Sorry if the title is a bit off, but is anyone else disappointed with the plots in the current series of Vera? I love the characters, the actors are great, the setting etc etc but the plots have been rubbish. Is it just me?

Vera cosy? its often quite dark, sad and complex family tragedies.

I don't think "cosy" is an appropriate description for Vera. That term is, I think, more suited to Midsomer Murders or Murder in Paradise.

The acting in Vera is superb and not at all corny - even on the occasions when the plots are a bit silly.

It's a rubbish series altogether. Don't like what they call "cosy crime". Waste of a good actress like Brenda Blethin. Hope it ends for good. Give me gritty crime dramas like "CSI" and "Law and Order". American crime dramas are brilliant.

just seen a very dated episode of alfred hitchcock presents which had a very young brenda blethyn in.

Oh. that bit was so sad and awful.

What a fab trip tho.

I love Vera and the countryside and coastline filmed is beautiful. Last summer I went on a coach tour of Northumberland which visits a lot of the filming locations.I'm sure it was Bethany who was murdered and then replaced by Jackie.

Just watched the last episode..
Has anyone else notice her hat when it's placed on a table?
I saw this the pervious episode and again tonight, episode 4.
One shot shows her hat crown "proud" then flat...then change of angle.. . "Proud" again... Change shot .. flat.. Me thinks the continuty team having fun?
I'm newish to Vera.. Is this a thing on this program?

It's not just the shape of her hat that makes me laugh - a few episodes back everyone else was dressed for a heatwave yet Vera was still in her raincoat and hat. I'm sure she was sweating!

But if you happen to love and enjoy the content of said "same old", then you continue to enjoy.

Actually its not same old because she has changed and developed (mellowed) as time has gone on, we've found out a lot of her back story, and she has become kinder at work (tho still sharp to co-workers at times)

Have to admit I'm fed up with her squeaky wittering voice, old coat and hat. Thought police were paid more and could afford to dress smartly - especially as she hasn't a mortgage!

Dianehillbilly1957 Sat 25-Feb-23 21:03:48

To be honest Vera is two hours of the 'Same old Same old! Pretty boring.

Wyllow3 Sat 25-Feb-23 18:24:44

Wow, Endeavour alert! (unless sometimes has beaten me too it up thread)

" Season 9's opening episode will air at 8pm on Sunday 26th February on ITV1."

Kenver60 Sat 25-Feb-23 18:20:10

The darkest evening made me wonder why the murdered woman ever slept with that horrible chap in the first place ,leave alone get pregnant by him.,Then he supposedly tried to rape her then murdered her and left his baby in the car in a weather warning storm . I was totally confused by the plot . Guess I need to read the book .

They were filming in Corbridge fairly recently, only managed to see her Land Rover and some of the camera crew, but that was quite exciting. {grin}

Yep just you argymargy

Er... clearly not, going by others' responses!

Well I was pleased with the final episode which was a "proper one" based on one of the books. Hopefully there will be more like this.

JaneJudge Sat 25-Feb-23 16:09:29

it said in something i read that it will continue under another guise, so unfortunately we will no longer longer see lovely brenda sad

Saggi Sat 25-Feb-23 16:06:35

Love Vera …Brenda really in her mid 70’s …crikey looks younger than me , and I’m 72. I’m impressed …but a big work load for her!

Susieq62 Sat 25-Feb-23 15:47:16

We like to spot the places in the NE where they film
The last episode was our book group choice and we were all disappointed by the interpretation of the story! In face I turned it off as it was so dreary! I usually enjoy Vera tbh!
Now I do suggest Silent Witness bites the dust after the , in my opinion, awful last series !!!

I love the Vera dramas as I know the area a bit although I don't live there. It's so beautiful particularly all along the coast. I also love the books - perhaps even more than the telly dramas. They're full of detail and are more dense and expansive and of course I know what Vera and her colleagues look like. There's humour in the books too.

I thought the plots were good.

I only realised how long its been on when i remembered my late mum saying she couldnt come over as "Vera's on" (was probably quite new back then?) But my mum passed away 24 yrs ago.

Not possible, as it only started in 2011, just twelve years ago.

Can you be thinking of another series with a female lead?

Madashell Sat 25-Feb-23 13:54:05

Past its sell-by date. Predictable.

Silverlady333 Sat 25-Feb-23 13:46:22

I hate watching her because of her fake Geordie accent! I do however like to see how many places I recognize!

Anniel Sat 25-Feb-23 13:21:21

I love Vera. I watch a lot of Murder programmes, some documentaries some fictional series. In Vera I enjoy her character and how her team slots in around her. Then there is the glorious landscapes of Northumberland and the lilting Geordie accents. We watch English TV on an Amazon Firestick and I bought the ITVX app so I could watch programmes like Vera. I have no criticisms to make, I watched Darkest Evening only yesterday and thought I must go back to Ann Cleeves book on Audible.
