We watched it, but I found it rather far fetched and sort of detracted from the horrors of the Magdalene Laundries.
Anyone else?

Very good ending. No Disney style reunion thank goodness.

Glorianny Sun 24-Sept-23 22:15:21

Brilliant and so gripping, but very emotional. The scene in the children's home when she thought the man was going to help her was so shocking. The way he suddenly turned on her!

Brilliant last episode. Ruth Wilson was outstanding. Very thought provoking series.

Likewise I wasn't sure I wanted to continue watching after episode 1 but it's absolutely gripping. And so well acted.DH often does puzzles on his ipad when we watch TV but he's as hooked as me.Best drama in ages .And so sad what those women went through.

I can only echo others, it’s really one of the best dramas in a long time.

Fairislecable Mon 18-Sept-23 18:18:43

I was very doubtful of this series at episode1, but each episode has got better and better. I am absolutely gripped by the whole storyline and Ruth Wilson has such facial control each little twitch portrays her thoughts.

This episode I realised instead of slumping back on the sofa I was literally perched on the edge of my seat gripping the arms!

Fantastic drama

Delilah - oh you could be right! I thought she found a carrier bag at the house containing documents but now I'm not sure. When it's finished I might have to watch the whole series again!

Delila Mon 18-Sept-23 17:33:43

I thought she obtained the death certificates by breaking into the records office after hours?

I’m not clear on the history of the abandoned house though, but wondered if her baby was the result of a traumatic incident that occurred there, one that she was reliving by going there again.

eddiecat78 Mon 18-Sept-23 08:44:16

Best series I've seen for ages but can anyone remind me what is the history of the abandoned building where Lorna found the death certificates?

Allsorts Mon 18-Sept-23 07:31:04

The ending last night confused me more than ever. I was crying when one of the women described how she had a traumatic birth how nuns ripped the baby from her and put her to work in the laundry the next day and she wasn't given stitches if any care. Just what sort of people were those nuns? Acting superb, hard to watch but it needs to be said, just hope there's some light in it next week for last episode.

Bridie22 Sun 17-Sept-23 22:13:17

Me too, for some reason I thought tonight was the last episode !

merlotgran Sun 17-Sept-23 22:11:30

This just gets better and better. Can’t wait for next week.

Ithink this is very hard to watch, last night in particular. I agree that it wo.uld be good to be able to see the final episodes now, but I dont think I could binge watch. Amazing acting from Ruth Wilson

eddiecat78 Tue 12-Sept-23 17:09:00

Loving it - but where did she get all those candles?!

Bridie22 Mon 11-Sept-23 06:37:22

Really enjoying this series, Allsorts like you can't wait for the next episodes, unusual they aren't on iplayer.

Allsorts Sun 10-Sept-23 22:39:10

I enjoyed it, would like to see the last two episodes now,

Clawdy Sun 10-Sept-23 22:32:15

Bit predictable tonight, guessed Colman would find his own death certificate. Two more episodes left - surely one would be enough.

Allsorts Mon 04-Sept-23 18:43:47

I wouldn’t like to have been in that house with her, I thought she was going to kill the daughter looking for her mom.. Don’t really know what she recollects is imagined or is true. I cannot understand how the nuns and the priests could be so cruel to young girls or anyone. It just shows they had no faith, all a big con, so why were they there? I cannot imagine the pain of those girls, it is heartbreaking. Hopefully some people might find out about their stolen babies, to hold their child once more however old they are. If my mother had been one of them I don’t think I could cope, knowing what she suffered. I wasn’t going to watch it this week but weakened. Very good acting by everyone, it needs exposing, people should know what cruel hypocrites they were.

Gripping but grim. And yes, rather farfetched in places. Finding it hard to warm to Ruth Wilson's character, which is a shame.

I ve watched two and think it’s brilliantly acted and a great portrayal so blooming sad enjoying is nt the right word but Im really appreciating it I think it’s well done

thomasina34 Thu 31-Aug-23 14:47:53

I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes

Maggiemaybe Thu 31-Aug-23 14:37:34

ITV’s Long Lost Family had a False Identities Special a couple of weeks ago featuring adopted Irish children who had no idea who their birth parents were as their adoptive or foster parents had been named as such on their birth certificates.

Devorgilla Thu 31-Aug-23 14:35:40

I think you have to put the far fetched parts into the perspective of what happened to her when she was just pregnant. She got sent away to a horrendous place for 'correction'. She probably assumed that if she informed the Police of the dead woman she would receive the same treatment and therefore it was better to hide it out of sight. She was taken away in that green car so, again, destroying it was cathartic. Sadly, damaged people don't always make the right choices. Anyway, it makes for a more interesting storyline.

Farmor15 Thu 31-Aug-23 14:02:37

Yes, I saw that. It was very funny as well as being a true story. I hadn't realised Dara had been adopted. Glad it worked out well for him in the end.

Lots of adopted people in Ireland and mothers whose children were adopted have told their stories about all the obstacles put in their way - the nuns in particular often told lies about "lost" records etc. when contacted!

Glorianny Thu 31-Aug-23 13:50:38

This is sort of connected. Has anyone watched Dara O'Briain and his stand-up routine about trying to trace his birth parents in Ireland? Until very recently adoptees had no right to know. and no one was supposed to help them find out. His story about the librarians who knew he what he was doing and tried to steer him in the right direction is hilarious.
