Any GNs going to the pub at 11a.m Sunday .? . my DD and friends having bottomless brunch to support the Lionesses (🤩) if it’s raining might watch it as do feel it’s a big accomplishment for women in football

Glad that it’s opened up football for girls as so many love it. Don’t deny it’s a wonderful achievement. However it doesn’t interest me one bit. Everything so loud, everyone gets so excited all the the jumping around and screeching not for me. It’s just a game. Know it’s a sin but I couldn't stand sports at school, did very well at just two but only did them because there was no alternative. Avoided them ever since but I loved walking and still do, the countryside and by the sea is where I’m happiest. If it’s a choice between sport on tv or nothing, I take nothing.
Understand we lost but they did well getting there so there’s always next time. The girl that wasn’t told about her father dying, perhaps it’s what he would have wanted too, so she did it for him too. He would have wanted her to have her dream.

There will be more coverage of the Letby case over weeks and weeks to come. More than I expect most us can cope with distressing as it will be. Today's break from it is welcome.

I have read that the Spanish footballer's father had been very ill for a long time and her mother and other family arrived in Sydney on Saturday to support her. Maybe they wanted her very much to compete ... and maybe he would have wanted her to as well.

Was it? I didn't watch.

How sad that a member of the Spanish team's father died on Friday but she wasn't told until after the match in case it affected her game. Talk about winning at all costs. What has happened to people?

And it was the girl who scored the winning goal 😢

The football news will be transitory MOnica.
The slow unravelling of the Lucy Letby horror’s will not, unfortunately more to come.

You bet!

Cynically amused that the loss of a football match, no matter how important, has driven every mention of the Lucy Letby trial and everything associated with it entirely from the BBC, and presumably other news outlets.

I am very clear which has the priority in my world - we lunched at a restaurant that was television free.

Your lunch, presumably.

Sunday: Watched at Irish Pub close to apartment on big screen.

We had lunch out and then walked over to the Irish Pub with big sport screens closed to our flat.

Grandma 70s and Oreo. I agree with every word you have said.
Still, each to their own I suppose.

Spain the better team, next time England... you did fanastically well making it into the Final.👍

I don’t think coverage of the Lucy Letby trial has been in any way diminished by the football. There has been blanket coverage of it for two days now and no doubt still more to come.

It is possible to indulge in some light relief without distracting from the reality of a harrowing event.

I don’t really have priorities where the ups and downs of news reporting are concerned. Just take it all as it comes.

I assume anyone lunching with you thinks the same😀.

No interest at all. In fact I find it a bit nightmarish, as they remind me of the ‘gamesey’ girls at school, whom I loathed. I don’t care who wins.

So why come on the thread?

For balance, to let people know there is another point of view, just as strongly held.

Am with you on that point of view Grandma70 and on that subject am fed up with seeing pics of snarling roaring women with blond ponytails plastered over every newspaper and mag.
Football and footballers of any sex have no allure to me.

👈 where is the FA President?

GrannySomerset Sun 20-Aug-23 13:40:22

As I watched from behind the sofa I remembered a football mad boyfriend telling me that the better team always seemed to have more players on the pitch, and it often looked like that today. Never mind, England, there is always next time.

Granmarderby10 Sun 20-Aug-23 13:37:51

Just what is that trophy?

Foxygloves Sun 20-Aug-23 13:29:47

JaneJudge

Facebook is littered with sexist comments about washing up and tea towels and it is actually making me feel quite murderous

Take the comments as ironic

silverlining48 Sun 20-Aug-23 13:25:28

Just remembered the football .... so after 4 lots of laundry thought i would Check here, oh dear, disappointment..

Callistemon21 Sun 20-Aug-23 13:25:16

Well done, Mary Earps!
Congratulations 🥇

Oh, what a shame. Bubbly will have to be saved for another day. Spain did play well, though, especially in the first half.

rafichagran Sun 20-Aug-23 13:11:13

I am proud of the English team, but the better team won.

MayBee70 Sun 20-Aug-23 13:10:03

I think the writing was in the wall when the team we beat in the semis lost so badly the other day. And we totally underestimated the Spanish team.
