“ I wonder, I wonder” That Cunard ad on tv.

This really annoys me! I can’t quite say why , but the voice irritates me and the suggestions he makes seem very trite.
The 40-second ad invites us “to dream of love, banquets, journeys and music beyond all belief and then, once you have done all that, forget that you were dreaming”. It features the voice of British philosopher, writer, and speaker Alan Watts. But it grates. Certainly doesn’t make me want to book a Cunard cruise!

I think it's a very clever advert as it's causing a fair amount of online discussion on various platforms, none if which is particularly negative. I hadn't noticed the advert myself but did follow a link and watched it. Although it wasn't my dream l had the opportunity to cruise Cunard, it proved to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life, l absolutely loved it.

It's probably an attempt to imitate a volkswagen ad that used Burton's real voice and Dylan Thomas's words.. I never saw it but apparently it is a classic. The music is annoying, but Burton's voice,,,,

It’s just an ad so I don’t get worked up about it.
I’ve been on several cruises, enjoyed them all, and with several different cruise lines. I did go with Cunard once, to Norway, and I’ve been back twice since, but on different cruise lines, but always on cruises. It’s the best way to see Norway in my opinion. Nothing can beat sailing in or out of a fiord, it’s absolutely awe inspiring.

I like the idea of making some of my dreams come true, of course. But they wouldn’t be what is suggested in this advert. Nor would a cruise be among them! Too many people, too much emphasis on over indulgence and just tantalising glimpses of places I might want to spend much longer exploring. It would drive me mad!

I really cringe at the voiceover on the Viking cruises. Especially the way she says "thar" instead of "there"

Been on several cruises ...seen most of the world, met some fascination and interesting people .....both on cruises starting in the UK, in Fort Lauderdale, Bergen, Southampton, Liverpool etc BUT may have now been on my LAST ...WHY ? since I love them ? simply because, last week I had an ad on my phone for a cruise which looked lovely, places I would like to visit ...went straight into the travel agent to book ...advertised at a good solo offer ....SO in I went, Agent called the cruise line .....offer advertised at £2,900 with special solo offers ........CAME OUT AT OVER £6,000 !!!!! apparently solo offer was only for drinks (I dont drink !) ....what they charge a solo is now getting totally ridiculous ! Asked many cruise lines why ? any excuse...'solos dont spend as much ' (they clearly haven't been in the ship shop or spa with me !)...AND solos , I have pointed out, do not eat as much as a couple ...and surely cleaning the cabin takes less effort when it is occupied by one, than two !!!! furious !..........shame, as there are cruises I wanted to go on, but refuse to be held at ransom (booked up a package holiday instead !!!!) .......) interestingly, on one cruise line site, a man boasted that 'myself and my wife NEVER spend one penny beyond the cost of the cruise;....so they make more money out of me ...I just hope they have to sail with unsold, empty cabins ......if that is what they prefer to having a solo traveller .....................grr (and one was with a specialist solo traveller site ..Passion for Cruises !!!! {anger}

Never been on a cruise, but love the ad and AW’s voice.

NanaRoo Sun 17-Sept-23 18:26:56

I can’t bear it, don’t know why, but obviously not alone by reading your replies.

buffyfly9 Sun 17-Sept-23 18:20:23

It's ghastly, it makes me want to be sick, I also don't really understand what the advert is trying to say. Is it suggesting that we should lean on the ship's rail and reminisce about our affairs (if we had any). It is pretentious rubbish.

I dislike the ad too!
I’ve been on 2 Cunard cruises and am about to go on a third, this time on the Queen Elizabeth. I don’t find them at all snobby. Like any other cruise you’ll find a wide variety of people. Last year we met some “ordinary” people like us. Any holiday is what you make it. There are far too many preconceptions about cruising usually from those who have no idea what they’re like. Regarding the cost it’s clearly not a cheap holiday but surprisingly affordable in comparison with some. We search for good deals and usually find something.

Am I allowed to complain about another holiday ad?
Close your eyes now and swiftly move on if so.
It’s a cheap flight one, can’t remember exactly which.
Two women in an open topped car. The driver is having such a fabulous carefree holiday that she celebrates by taking off her headscarf and throwing it out of the car🤷🏼‍♀️.
What is that about?

Thelma and Louise?
Perhaps they don't know what happened to them!

They are a spoof on the Girl with the pearl earring painting. Setting herself free on holiday, the full ad shows mona Lisa escaping too.

Orly…that made me laugh 😂 thankyou

The ad also annoys me intensely especially as my husband always continues the rhyme
"I wonder, I wonder
What you would do
If you went to the loo
and couldn't do
a great big poo"

Granjeanne Sun 17-Sept-23 15:17:42

Mt husband = my husband!

Granjeanne Sun 17-Sept-23 15:13:22

Awful, just awful. I have been on many cruises, as Mt husband and I find that cruises tick most of our holiday "boxes", but the Cunard advert is trite, boring and totally unappealing. I doubt whether anyone has booked a cruise with them on the strength of this advert!

PamelaJ1 Sun 17-Sept-23 15:08:01

That’s not my problem and I’m sure you are right but….I just want them to stop the car and pick it up!!

I cannot abide it. What it is offering in the dream are situations that I would hate anyway. Dressing up and fine dining ( albeit alone) are my idea of hell. I cringe every time it comes on.

Harris27 Sun 17-Sept-23 13:48:44

Hubby loves cruises and I don’t mind them. Better than flying which I hate get on at Southampton get off sheer luxury for me . Do like the though as ever is done for you.

Sleepygran Sun 17-Sept-23 13:44:57

It irritates me too! Dreaming first of all of love affairs,I think not!more like nightmares!

Nannapat1 Sun 17-Sept-23 13:43:18

I've been on several cruises, one on a yacht with only 36 guests and the most recent Cunard, The Queen Elizabeth and enjoyed them all. That advert wouldn't persuade me to book a cruise though.

TiggyW Sun 17-Sept-23 13:42:21

I love cruises, but I’ve never wanted to try Cunard. They sound too formal and snobby.
It’s interesting that some people say they don’t like cruises when they’ve never tried one! There’s no problem with being ‘stuck’ on a ship - there’s so much to do, and if you don’t want to do anything, there are plenty of quiet corners, lounges, decks, or maybe your own balcony…😎 I’d rather wake up in a different place every morning than be ‘stuck’ in one hotel for a week or two!!
The advert which annoys me at the moment is the Audi one with Jorja Smith. I had to Google who she is. It’s on ITV every few minutes. Are those lips real?! 🤔

BlueBelle Sun 17-Sept-23 13:33:44

I don’t think I ve ever seen it, is it an ITV one ?

AreWeThereYet Sun 17-Sept-23 13:26:43

Haven't seen that one but the ad for Viking cruises on one of the Freeview channels with the breathy girl's voice makes me want to throw something at the screen. I think it's shown around the Poirot series but could be wrong 🤢🤢🤢
