Am I being a bit slow but why is Phillip Schofield being thrown under the bus now? He came out about his sexuality , now revelations about an affair with consensual teenager that he covered up to protect identity , Maybe I'm being naïve but not sure why there has been such a big disconnect from TV at this point .

I thought HW's little speech was toe curling. Asking the viewers if they're alright!!! Why wouldn't they be?

I think that the powers at ITV Towers thought it absolved This Morning, ITV and HW’s skin

I’ve just remembered - it’s The Common’s Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Meeting today

Do you know what time, Fanny? I would like to see it (although the more specific one will be more interesting) but my daughter is visiting today, so I don't think I'll get the chance.

FannyCornforth Tue 06-Jun-23 11:06:48

Doodledog it started around 10.15
I don’t know if it’s available / possible to ‘catch up’

Read an article about HW's 'toe-curling' speech. I loved the description of it as showing her to be 'Hollier than thou".

Whatever is or was happening regarding Schofield and This Morning I do think that the publicity is disproportionate and is being used to cover up other issues. The government must be relishing the way that they’re out of the headlines. If it wasn’t for Schofield and the boat people the electorate might be scrutinising the track record of the government.

In the mid 80's the wife of our local vicar had an affair with a young woman (20+ age gap) who had been their babysitter. She left her children and husband so they could live together. Lots of prurient gossip, much speculation as to blame etc, lots of sympathy for the abandoned family and an awful lot of hate aimed at the young woman, who in many people's opinion had lured the wife away. How times change! Thank goodness there was no social media to spread rumour and hate and the local press didn't get wind of the story. I knew the vicar's wife quite well, she was a kind caring woman who had not come to terms with her sexuality and until she met someone with whom she had a very strong mutual attraction, she thought her life was OK. I moved away and don't know what happened except that her relationship didn't last but neither did she go back to her husband. I hope she's happy and has a contented life and until I am told that PS has committed some terrible crime, I wish the same for him and his family.

Haha! Love that! grin

That vicars wife is just one of many who hid their sexuality from those around them, and tried to hide it from themselves by doing what was expected, getting married and having a family foxie sad.

I wish those things for PS unless he has committed a crime, and his family too as well as the young man involved.

I think it’s next week. It is the one where TM is the focus of the meeting rather than ITV.

Indeed and it was very common in the past and even now for young people, it can be difficult. For people in the public eye, it must have been much more difficult.

As did many vicars.

My grand-mother lived with my mum for several years and could not walk that well, so a friend of my mothers got the local priest to call in to see my grand-mother once a fortnight.
My mother was at work and I was home as I had a six month old baby so I had to be there to let him in the house.
My God he was new to the parish and still in training he was young and absolutely handsome as you could find.
I would make tea for my grand-mother and the young priest and go into the other room with my little one.

I would have to go to confession for having thoughts that one shouldn't have especially for a priest.
I could imagine the headlines young mother seduces young priest (of course I would never have done that)
One thing I have never felt is being drawn to someone the same gender as myself. It does happen to many though live and let live I say.

A messy bob is on trend at the moment

Maybe Holly Willoughby should try a messy bob instead of the current mess.

I have to disagree with you Blossoming in my opinion HW always looks fabulous

That's irrelevant, I know but HW is an attractive woman and I think her hair is great.

Back to the point in question.

And?

Gays have only been allowed in the armed forces since Jan 2000

But that’s something to celebrate isn’t it. It means they don’t have to hide their sexuality, live in fear of being found out or just not join the armed forces.

We can sit here and say how wrong it was before, but that won’t change anything.
I’m more concerned about the potential for bullying that still exists despite being allowed.

FannyCornforth Tue 06-Jun-23 17:30:22

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I find the word ‘gays’ used as a noun really distasteful

Iam64 Tue 06-Jun-23 17:36:49

So do I fanny.

Yes, it’s grim.
I’m a white
I’m a fat
I’m a straight
I’m an old

Not good

Same here.

Maybe it's just quicker? Language usage changed usually are.

I’m sure you didn’t mean to use Gays in any way other than positively Annie. It just rang bells when I heard eg USA military, dismissing the gays who fought as hard as everyone else in their wars
