Only another month to go so I thought we'd better get the new thread up and running smile

I don't know many of this year's contestants so far but I guess we'll get to know them as the show continues. I see there are already comments that some of them have previous dance training.

Important ! Strictly is on at 6.05pm tonight !!

Well done to their mum, then, for bringing up such lovely young men on her own.

Thanks for the info about Adam’s illness. What a dreadful shame. I watched a prog about him and his 2 brothers about 2 years ago and it was really sad.

The brothers are all close and have done well but their Jamaican father was pretty hopeless.
He cleared off and left them when they were all very small and one of the brothers on this prog cried his eyes out and asked him why he did it and did he know that they cried themselves to sleep every night for all their childhood. I don’t think he even apologised to them but said something like “I did what I did and nothing can change that.” They are lovely lads and that was probably one of the most moving things I saw on TV.

I have a friend who stormed off the stage when an adjudicator started criticising her dance! Admittedly we were only 15 at the time, but I did feel for her!
I think as a contestant, I would pull a face like Katya does perfectly!

Sparklefizz Tue 07-Nov-23 10:43:44

I like Angela S too. She just seems likeable and good fun, and she takes the judges' criticism week after week which must be very hard..

I have never liked Angela R in whatever programme she has appeared. There's just something about her that I can't warm to and you could see by her face that she was furious when she was finally criticised.

Allowances are not made for Paralympians who take part and dance with only one leg. In the same way I don't think allowances should be made for AR's age, and I am fed up with seeing that one leg up in the air which is her trademark gimmick.

Layton is also another one who doesn't like to be criticised by the judges.

I like Angela Scanlon though obviously she has plenty of dance faults but she seems to embrace the challenge, tries to listen and improve and seems to be a warm and thoughtful person. I think she's a pleasure to watch as you say Joseann and it's this kind of contestant I quietly cheer on at home.
She won't win, but it's nice to have her openness in the contest.

Grandmabatty Tue 07-Nov-23 09:30:25

Perhaps the judge see real potential in Angela Scanlon and the nit picking is an attempt to get her to go far in the competition? She definitely untrained and can be a bit wild at times. I think I'd rather have her with her sometimes awkward moves than Layton's polished smoothness.

Joseann Tue 07-Nov-23 08:30:14

AngelaS is an interesting one. To the untrained eye she dances well, but there are faults in her actual technique and the judges are quick to point these out. I'm not sure why they constantly pick on her though, I would be getting a bit cheesed off in her shoes because for most of us she is putting on a good show and is enjoyable to watch.

Yesterday evening my DH started waltzing around the room saying he was better than AR when he got his bronze medal when he was 14. He's a year younger than her. I thought that waltz was very boring.

What I don't understand is why the judges tell the contestants how wonderful their daces were and then give them low marks. AS in particular. Admire her for not having fake tan.

**Donte! In Waterloo Road in case anyone thinks I've lost the plot.

kittylester Mon 06-Nov-23 11:30:36

He is still referred to as Dante (sp?) In our house. We had a soft spot for him then and an even bigger soft spot now.

Sara1954 Mon 06-Nov-23 11:16:53

I wasn’t too sure about Adam at the beginning, but he’s really grown on me, I shall miss him.
Seems like a lovely man.

Callistemon21 Mon 06-Nov-23 10:46:13

I'll miss Adam's big smile 😁

Sparklefizz Mon 06-Nov-23 10:42:35

Primrose I read that Adam was only diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis a month before he was due to start training. He is still in the midst of getting to grips with his condition plus the medication, and I would think Strictly was the very last thing he should have contemplated doing at such a stage in his life.

I noticed in his farewell speech last night that he spoke to his children and said "Don't worry about Daddy. Daddy's ok." Bless him.

NotSpaghetti Mon 06-Nov-23 10:13:35

I think AR is a big of a one-trick pony unfortunately.
Yes, she can lift her leg (and very high if lifted for her) - but I don't like her "tight" style.

The others seem to call her "Queen" I think.

I thought Angela and Kai danced much better. Adam was dressed all in black (Which I feel was deliberate) so that his partner all in shimmering white took the spotlight. She danced very well but then she is a professional whereas Adam seemed
To walk rather than dance while the ficus was on his partner.

What are the medical issues he has?

He has rheumatoid arthritis. I think it was right for him to go, for his health's sake. Plus he was the worse of the two dance-offs on the night.

I do too, I felt sorry for him, he looked exhausted. I did wonder if that was taken into account by the judges or if he had voiced that it was time for him to go himself because he was struggling.

gma Mon 06-Nov-23 09:23:49

What a fix! Very obvious that Angela Ripoff was not going to be voted off, Adam and Luba were much better on the night!
Come on BBC be fair! Kai carried her round and the dance was laboured and heavy! Unfortunately she looked what she is! 79 year old woman dancing with a much younger man! That’s my opinion! Like it or lump it!!.

maddyone Mon 06-Nov-23 09:20:29

I hope Angela R isn’t kept on until the final. She’s good for her age, but her dances usually seem to be kept quite unchallenging to me, obviously because of their age. She’s had a fair run and it’s about time for her to go.

TillyTrotter Mon 06-Nov-23 09:19:15

Primrose
Rheumatoid Arthritis (recently diagnosed, possibly since he signed up for Strictly (? others might know on here).

What a lovely chap Adam is, he took his leaving with dignity and humbleness but Angela R should have gone I agree sumg.

Too many "buts" in that paragraph!

Joseann Mon 06-Nov-23 08:33:25

I guess sometimes older, experienced people, feel they've been there and done it all before, so do appear a bit smug. (Note to self, to shut up!!)
The thing I notice about AngelaR is that she doesn't interact with any of the other contestants. In previous shows we've had older celebrities being called "mum" by the others because they are supportive or kind. Not this time.
But I try to judge Angela on her dancing on the night. She is running out of time, but I hope AngelaS isn't up against her next week because the judges are biased. For me, sadly, Nigel could be in the danger zone, but he is still better than AngelaR.

Sara1954 Mon 06-Nov-23 08:03:52

DanniRae
I agree, she seems very smug to me as well.
If Blackpool is going to turn into the Angela Rippon show, I’m not sure I’ll even watch it.
Not fair on the other dancers who will have reached Blackpool because of their dancing skills, not their name.
