Am I being a bit slow but why is Phillip Schofield being thrown under the bus now? He came out about his sexuality , now revelations about an affair with consensual teenager that he covered up to protect identity , Maybe I'm being naïve but not sure why there has been such a big disconnect from TV at this point .

Thank you Iam , I chose gay over homosexual, it’s friendlier and I like the word.

Doodledog Tue 06-Jun-23 22:43:42

The word 'gay' itself is fine, but it's usually better to add 'people', so that nobody is being defined by one aspect of their lives. So 'gay people' or 'people of colour' etc.

I havent read all of the thread so apologise if anyone's asked:

Did anyone see Martin Frizzell leaving his home yesterday? Rude and arrogant came to mind when questioned by a reporter.
An ITV boss was quizzed about his dismissive remarks about aubergines at the Select Committee meeting today.

I would have just thought it was a bizarre remark had I not been enlightened on GN about aubergine emoticons.

maddyone Tue 06-Jun-23 23:08:57

I’m sure you didn’t mean to use Gays in any way other than positively Annie.

I’m sure too. My son is gay and I don’t take any offence from Annie’s words. I know it wasn’t meant unkindly at all. Being gay isn’t a big deal, they’re people just the same as the rest of us.

Callistemon21 Tue 06-Jun-23 23:16:16

Gay people did join the Armed Forces, thousands over many years, they just kept their sexuality to themselves
If found out, they had their service medals and pensions taken away or even court-martialled and imprisoned.
Unbelievably this happened up until the 1990s.

maddyone Tue 06-Jun-23 23:22:18

Terrible wasn’t it? Whilst some people are very clearly gay, others like my son are not, and so many would have been able to join the forces, play professional football, become vicars or priests, and so on. But if they were discovered, their livelihoods were often lost. So sad.

Frizzell's comment was very strange in the circumstances, wasn't it?

He can't be unaware of the connotations, so what on earth was he on about?

Please accept my sincere apologies Annie thanks

I was in a foul mood yesterday.
I really must not post when I’m feeling as such

FannyCornforth Wed 07-Jun-23 08:10:41

Doodledog and Callistemon, what did Martin Frizzell say?

Doodledog Wed 07-Jun-23 09:45:52

HE was asked about if there was a toxic environment at ITV and replied to the female reporter that (I paraphrase) 'I know what I think is toxic. Aubergines. Do you thing aubergines are toxic?'

Something like that, anyway. The film of it will be online.

maddyone Wed 07-Jun-23 10:03:32

I’m another who didn’t know what was meant by an aubergines until yesterday. I must have led a very sheltered life grin
Anyway I’ve no idea what Martin Frizzell meant. I’ve seen a clip of it and your précis is about right Doodledog.
How weird.

I didn't know either until about a month ago when I used it on here and another poster enlightened me.
I'm fed up of everyday words being taken over and used as innuendo.
I ate one yesterday 🍆
Well, part of one. So there!

I think we have to explore really difficult topics. When is having a relationship with a young person who you knew at 15 ok? We should as a society be able to talk about those issues.
Is what woody allan did ok? Should we not talk about that.
I am not comparing the two I just think if we dont talk about moral issues relating to power and young people we let them down.

I agree with you.

I really, really agree with this. When does an especially good relationship with a teacher or social worker or therapist- needful for the 15 year old - cross the boundary?

Its not enough to say, "touch" because although that is a no go boundary, emotional boundaries can be just as significant.

Having just come from a safeguarding meeting, in an organisation I volunteer for, which is national but nowhere near as high profile as ITV, it strikes me that ITV has been[not necessarily], derelict in it's safeguarding duties of the young man.

If all they did[and who am I to know for sure], was ask the young man and PS if anything went on, that does not seem robust enough a procedure. In my opinion.

I cant remember though, whether by the time the young man worked for ITV, what age he was by that time.

Sorry if this aspect has been discussed already earlier in the thread.

ITV Duty of Care Charter may not be robust enough.

Well, part of one. So there!

I learnt about the alternative meaning of 🍆 on GN as well. Until then I thought it was part of oven roasted Mediterranean vegetables.

foxie48 Wed 07-Jun-23 11:48:24

Wow the world of emojis is a foreign land to me!

Smileless2012 Wed 07-Jun-23 11:52:46

Me too Molly. Being on GN has certainly broadened my horizons and made me blush from time to time.

Serendipity22 Wed 07-Jun-23 17:52:53

I have just jumped into this thread and what jumped out was the aubergine bit, which is my FAVOURITE colour, ( boring bit of info ) but besides that all i know is its chopped up, drenched in olive oil and thrown in the oven.... end of.

Im obviously missing something here! Will someone be so kind to enlighten me !

I saw Martin Frizel getting in a taxi going on about aubergines and asking the reporter "do you like aubergines? " and i thought What the heck he on about!

🤔

Doodledog Wed 07-Jun-23 18:11:56

The 🍆 emoji is used to represent a penis, (if you send that sort of text grin).

maddyone Wed 07-Jun-23 18:22:53

But Doodledog, none of us on Gransnet do that because we’re laideees.

Serendipity22 Wed 07-Jun-23 18:37:46

Ahhhhhh right..
So its all based on the emoji of the aubergine and not Mr F's actual words ?

Serendipity22 Wed 07-Jun-23 18:38:52

As my mum would say "Smut."

Haaaaaaaa

Iam64 Wed 07-Jun-23 19:02:17

Doodledog - I googled just before reading your post at 18.1i never thought of myself as a ladieee and still don’t. I must be living a sheltered life

I think there’s a bit of exaggeration going on if they’re using an aubergine.
