Only another month to go so I thought we'd better get the new thread up and running smile

I don't know many of this year's contestants so far but I guess we'll get to know them as the show continues. I see there are already comments that some of them have previous dance training.

Yes, we could do with some diversion for a few hours
There's always the rugby too ๐Ÿ™‚

Sex bombs galore!

Well, sturdy muscled men anyway!!

I am definitely in the mood to sit back and let is all wash over me.

That's probably the best way kittykester. Don't attach any great importance to the critique, it's all pretty subjective, and opinions are just that!

I'm sure I read it somewhere, but I agree a flirtatious cha cha cha would be more suited to the music.

Sparklefizz Sat 14-Oct-23 15:59:20

Gosh! "Sex Bomb" doesn't sound like an American Smooth.... maybe Dave Arch has come up with a clever arrangement.

Joseann Sat 14-Oct-23 13:51:06

Yes, we could do with some diversion for a few hours.
I think I read Eddie is dancing an American smooth to Tom Jones' Sex Bomb this week. Plenty of scope for his hip movements. It will either be very good, or very trashy!

Well, here we are, another Saturday and thank goodness we have Strictly at 6.30pm to give our spirits a boost when it's been a horrible week in the world.
See you later .....

I look forward to Thursdays on "It Takes Two" - I love seeing the outfits that Vicky Gill has designed and made for some of the dancers.

Joseann Thu 12-Oct-23 15:41:00

The choreographer who designs the "couples' choice" dances is herself stage school trained, (Laines), and developed the street dance syllabus for UDO. Maybe that's why Shirley gave it a 10 because she was certainly scathing of Karen's choreography the week before.

Sparklefizz Wed 11-Oct-23 18:36:19

Thanks Joseann. I appreciate your comments.

Joseann Wed 11-Oct-23 18:14:42

I don't think Eddie really deserved a 10 from Shirley, although his dance had energy and suited his personality. That's the thing about street dance, the dancer can improvise because, as far as I can tell, there are no proper rules. In my training days, 1970s, we learnt old-school street dances like tap dancing and break dancing, but new-school street dance has moved on to hip hop, house, and techno.
I don't think Eddie and Karen necessarily needed to be in perfect sync as long as their movements as a whole were sharp and rhthmically snappy. From what I recall, Eddie's quick, short steps didn't change into long, smooth steps as fluidly as Karen's did. She bounces up, down and across with ease.
I would have given Eddie 8, but others who mainly focus on the spectacle, might have said 10 like Shirley.

Callistemon21 Wed 11-Oct-23 15:23:24

We'd noticed Shirley's scoring was a bit random in previous series.
Not that I am an expert in dance.

Sparklefizz Wed 11-Oct-23 15:20:07

Joseann As you have dance training, I'd be very interested to know what you thought of Shirley awarding a 10 to Eddie. I have no dance training myself but even I noticed that his hand movements were not in sync with Karen's yet Shirley clearly thought his performance was perfect.

She gave a much lower score to Amanda and Gio's beautiful Rumba, (a 7 I think) despite admitting that Amanda had mastered the splits perfectly in just a week whereas she had taken years to manage the same herself.

What do you think?

Theexwife Wed 11-Oct-23 13:44:16

I fast forward the bits I am not interested in and watch the whole show in half an hour.

kittylester Wed 11-Oct-23 13:32:56

I think you've proved you are Jose. You and your DH can obviously spot bits I can't. I often watch with a granddaughter or two whose main focus is the spectacle.

As you say, everyone's different opinions are what makes this thread so good.

Joseann Wed 11-Oct-23 09:27:31

I'm not sure I am any more discerning than you are kittylester!! Maybe as I have been trained in dance and stage I am more invested in the show. Also DH was a London Theatre Lighting Director years ago too, so analyses all the special effects etc.
What I enjoy most on Sparklefizz's threads is everybody giving their different opinions, as that is exactly what happens amongst audiences the world over. Win some, lose some!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 11-Oct-23 09:23:24

Same here kittylester as far as Strictly goes.

kittylester Wed 11-Oct-23 09:17:38

It's weird, I am quite picky about most things on TV (apart from Stenders) but I just accept Strictly as it comes. I don't analyse it really, just sit back and enjoy. That probably says a lot more about me than you more discerning people. grin

NotSpaghetti Wed 11-Oct-23 08:33:42

Maybe it's just me then Danni!

DanniRae Wed 11-Oct-23 08:01:12

Yes, as I have already posted, it is too long but I don't think it is at all lacklustre. It is no different to previous years, in my opinion!

NotSpaghetti Tue 10-Oct-23 16:51:18

I can't quite understand why it's so lacklustre this year.
Maybe as others have said it's just too long.

Joseann Mon 09-Oct-23 20:41:46

I think for me, what has been lacking lately in Strictly are dances where we see true artistry and creative flair, like Rose and Giovanni. A lot of the dances are marking the paces until something really special comes along.
It was interesting to hear Craig comparing Annabelle with Darcey Bussell, and I see what he means about her carriage and poise.

TillyTrotter Mon 09-Oct-23 20:16:10

If I were Jody I think I would quit the show and look after my leg. It is not good that it was swollen and he had to remove the prosthetic for 2 days and rest it last week.
