Who else is watching this? It is, as Chris so often states, a reason in itself for the BBC Licence fee!!!

I really enjoy watching this, love all the nests and virtually everything else (although do not watch anything involving spiders!!!).

Even the predation, sad though it may seem to us, is the normal part and cycle of life. Do think the film of the cuckoo fledgling is amazing. How can those tiny birds not realise that great big thing in their nest is an intruder???

I was scrubbing my decking yesterday when a very curious fledgling Robin joined me. It stalked me for quite a while then landed at my feet and tried to drink from a small pool of water on the deck. It obviously didn't taste nice as it shook its head in disgust.
I got the hint and put a shallow tray of fresh water on the deck for it to enjoy.
The thing is I had spent over an hour scrubbing the decking and cursing the birds that had encrusted it in poop.
Must be bonkers...

smile Wonderful post. Made me laugh. Glad you gave that baby robin a proper drink though.

I’m the same florentina - I enjoy keeping the birds happy but one Robin has become so comfortable with us that it follows us into the house. Our fault for offering mealworms. His brood have been well fed. Yesterday I sat in the garden watching fledgling wrens being fed. They call constantly so aren’t as secretive as I imagined them to be. One of the babies hopped round the edge of a flowerpot just a few feet from me - I hope they become more cautious.
