Hello 👋
I was chatting with someone who had had the great pleasure of seeing David Suchet and Michael Sheen in one of my favourite plays, Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.

Which got me thinking that I really didn’t like Tom Hulce as Mozart in the film, to the extent that it rather spoiled the film for me.

Do you have any examples of what you think is poor casting?

Others which spring to mind are Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings, and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York

Mark Warren (who I do like) as Van Der Valk

Tom Cruise as the famously - very- tall Jack Reacher .

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet. I like her, she just wasn’t right for the part.

I know...(and we are talking SERIOUS disagreements in the family here grin)

but I liked the way Tom Cruise portrayed the character so much in the films despite reading every single book....

Stephen Tompkinson as DCI Alan Banks.

Alison Steadman as Mrs. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.
She was dreadful.

That's interesting because I love that film.

I agree about Stephen Tomkinson and Alison Steadman in those roles.

Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With The Wind.

Scarlett O’ Hara would never have preferred him to Clark Gable as Rhett Butler- no way.

She was dreadful.

Spot on.
She was so over the top.
And I’m ordinarily a fan.
The director should have had a word

On the other hand Barbara Leigh-Hunt as Lady Catherine DeBurgh was masterly casting, she was truly intimidating!

Tara Fitzgerald in I Capture the Castle - truly miscast! Topaz was supposed to be eccentric, a bit ‘on another planet’.

Kate1949 Thu 06-Jul-23 15:29:40

I agree re Alison Steadman as Mrs Bennet. Awful. Usually she is great.

Opal Thu 06-Jul-23 16:15:57

I disagree, I thought Alison Steadman was brilliant as Mrs Bennet!
I thought Matthew McFadyen was awful as D'Arcy in the film, very wooden. I don't particularly like him anyway, but he did nothing for the character or the film. There was absolutely no chemistry between him and Keira Knightley.

Calendargirl Thu 06-Jul-23 16:26:35

Meryl Streep in ‘The Bridges Of Madison County’.

In the book, Francesca came across as attractive.

Meryl made her frumpy and somehow trying to be coquettish and girly with Clint.

Actually, Clint Eastwood was miscast as well. Too old for the part.

But seeing as it was Clint’s company making the film, and I imagine Clint was the director……

Who would be arguing with him?

I think Alison Steadman was an excellent Mrs Bennett. All the silliness was a good reflection of how she was described in JA's book.

Didn't bother watching the film version with Keira Knightley. She was far too thin. Those girls had absolutely nothing to do but eat, read and go to parties. All the hard work was done by servants.

Nandalot Thu 06-Jul-23 16:40:25

I know others will disagree with me, but Brenda Blethyn as Vera. She is far too old.

I think she was about 35, whilst Topaz was a teenager, so she couldn’t enthuse properly - sadly it’s something we lose as we lose our innocence. It’s my favourite book, the film didn’t do it justice.

I loved Alison Steadman as Mrs B, and I don’t think she was OTT. Judging by some of her speeches -in the book but not the BeeB version - I think she nailed her very well. The speech I really wish they’d included is the very long one she makes right after Lizzie has told her she’s going to marry Mr Darcy, that begins,

‘Good gracious! Lord bless me! only think! dear me! Mr Darcy! Who would have thought it? And is it really true?

and ends after a great deal similar,

‘Three daughters married! Ten thousand a year! What will become of me. I shall go distracted.’
😂
A comedy classic, IMO. I could just see Alison S doing that to a T.

Clive Owen and Keira Knightley in King Arthur.

The rest of the casting was spot on (specially Ray Winstone as Bors), but neither of them has charisma at the best of times, and there was just no chemistry between them at all. It was very disappointing, as overall it was a really good film.

No totally agree. Far too old for the part.

The last play I saw at the theatre. It was so dreadful that it has been erased from my memory - just the knowledge of how awful it was.

BlueBelle Thu 06-Jul-23 18:19:03

Timothy Spall in Mr Turner awful

eazybee Thu 06-Jul-23 18:19:34

No.
Mrs Bennet had a vulgar mind; she was not a vulgar person.
The best Mrs. Bennet I saw was Joan Hickson, faint but complaining.
I thought Olivia de Havilland was wrong in the part of Melly in Gone with the Wind. Playing someone totally good and true but not naive is very hard and she was too sophisticated.

Musicgirl Thu 06-Jul-23 18:27:05

Florence Pugh as Amy in Little Women. Amy is supposed to be an immature, rather silly girl, who would almost certainly have a high, giggly voice. Florence Pugh's rather gravelly smoker's voice and worldly wise manner was totally wrong for the character.
