The app will listen to the song and then tell you what it is. Brilliant. People with Alexa etc. won't require it I presume.

MissAdventure Wed 18-Jan-23 12:02:23

I used to enjoy spotify's option to play more of the same type of music, picked for you.

I don't know if they've stopped doing it, or I've messed it all up.

Kate1949 Wed 18-Jan-23 14:49:42

I like Smooth Radio. Not radio but I've just read that Tony Blackburn is launching a new TV music station today called That's 60s. All 60s music. Tony is 80 at the end of this month and looks great.

Chestnut Wed 18-Jan-23 15:56:38

Sorry Kate, they just keep playing the same old songs and it drives me nuts. I am sick of hearing most of them for 50-60 years.
