I do miss him. I used to laugh all the way as I drove to work every day.
I recently found some old 'Janet and John' stories on YouTube. Blimey! How did he get away with it. He'd never be allowed these days. What's happened to us? Have we all become snowflakes or just too woke or is the BBC trying too hard to be inoffensively bland? I know which I prefer.

I’ve been listening to the Janet and John stories on u tube too (thanks for the link). Hilarious.
I think Terry was one of the best.

I love Julian Cleary - definitely awful innuendo but somehow he makes me lol

FannyCornforth Sat 04-Feb-23 13:55:23

Iam64 I recently listened to Julian reading his novel ‘Briefs Encountered’ on Audible.
Highly recommended if you are a fan, and especially so if you are also a fan Noel Coward

My mascara is running my DH wonders why I am almost hysterical 😂 I’ll never hear a church organ again without thinking of Janet and John and dear TW.

On to the next one.

I’ve just listened to the Dog Show and feel quite weak with laughter. 🐶🐶🐶🐶

Oh yes, I listened to that one yesterday 😂

The Off Licence 🍷😂

I loved Terry Wogan's breakfast show and I listened to it every week day morning. Listening to Janet and John sent me into work convulsed with laughter. He's much missed

Aveline Sat 04-Feb-23 15:36:51

The dog show!? Oh dear! 😂😂😂

I remember when George Best was on his TV Show, real car crash television 📺 yet Terry handled it so professionally. He was just superb at his job

Did no-one find the Nicholas Cage interview funny? I thought that was quite something for him to handle such a wild guest! It's one of my favourite ever interviews.

Callistemon21 Sat 04-Feb-23 17:12:47

I'll try to find it, don't think I ever saw it.

Which one of the guests on Wogan just sat there and didn't say anything? Or just monosyllabic answers.

Aveline Sat 04-Feb-23 17:27:36

Nicholas Cage was just an idiot. Terry handled him very well. Grace Jones was the one who wouldn't speak. Both pains in the neck and not worth air time.

Anniebach Sat 04-Feb-23 17:33:10

Anne Bancroft ?

NanKate Sat 04-Feb-23 20:38:08

Thank you Callistemon for your recommendation of the Off Licence. Next time I’m having a sherry I will think of Janet glugging it back from the bottle 🤣.

This thread is a tonic for me with no one making woke remarks. Hurray 👍

I wonder what the ladies of my WI would say. 😳

Oh yes, Grace Jones. I couldn't remember.

Grandmabatty Sat 04-Feb-23 21:53:17

I think it was Grace Jones who slapped Russel Harry when he interviewed her.

Aveline Sat 04-Feb-23 21:56:51

Yes. Could have been. Russell Harty! I'd forgotten him. That's showbusiness!

SueDonim Sat 04-Feb-23 22:34:55

Thank you for the Janet & John link - I hadn’t heard of them! I didn’t listen to Wogan that much, just on the school run, really, so the J&J thing passed me by. Plenty to listen to on YouTube! grin

NC started with a somersault which was very funny I thought, the last thing you'd expect. But then he went on to give a reasonable interview considering (there may have been other factors at play there). All in all I thought it was an entertaining interview and Terry Wogan handled it perfectly.

What I liked about those chat shows of old it that the guests went on to chat about this, that or the other, instead of just plugging the latest book/film/record. I watch none of them at all now unless I know that a favourite of mine is appearing.

Chestnut Sat 11-Feb-23 16:58:24

Yes, there were some very interesting chats and very often no mention by the guest of any book or movie. Parkinson was good with men but very leery with attractive women. He was obviously a boobs man and would get all silly and giggly with people like Rachel Welch and Helen Mirren, it was pathetic. Wogan on the other hand was never fazed by a pair of boobs. He coped with anything, rudeness, cheekiness, whatever they did, he stayed professional. He was wonderful.

Graham Norton is very good at coping with anything, but his show is very shallow and has no substance. It's all about the latest book or movie.

Two people who can give a really good interview are Piers Morgan and Jonathan Ross. I've seen both of them interviewing people at length, but it doesn't happen very often.

Kate1949 Sat 11-Feb-23 17:45:59

I watched a bit of Talking Pictures today about Bette Davies. There was a clip of Terry interviewing her when she was 79. She seemed quite taken with him and told him he was 'very attractive'.

I knew it was a Hollywood star who refused to speak on Wogan, but couldn't remember. I found this:

ANNE BANCROFT: Anne was beyond criticism as an actress but not the easiest of guests. She came into make-up before the show and she was crying with fear because no-one had told her that the show was live and she never did live television. She got herself into a state by the time she came on the show and didn't speak at all. Ben Elton was on too and he sort of saved the day by keeping talking.^
