Sorry if the title is a bit off, but is anyone else disappointed with the plots in the current series of Vera? I love the characters, the actors are great, the setting etc etc but the plots have been rubbish. Is it just me?

Crikey it is a dramatic title grin

It seems somewhat out of sync as we watched Jackie die sometime ago but she is now resurrected!

I'm enjoying it.

Debbi58 Wed 22-Feb-23 17:51:50

I agree, plots definitely not as good as they were

I just think the last couple have had the killer turn out to be a bit unbelievable in terms of motive. I think I read the entire Agatha Christie works when I was younger and although you knew it would be the person you least suspected, there was always a genuine motive. Not just "ooh I got a bit cross and I never meant to kill him but oops it happened and of course I tried to cover it up"

Have not caught up with the latest series yet, (Happy Valley etc), but did watch the latest one, The Darkest Evening.

That was a ‘proper Vera ‘ book, so many of them aren’t based on the actual novels, which often means the stories are poor.

My husband watches then (we record stuff) but I’ve always found them a bit dreary. But I suppose the lack of extreme action is part of the appeal for many.

I love them but I’m a Geordie and like to try and spot where they’re filming. I’m not disappointed hope there’s still more.

You're right. I have only recently read the book.

I watch Vera because it's set in my home county and I love trying to guess where she is but I have to admit the plots this series have been weak.

We also wonder how she manages to get the front-facing photos of the people she sticks up on her board. Unless she gets them from DVLA driving licences if they have one?

I don’t think too deeply about it, gentle entertainment that gives me a smile.

I don’t watch Vera - so the title knocked me a bit - the only Vera I know is Vera Duckworth and she’s been gone a while - and Ofcourse Vera Lynn and she’s been gone too 😂

The last Vera of this series was shown a few days ago. Next weekend Endeavour is returning for a new series.

I am unsure if we will see a new series of Vera because she is mid 70's and spends half of the year away from home filming, which is apparently taking its toll.

Still a Vera fan, although the plots are a little thin and the murderer always appears early on and ‘seems’ helpful.
Like other locals, I love the locations and the suggestion that she can get from the Quayside to the coast in minutes. Given her cottage is on Holy Island, one can only wonder how she can commute into Town, bearing in mind the strict timetable of tides to adhere to.

Visgir1 Wed 22-Feb-23 19:11:31

I haven't really watched the series, but have watched the recent one on catch up. I was under the impression this is the last one.
She hanging that grotty mac and hat up for good.

I always just enjoy the programme. I like Brenda Blethyn. I always record it and watch it on Monday pms. Glad to hear Endeavour is coming back.

MrsKen33 Wed 22-Feb-23 19:28:36

I like Vera and Brenda Blethyn, but the plots are not so good as they have now moved away from the original books and therefore the original writer. When this happens something subtle is missing.

AGAA4 Wed 22-Feb-23 19:33:35

Good news that Endeavour is coming back. I hope Thursday is still in it.

Forsythia Wed 22-Feb-23 19:42:37

We like watching Vera but agree that recent episodes are not a patch on earlier series. Some of the couple pairings seem unlikely.

We are glad Endeavour is coming back but, unfortunately, it is the final series. Such a shame.

I adore Vera.

I have loved the plots this series, actually. But they are of a certain kind (me and sis discussed this).

This series, in the end we always find out its a family member or one very close to the family. The plots are more psychological than occupying a wide dramatic stage, but I liked it.
Yes, adore the scenery, it makes me want to go especially to the miles of unpopulated beaches.

I also like the evolution of Vera herself. she can still be brusque, but is kinder and more thoughtful to colleagues.

Oh my, I thought we'd come to the end of Endeavour - is there really another series after that snowy dramatic old manor ending and Endeavour knowing he needed time out?

Galaxy Wed 22-Feb-23 20:58:43

I developed a taste for all these kind of series during lockdown but I just cant get away with endeavour.

The last episode was straight from the book by Ann Cleaves not written for TV but adapted from her book.

For those fans of Brenda Blethyn - have you watched the 1996 Mike Leigh film "Secrets and Lies"?

I think her performance was absolutely outstanding. British cinema at its very best.

Retirement age in the police, unless Superintendent or above, is 60. Poor old Vera must be at least 70 and BB is even older. Give the poor woman a rest 🤣
