Hello 👋 I was chatting with someone who had had the great pleasure of seeing David Suchet and Michael Sheen in one of my favourite plays, Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.
Which got me thinking that I really didn’t like Tom Hulce as Mozart in the film, to the extent that it rather spoiled the film for me.
Do you have any examples of what you think is poor casting?
Others which spring to mind are Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings, and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York
Oh, Mark Rylance is absolutely phenomenal. I’ve recently watched him in The Phantom of The Open and The Outfit. You couldn’t imagine two more different films or parts. He’s a genius
Anton Lesser was great in Wolf Hall. Well, in my opinion the whole cast was great in Wolf Hall, particularly the wonderful Mark Ryland. I was thrilled to find WH available on iPlayer and watched it for the 3rd time. Might even give it a 4th outing once the tennis is over this afternoon.
Bella and Sparklefizz I agree with you both. She’s not exactly chameleon like. I’m not really a fan.
Clawdy, to my shame I have never seen Dr Z. That is indeed an odd bit a casting. I love Rita (a 60s icon) but she’s always Jo in A Taste of Honey to me
Likewise in the Shetland books, Jimmy Perez is described in every book as being descended from a Spaniard washed up in the islands from the Armada - black curly hair, olive skin, brown eyes - and so asking me to accept Douglas Henshall (fair hair, blue eyes) in the part is impossible...!
Agree. I'm not one of the Douglas Henshall fan club. Maybe Aiden from Poldark instead?
In Bonfire of the Vanities book the woman was a tall, blonde Jerry Hall type character and the main man was a tall sophisticated man...when the film came out and was played by Melanie Griffiths and Tom Hanks it really ruined it for me!
Roger Allam in Murder in Provence, as an urbane French mayor, I found him quite unbelievable as he sounded just like he always does in Endeavour etc etc
With my husband Roger Allam (he and his wife are oblivious to this fact) it’s all about the voice, he’d be a fool to change it.
I can understand your point though, as it is so distinctive.
Roger is also an excellent singer; he originated the role of Javert in Les Mis, and the role still belongs to him ♥️

To my slight surprise, I've liked all the Maigrets, but apparently Rupert Davis 'was' Maigret according to Simenon. One of the worst is Trevor Howard in Von Ryan's Express. Far too old and totally unbelievable.
I thought that Alison Steadman was great as Mrs Bennett - exactly as she is portrayed in the book (& based on JA's own mother..!) I can't watch Brenda B as Vera - not because of her age, but because in the books much is made of Vera's size -she's very obese - and the petite Ms Blethyn is nothing like her.
