We watched it, but I found it rather far fetched and sort of detracted from the horrors of the Magdalene Laundries.
Anyone else?

I recorded this and planned to watch it today, as the second episode is on tonight. But, is it creepy? If so I shan't bother. I don't like 'creepy'.

Calendargirl Mon 28-Aug-23 10:25:18

I thought it looked grim from the trailers, with Ruth Wilson in a dark wig and an Irish accent.

So I tuned in to Midsomer Murders instead.

“Of two evils…..”

It was dire.

Oh yes, it’s creepy all right, henetha. And grim.

I’m going to stick with it, at least for one more episode. It’s certainly different, but I’m not sure how believable it’s going to be. And I agree that if the storyline is too far fetched, it might detract from the true horrors of the Magdalene Laundries.

Thanks Maggiemay. I probably won't bother then. smile

I gave it a try but far too creepy for me so I will give it a miss.

I found it intriguing and compelling , so I shall continue . I want to see if a theory I have is right .I do like Ruth Wilson.

Delila Mon 28-Aug-23 10:40:59

It’s creepy and grim but also humorous, well acted and very Irish. I was ready to switch off at first, but now I’m hooked.

BlueBelle Mon 28-Aug-23 12:44:04

I didn’t find it too creepy but not sure it’s not too far fetched I ll carry on though

Farmor15 Mon 28-Aug-23 13:00:04

I watched it and not sure yet what to make of it - Ruth Wilson is excellent though, but not sure about other actors. It's supposed to be in Ireland, but being Irish, I thought there was something slightly "off" about it, then I looked to see where it was filmed - Northern Ireland. Building styles, road signs etc are slightly different but anyone not Irish wouldn't notice and it doesn't detract from the story.
I think there will be more about the Magdalen laundries in future episodes.

MerylStreep Mon 28-Aug-23 13:11:16

I don’t see how it detracted from the horrors of the Magdalene laundries.
I help to support a neighbour who went into one when she was 7. I doubt there is a time when I see her that she doesn’t relive the horrors.
She was raped when she was 15 and had no idea what had happened until it was obvious that she was pregnant.

We’ll watch the next episode, might be just me, MrJ liked it, maybe as he’s Northern Irish! I agrée there were some good humorous touches.

I watched the first episode and like some other posters I did not find it creepy. It was a little bit difficult to make out what was going on at first but then I caught on to what it is about. I will continue to keep watching although I already feel sad for the main character (Ruth Wilson) so many mental health problems because of her past.

Gingster Mon 28-Aug-23 14:29:06

It was creepy 🫣, but I enjoyed the Irishness of it. We often visited my in laws in the west of Ireland and the characters are very typical.
Sort of a dark comedy.

Bridie22 Mon 28-Aug-23 14:35:38

I enjoyed it, will carry on watching .

Kate1949 Mon 28-Aug-23 16:28:34

I will give it a go. I love most things Irish. My parents were from Eire and we've been many times.

dogsmother Mon 28-Aug-23 16:29:35

Really sorry kind of tragic to me, will definitely continue with it.

Curlywhirly Mon 28-Aug-23 16:50:58

I can't say I enjoyed it - I found it a little disjointed and quite depressing. Don't think I will watch any further episodes.

inishowen Mon 28-Aug-23 18:11:19

It was a hard watch but women who went through the laundry system are very damaged. What slightly annoys me is the way Irish country police officers are portrayed as bumbling idiots. They're aren't!

I just wish in most of the modern dramas they would use better lighting! I'm constantly trying to literally peer into the dark corners.

MerylStreep Mon 28-Aug-23 22:13:00

I wonder why the bbc aren’t putting all episodes on iplayer.

Bridie22 Tue 29-Aug-23 07:24:26

Oh I was hoping the had, fell asleep in the middle of last nights episode !!

nipsmum Tue 29-Aug-23 12:30:33

It is on I player. Just one episode at a time, at the moment. I remember hearing about these things when I was younger. It is a dramatisation of events.

Namsnanny Tue 29-Aug-23 12:38:28

Delila

It’s creepy and grim but also humorous, well acted and very Irish. I was ready to switch off at first, but now I’m hooked.

Me too. I hoped the full series was on iplayer so I could binge watch. But not so.
It is unusual to wait a week for the next episode nowadays.

Namsnanny Tue 29-Aug-23 12:39:39

Sorry Nipsmum didnt see your post.
