Girlie night in

Hi, hoping you can help. I am shortly having a girlie night in with my new 16 year old son’s partner’s daughter while they have a couple’s night out. Bit of a bonding exercise really and we are both looking forward to it. I’m planning nibbles, mocktails, face packs and manicures etc and would welcome suggestions for a suitable chick flick that we could watch together. I’m maybe a bit old fashioned in my ideas of what she might enjoy. Having only ever had sons and grandsons I’m not sure on girls’ stuff. Hope you can help, thanks in advance.

There's a really touching, sweet movie called About Time, with Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy. Involves time travel of a sort, with multiple love stories/relationships involving all generations of one rather quirky family. Strong themes of kindness and ultimate generosity. Funny, deeply moving. Would appeal to viewers of different ages.

Chardy

My son, once he was mobile (and a similar age), used to travel 20 miles to have lunch with his gran.

This touched me Chardy and brought a tear to my eye.

How lovely she asked to spend time with you Pigma have a fun time.

I have a 16 year old granddaughter whom I adore. We live about three hours drive from each other and so we only see each other for about 10 days a year but we keep in contact by Whatsapp. I know that she would love the series Emily in Paris. She has recently started to wear a little bit of make-up. I joined Beauty Pie where you get top quality high end cosmetics for a fraction of their normal price if you join as a subscriber 54.00 per year. It means that I can treat my daughter and my granddaughter to lovely skin- care and cosmetics and if I buy myself things that I decide aren't really me then we have great fun when I pass them on to them. Likewise there are sometimes monthly free gifts if you spend a certain amount. I am happy to pass these onto them. Now that natural lip-colours are in fashion I have bought lip oils with very gentle colours in them that make lips look natural but better with a lovely sheen. My granddaughter loves them and she feels more confident wearing them without looking overdone. My daughter and I love them too. It is so lovely to celebrate a much loved 16 year old becoming a woman, to enjoy the funny sense of humour developing, the joy of spending precious time together.

Yes, sorry, that was a very clumsy way of putting it! The young lady concerned is the daughter of my son’s partner. They have just moved into my son’s house in which we have an annexe. My son has three boys so they have moved into quite a male environment in a new, to them, area so they don’t know many people here. The young lady is very close to her own grandma and now very sweetly wants to spend time with me too but we are still very ‘new’ to all this so hopefully our girls’ night in will be a nice way to spend time together and help break the ice. I appreciate all your suggestions and thank you for taking the time to respond.

Some good advice on here, and all that I would add, from my own experience with my two teenage Granddaughters is that shared laughter makes lasting memories, so perhaps keep that in mind when you're choosing something to watch. Enjoy.

Haha! Most definitely! She can ‘play’ with my make up bag to her heart’s content and I will be a very willing guinea pig, hope she can teach this old dog a few new tricks! I LOVE Dirty Dancing - I’ll have to watch it again even if it’s not her choice!

Callistemon21 Thu 25-May-23 18:00:35

Yes, you can be a guinea pig 🙂

Wyllow3 Thu 25-May-23 17:56:33

Oh well, if she wants to do it at college, all you have to do is be a willing victim ahem...model.....grin

Callistemon21 Thu 25-May-23 17:48:03

Dirty Dancing

👍

Pigma Thu 25-May-23 17:39:52

Fantastic suggestions, thank you so much. We will have a chat and decide in advance what we fancy. I agree son’s partner’s daughter is very clunky, in real life just call her by her name! Great suggestions of a make up session (she wants to do hair and beauty at college) and popcorn, so thanks for that. Her mum tells me she is very excited about the evening!!!

Joseann Thu 25-May-23 17:00:43

Legally Blonde
Dirty Dancing
Hairspray
Juno
Sleepover
Bridesmaids

These are all fairly inoffensive and fun. 🧀y
Oh yes, and anything with dogs if she likes them!

Callistemon21 Thu 25-May-23 16:12:11

Pigma

Thanks everyone. I’ll see what she fancies on the night but will have some of your suggestions up my sleeve in case she can’t decide!

I'm trying to think, my DGD are a bit younger and anything they might like I don't.

I suffered some of Mamma Mia when looking after one DGD who was poorly and thankfully Mum came home halfway through!
Last Christmas (although it's not Christmas) is cheesy but ok
Clueless
Stranger Things (that's Netflix)
If she likes dogs then:
Rescued by Ruby
Dog Gone

BlueBelle Thu 25-May-23 16:03:00

Oh let her choose what she wants to do she might want a face mask beauty pamper evening or if its to watch something make sure you get the popcorn in
Your original post did muddle me it sounded like you had a 16 year old son I am shortly having a girlie night in with my new 16 year old son’s partner’s daughter 😃

Difficult as we don't know how similar or not you are but it does sound like fun night. Maybe something like Hairspray or similar. Something to have a giggle at or a bit of a sing song to. May be 13 going on 30. Dont know any more recent ones. This is the start of your relationship with her and I think its a lovely way to chill and get to know each other better. Time goes so fast that she will be on her own pathway in life and if you get this right now you will always be a part of that . Good luck and enjoy yourselves.

4allweknow Thu 25-May-23 15:54:37

Let the girl trawl through the listings. If you have seen something she stops at just comment whether you enjoyed it, she may like your input for a guide. Enjoy your pamper session!

Gundy Thu 25-May-23 15:26:00

MountainAsh - Bridesmsids is a great suggestion!! It’s hilarious. And for 16 yr olds not too kiddy and enough edgy, grownup… they’ll get it. (Teens these days already know stuff. We came from a more sheltered age) Plenty of laughs 😂
Go for it!

knspol Thu 25-May-23 15:23:09

Best to let her choose the film I think, let her know you have no idea what young women like to watch these days but you're more than happy to go along with any choice of hers - maybe even add something to the effect that you're quite broad minded where such things are concerned.

Wyllow3 Thu 25-May-23 15:13:11

(If she's into girl power then its hard to beat Blondie as a choice in oldie songs for example, Heart of glass"

sure there are many others- early female rock singers) but its a real hoot looking say at the Beverley sisters, ""It's Illegal, It's Immoral Or It Makes You Fat"

Bridesmaids is a popular girly film. I never tire of watching it.
A great comedy. IMHO
