I was browsing for something to watch and came across this lovely series. I remember it from quite a while ago but never watched it (I think Terry Wogan used to rave about it on his radio show) It's such a change from all of the police thrillers and murder mysteries on TV at the moment to go back to when life was slower paced and people had a great sense of community. I find it a lovely uplifting series. Anyone else remember this?

I love the series, will watch it again come winter. .

I loved that series too, my one weakness smile

I read the book donkeys years ago and watched the series - delightful.

What’s it on?

Pudding123 Wed 06-Sept-23 21:29:26

Could you please let me know where to find this ,Thank you.

I've just bought all the DVDs in a charity shop. Looking forward to cosy winter evenings watching them.
I remeber Anniebach recommending the book, which I enjoyed.

I downloaded 'UKTVPlay' it's a free channel. I see Cranford is on it aswell I'm going to watch that next

I think the first series captured the spirit of the books well (but oh, they struggle with Midland-ish accents!). Later it strayed rather, with stock plots being slotted in.
The book is a wonderful piece of social history.

Absolutely spot on, Nannarose; once it became a vehicle for Dawn French it suffered. And yes, the books are a joy.

We had the series on dvd and watched them on our touring caravan holidays. Gentle, relaxing entertainment.

Love this book, went on Flora Thompson walking weekend years ago. I did find the series a bit too sweet at first but did get into it. I would definitely like to watch it again, and Cranford so will look out for them both.

Just read a couple of reviews which said Lark Rise to Candleford was a very pleasant, good piece of drama - a fairytale but very good.

It isn't a fairytale or fictional although perhaps Flora Thompson's books were semi-autobiographical, rather than absolute fact and names were changed.
Some of the characters are in my family tree 🙂
(Not the Dawn French character!)

One of my favourite books, I’ve got a beautiful illustrated one that I got my mum to buy for me years ago, and a really old copy that I found in a charity shop. The tv series was lovely. I used to love books like that. Cider with Rosie, A Child in the Forest, A Ragged Schooling.

Oldbat1 Wed 06-Sept-23 23:46:24

Yes loved the series and the book.

It was absolutely wonderful, and made me laugh when they 'popped' back and forth from the two places on foot when it was about 5 miles between them I think. They often spoke as if they were 5 mins walk away.

Don't forget on Drama channel (UKTV Play) there are also the wonderful Catherine Cookson stories, very similar but mostly set in the early 1900s. I think I've watched them all but may start again one day. Interesting plots, compelling characters who you really care about, they are fabulous for winter evenings.

I started watching it and binged watched to the very end. Then I bought the dvd so now when I feel down or in need of cheering up I can watch it whenever I feel like.
Wonderful acting and lovely to watch its totally absorbing when this world and all its troubles makes you feel down.

Redhead56 Thu 07-Sept-23 00:07:25

I also did the same with Catherine Cookson binged watched it then bought the dvd box set. I know for sure I have plenty of quality drama to watch when feeling a bit down.

I loved the first series, but when they left the original book behind it all got a bit nonsensical

Sassanach512 Thu 07-Sept-23 00:46:14

You're right chestnut I've scrolled through the drama section of UKTVPlay and there seems to be all of the Catherine Cookson stories on there also ' When the boat comes in ' which was another good series and so many others. It looks like my Autumn and Winter viewing is sorted smile

I watched it again - it's pure escapism from the somewhat horrible reality of society today... an antidote.

I also re-watched the TV production of Pride and Prejudice - absolute indulgence... for the same purpose - escapism!

Calendargirl Thu 07-Sept-23 06:03:03

I watched it, but found it a bit depressing.

It was on Sunday evenings, and always got that ‘school next day’ feeling as I viewed, with Monday and work the next day.

I read the book years ago and lent it to someone who never returned it. The book had lovely illustrations if I recall. Also enjoyed the tv series.

karmalady Thu 07-Sept-23 06:52:39

I have the old dvds and many others including when the boat comes in and catherine cookson. I also kept the free dvds when they were given with weekend newspapers. Good quality dvds too and will be wonderful escapism when dark winter evenings are here.
