Absolutely Terrible Casting šŸæšŸ˜©

Hello šŸ‘‹
I was chatting with someone who had had the great pleasure of seeing David Suchet and Michael Sheen in one of my favourite plays, Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.

Which got me thinking that I really didn’t like Tom Hulce as Mozart in the film, to the extent that it rather spoiled the film for me.

Do you have any examples of what you think is poor casting?

Others which spring to mind are Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings, and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York

Emma Watson in Little Women-she stood out like a sore thumb with her English accent. How did she get the role of American Meg?

Oops sorry, RCB is described as tall, muscular, blonde and extremely attractive.

I have nothing against David Tennant, but he cannot be described as any of the above.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 30-Jun-25 17:59:29

David Tennant as Rupert Campbell Black in Disney + Rivals

I also ā€˜resurrect’ threads if still relevant.

Why start another one, lots of answers still good to look back on.

MayBee70 Mon 30-Jun-25 17:34:39

I was the one that resurrected the thread because I sometimes do a search instead of starting a new thread, because things in old threads are still relevant. As far as I know the OP just decided not to post any more otherwise I wouldn’t have done so.

Thank you for the advice. (I have just joined). Presumed because the post about miscasting was there on the forum, it could still be posted on. I will be wary of posting about anything not recent now.

It was a long time ago, but Elizabeth Taylor could not have been more unlike the 'National' Velvet Brown of the book.

And The Pie was a chestnut in the film, not a piebald…

John Simm as Roy Grace, totally miscast.

I agree about Stephen Tompkinson as well EllieAnn

Timothy Spall grunted his way through Turner. So off putting and a disservice to a great artist.

Kiera Knightley played one of my all time favourite novelists, Colette. Colette was small and roundish and Kiera?

Ilovecheese

Mark Warren (who I do like) as Van Der Valk

Agreed re the delectable Marc Warren and , bafflingly, the even more delectable Adam Palsson as Young Wallander.I can't remember why I thought he didn't convince in that role when he has been excellent in others(e.g. "Before We Die")
AND Tom Cruise as Reacher.

Timothy Spall in Mr Turner awful

I normally like Timothy Spall but you’re right, BlueBelle, he was dire as Mr Turner.

I think Vera was well cast and agree about John Hannah and Ken Scott in rebus.
Stephen Tomlinson didn’t fit with the description of Alan Banks but I got used to him.
I can’t watch Agatha Raisin with Ashley Jensen as she is just so wrong for the part.

Mollygo Fri 27-Jun-25 18:17:52

I didn’t rate Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy-and he didn’t think it was the best part for him.
I really liked the first one I saw with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier and I’ve enjoyed every version since.

On the other hand I thought Rowan Atkinson was surprisingly good as Maigret.

Florence Pugh as Amy in Little Women. Amy is supposed to be an immature, rather silly girl, who would almost certainly have a high, giggly voice. Florence Pugh's rather gravelly smoker's voice and worldly wise manner was totally wrong for the character.

Agree whole heartedly.

BlueBelle Fri 27-Jun-25 18:07:13

Timothy Spall in Mr Turner thought it was one of the worst films I ever saw

Yes, FannyCornforth, agree Andie MacDowell miscast in Four Weddings. She was completely outshone by the stunning Kristin Scott Thomas, & like me, friends thought KST would end up with Hugh Grant! Oddly, that wonderful early shot of KST looking amazing whilst wearing a huge straw hat has now been cut from the version they show on TV.

I don’t know if Fanny is still reading, but, she posted this in July 2023
Plus the fact that she might not be with us which could be upsetting for some members who have known her for a long time.

When I first read The Thorn Birds I was thinking of Richard Chamberlain playing the part, if it was made into a film, however, I never imagined Rachel Ward as Meggie Cleary.

Absolutely agree. Can’t think of a more miscasting example. The whole film lacked the sparkle of youth and personalities of the March family. Also the changes the film made to the book where Jo’s book was published by the local rag instead of the publisher friend of Professor Bhaer. I have never forgiven the screenwriter for ruining my beloved Little Women.

I bought the dvd ages ago but still haven’t watched it. I quite often do that and find the film is being shown on tv and I still haven’t got round to watching it. I noticed that Florence Pugh ( who I hadn’t heard of) is also in Midsommar. Another film that I bought on dvd but have been scared to watch in case it’s one of those films that might pop into my mind if I’m outside in the dark or if there’s a power cut! This happened with the Charlton Heston film of The Omega Man. I was scared to go into the garden for years after watching that. Have never watched Blair Witch Project for the same reason ( although curious to know what happens in it). Still haven’t got over The Exorcist shock…

I always found that quite puzzling as she was all over GN at one time šŸ¤”

I suppose people come and go.

This thread is nearly two years old. (Incidentally, I haven’t seen any posts from Fanny for quite a while.)

I dragged it back up again because I put a search in for Pride and Prejudice and wanted to re read what people had said about it in the past. Sometimes it isn’t worth starting a new thread if there’s an old one that is still relevant. I don’t do that with eg personal issues in which people have probably moved on but if it’s something like a book, film or tv series review I’ll reactivate an old one.

John Wayne as a Roman soldier in one of the ā€˜Jesus’ films. Excellent American accent at the foot of the cross

Yes, I noticed that but it seems that people are still finding it interesting. So they’re posting.
