Yesterday I went to see this tour de force and highly recommend it - was totally absorbed from start to finish.

I knew the basic story of the 'Father of the atomic bomb' but there was so much I didn't know, particularly his life after WW2. It was of course very thought-provoking.

And a stellar cast too.

We showed it at our community cinema a couple of months ago. I had been warned it was long and our town hall seats are not comfy. We have an interval with tea and cake so I thought I could escape if I needed to.
I was totally absorbed! It was excellent. We always have subtitles so it's much easier to follow.

Last night we watched Limbo, a film about Asylum seekers on a remote Scottish Island awaiting the government decisions. It was good and poignant.

No surprise that Oppenheimer scooped 7 Oscars at the Academy Awards last night. Director Christopher Nolan, Best Actor Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor Robert Downey Jnr. have all waited a long time for an Oscar. On a personal level I would have liked to see Lily Gladstone take Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon but it was not to be.

I think I need to watch the BBC version, too, before I rewatch the film.

I treated myself last night to Oppenheimer on Sky as I was hesitant when it was first released about sitting for over three hours. Was pleasantly surprised when the price came up as £4.99 which was cheaper and more comfortable than sitting in the cinema. However I must say that I was so glad I had watched the BBC's version as I would never have worked out who was who trying to follow the dialogue in the first ten minutes or so but it vastly improved after than and I did manage to sit watching it without a break. Well worth the money!!!!!

I usually prefer watching a film either on my own at home or at the cinema. Never a good idea to watch in an all age group. I’ll be rewatching it several times. I’m useless when it comes to films or tv series: can never work out what’s going on.

A remarkable film doing justice to a great man. I recommend Einstein and the Bomb to go with it - not as brilliant but uses the great scientist's own words throughout.

I found Lincoln tedious too MayBee inspite of Daniel Day Lewis being one of our finest actors.

I never tire of watching The Last of the Mohicans!

'Oppenheimer' is a wonderful subject but I found the film irritating, mainly because of the many flashes forward and back with no explanation. The music was excellent but should have stopped during the sequence when the bomb was detonated. I'll look out for the 1980s dramatisation.

I had looked forward to seeing this film. I wasn't impressed at all. It was tedious. Unnecessarily drawn out and boring. I was actually glad I'd fallen asleep for half an hour of it and hadn't missed anything important.
The subject of the film is incredibly important and interesting. This rendition of it was just self important and, well, dull.

I like the way it’s making me learn more about what happened as I tend to shy away from anything as terrifying as the thought of nuclear war. Cillian Murphy was superb: as my daughter said ‘ how can someone act so much with just their eyes’ and was a master class in acting. He deserves the recognition he is now getting. It reminded me a bit of the Daniel Day Lewis film about Lincoln which I found a bit tedious. I rather expected an amazing soundtrack but, even though that has won awards it wasn’t, for me, memorable in any way. Maybe I’ll like it more after a second viewing but a film should grab you first time round. You should be gripped by a film even if you know what’s going to happen eg Zero Dark Thirty.

Glad Barbie didn't win any BAFTAS, man bashing drivel. Oppenheimer was a worthy winner Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey jnr. both superb.

I watched it and it was a story that I knew the basic plot, so no real surprises, it was of course well dramatized and acted. If I’m going to pay to go to the cinema I like a storyline that is revealed during the film.

I have not seen Barbie but I’m sure the GC loved it no surprises that it has made a great deal of money, nor that it got no BAFTAS

hastle = hassle

biglouis Tue 20-Feb-24 00:26:18

I no longer go to the cinema as its a taxi ride into the city plus entry fees. Too much hastle. Cheaper to wait til its available for streaming.

It was available a couple of weeks ago so I actually watched it in one session. Its very unusual for me to watch TV for three hours but I was very much drawn in. There are also a couple of other documentaries on netflix about this period.

7 well deserved BAFTA's for Oppenheimer. It bodes well for the Oscars next month.

A good companion film to the new film Oppenheimer or TV's The Trials of Oppenheimer is George Clooney's 2005 Goodnight and Good Luck. This also stars David Straithairn, this time as CBS's Edward Murrow taking on Joseph McCarthy. It's currently on ITVX.

Robert Downey Junior plays Joe Wershba who reported on the case of USAF Milo John Radulovich accused of Communist connections and sympathies which sets the whole story in motion. Downey is also in Oppenheimer as Lewis Strauss, a driving force in the controversial hearings against Oppenheimer, so the other side of the fence this time.

I’ve watched Goodnight And Good Luck and can recommend it. Edward Murrow was my Mum’s hero and I would have loved her to see it.

Back on BBC iPlayer is the excellent 2009 docudrama Storyville: The Trials of Oppenheimer. David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and narrated by Zoe Wanamaker

Thank you so much for this. I watched the film last night with the family It didn't help that I couldn’t put my usual subtitles up but I got very confused with all the characters. I’m now watching the documentary and will rewatch the film with subtitles. Sometimes finding out too much about a film ruins it but, in this case I wish I’d read up on it first.

I started watching the BBC version on BBC which was excellent especially when I discovered I could watch it on the iPlayer. As a result I watched it over the last two nights. I was contemplating heading to the cinema (and still am) but don't know if I can cope with three hours but then again that's what I did at home so think I will give it a try but am now thinking I would not enjoy the volume!! Too many buts so maybe just wait and pay for it on Sky so I can control the volume from my arm chair!!!!

Iam64 Mon 14-Aug-23 09:51:23

I once asked for the volume to be turned down. My autistic grandson was distressed - the volume was lowered
Maybe we should all ask?

Chestnut Mon 14-Aug-23 09:20:25

I agree the volume in most cinemas now is unacceptable. I bought concert earplugs and they work very well in lowering the sound level. They are for pop concerts. My grandchildren all have ear defenders as it's unfair to expect children to endure that level of noise, especially if they have a sensitivity to loud noise.

Grannycool52 Mon 14-Aug-23 08:58:51

I found this film superb and the acting first class.
The only part I wasn't happy with was Tom Conti as a cuddly Einstein.

Iam64 Mon 14-Aug-23 08:09:23

I agree about the film curlywhirly and even more so about the volume. I took my young grandchildren to the ninja turtle movie - same issue, deafening volume. It’s unnecessary

Curlywhirly Sun 13-Aug-23 23:48:04

Saw it yesterday - thought it was very good, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jnr gave excellent performances. My only criticism was the volume of the music - the whole cinema was shaking - I had to put my fingers in my ears!

lemsip Sun 13-Aug-23 09:24:05

knowing what it's about I just couldn't bear to go and see it!
