Absolutely Terrible Casting 🍿😩

Hello 👋
I was chatting with someone who had had the great pleasure of seeing David Suchet and Michael Sheen in one of my favourite plays, Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.

Which got me thinking that I really didn’t like Tom Hulce as Mozart in the film, to the extent that it rather spoiled the film for me.

Do you have any examples of what you think is poor casting?

Others which spring to mind are Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings, and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York

Whenever I mention this I get howled down but I simply couldn't watch Titanic because of the two leads...not because we all know the ending lol!

Initially I thought Kate Winslet must have been Leonardo de Caprio's sister rather than his love interest. She seemed way too old in comparison to his baby face looks.

I also prefer Matthew Macfadayen as Mr Darcy over Colin Firth, I thought he brought a nuance to the role and showed his vulnerability, something which Mr Darcy imbued. I never read him as a snob, rather he was a nervous man unsure of people's motives.

Interesting thread.

By ‘bullseye’, I think it just landed in the tree trunk!

Calendargirl Sat 08-Jul-23 06:47:31

Robin Hood will always be Richard Greene, in the television version, back in the 50’s.

That arrow zinging through the air, at the start, landing in the bullseye, and ‘The Adventures Of Robin Hood’ circling up on the screen. Bliss!

And if memory serves me right, a rather dapper Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Alan Wheatley, with a stylish little beard.

Not the pantomime villain as portrayed memorably by the lovely Alan Rickman, but a baddie nonetheless, who always got his comeuppance at the end.

Remember Kevin Costner as the Sheriff of Nottnam.

If you're talking about Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Costner was Robin. The late great Alan Rickman was perfectly cast (IMO) as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Going along the Roman Wall in trying to get to Nottingham.
Patrick Bergman was far better asRobin Hood wth the film was made at almost the same time with Urma Therman as Maid Marion. Alan Rickman, I would agree with perfectly cast.

I was surprised to find I liked Rowan Atkinson as Maigret, but I did.
Didn't like Alison Steadman as Mrs Bennett or Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, but I liked Derek Jacobi as Cadfael.

Doodledog Fri 07-Jul-23 22:41:23

Oh yes. It was a good film, but it was a stretch to believe the 'pale and interesting' Cate as the flame-haired Elizabeth.

PoppyFlower Fri 07-Jul-23 22:37:24

Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth I.

PoppyFlower Fri 07-Jul-23 22:36:43

Richard Gere in Second Exotic Marigold Hotel. Boring and spoilt the whole film! The first film was Fab.

I thought Emma was wonderful as Eleanor and always cry along with her at the end. Not quite as noisily (well sometimes then)

Romola Fri 07-Jul-23 21:09:25

Emma Thompson of course too old to be Eleanor in Sense and Sensibility. And her mother Phyllida Law much too old.
In the story the mother is too susceptible to the charms of Willoughby, and too indulgent to Marianne. That's what drives the story.

Somehow Tom Cruise just didn't measure up to Jack Reacher!

Typically he is quite good in his role - Maverick 1&2 he's perfection. All Mission Impossible versions, TC has done well.

Ray Winstone as Henry 8th. Awful casting. He looked the part & that's all!

Oh, I quite enjoyed that version. RW always plays RW, I agree; but it's not a great stretch to see Henry as a macho thug.

I didn’t think Nicholas Cage should have been Captain Correlli.

Feather Fri 07-Jul-23 19:42:36

Everyone involved with the TV series of Thorn Birds. Rachel Ward snd Richard Chamberlain bring worst.

Good call, pce612. John Hannah is a good actor, but not at all right for Rebus. Ken Stott was exactly right.

pce612 Fri 07-Jul-23 18:20:56

John Hannah as Rebus. Awful miscasting. Far too young.
Ken Stott was perfect.

John Wayne as a Roman centurion in some Biblical epic,
"Truly this mayun was th SunnaGard" Aaargh!

WHEN I THINK OF JACK REACHER I THINK OF STEVEN SAGAL WHO IS MUCH BETTER SUITED TO THE ROLE,THE BEST PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE SP WAS COLIN FIRTH AND JENNIFER EHELE.

Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet. I like her, she just wasn’t right for the part.

That's interesting because I love that film.

Knightly was the best Elizabeth Bennet for years. She had the youth and vitality and intelligence. I thought Jennifer Ehle was miscast; too staid.

I didn’t like her because she didn’t seem authentic to me, the role was out of her comfort zone so she always looked like she was consciously acting. I liked her in Love Actually though, she’s better playing a modern woman. Actually, I didn’t like the film much at all, much of the casting was poor and it didn’t capture the wit enough. Matthew McFadyen wasn’t right to my mind either, not a patch on Colin Firth.
It’s all personal taste though, because we have a picture in our minds eye, and if somebody doesn’t fit the picture it’s a no.

jerseygirl Fri 07-Jul-23 16:11:59

Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in The davinci code. Totally miscast. If you've read the books you will know what i mean. Mind you the film was rubbish too.

She777 Fri 07-Jul-23 16:07:26

I’ve just seen Strictly Ballroom at the theatre, it’s one of my favourite films. Kevin Clifton played the lead role and I was so disappointed, lots of the cast were a bit lacklustre for me and so many terrible Australian accents.
However the chap that played Fran’s dad and did the Paso Doble was exceptional.
