The Long Shadow on ITVX

I have watched the first two episodes, what stands out for me is the attitude of some of the police officers because the women were prostitutes.

Despite the subject matter I am enjoying it.

Watched the whole series. I run out of swear words Re the attitude of the police.

Excellent. I agree the attitude of the police is awful.

I lived in Whaley Range during the ripper years. Large Victorian, Edwardian houses often now multiple occupancy. I walked my 6 year old to school, along a road of good 1930’s owner occupied houses. My neighbours were teachers, doctors etc. this is only relevant because we mothers were constantly asked by men in expensive cars as we escorted our children, safety in groups “are you working love, how much’. I don’t know anyone who allowed their children to walk to school without an adult.
We were very relieved by the visible police presence, as were the ‘working girls’.

I've watched the first two episodes as well, sparked memories of all the news items and stories which were around at the time. I agree with others about the attitude of the police at the time. For some officers sadly not a lot seems to have changed.

In fairness, the police are drawn from society so there will be some attitudes I find offensive. Much like some of the comments on forums seeking to blame women for the bad behaviour if men

A policeman in his private opinions may not be very sympathetic towards prostitutes but he would need to rise above his personal feelings within his job the same as a surgeon may not have much time for a drug addict but he/ she would use the same care operating on them as on a Prince

Yes of course I do BlueBelle. The culture within which they work should create a workplace where racism, misogyny etc are unacceptable. My experience of police training was it aimed to achieve that.
These private whatsap groups we’ve all been disgusted by highlight just how awful some attitudes are

As in other key agencies, training in police forces had its budgets slashed. I know training isn’t a magic wand but it does mean attitudes are challenged

Goodness me, this series is not doing my blood pressure any good. Not only the tension generally, but I am finding myself furious with the way women were treated back then (even though I lived through it myself at the time but somehow was less aware back then) and also furious with the stubbornness and downright stupidity of the police. Grrr!

But it is definitely an excellent piece of television.

Not all policemen were the same back then, just as they aren’t now either.Remember this is a dramatisation of events.
Good acting all round I could watch Toby Jones, Lee Ingleby and David Morrissey acting all day long.

Oh, I know all about misogyny in the police force unfortunately for me. I was married to a detective in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

1970’s, 1980’s, women didn’t judge prostitutes ?

Annie, I think you’re making the point that negative attitudes to sex workers existed then, as it does now, in women as well as men.

Yes I am Iam , unmarried mothers were still being judged

I’m enjoying the series. The policemen were probably typical of their time, and of course negative attitudes towards sex workers haven’t gone away all these years later, in both men and women. We’re just more careful about what we say.

I think this series will win awards. It's very powerful, well acted and scripted.

If this happened today, I doubt the general public would have much sympathy for the sex workers.
Some attitudes never really change.
The police wouldn’t be so obvious about it though.

I’ve only watched episode one. It’s good and reflects social attitudes of that time fairly accurately.
Kadinsky, read any gransnet thread about young women/adolescent girls being sexually exploited and see many posts blaming those girls for lifestyle choices

Sex workers in towns like the ones the ripper operated in Will mainly be addicted to drugs, so probably get even less sympathy.

The majority of victims in the ripper murders were not adolescent girls.

We have moved on from the 50’s - ‘it’s up to the boy to try and the girl to say no’. Now we are reaching -‘all girls are victims and all men are sexual predators’.

But they were victims. They were murdered.
We are not moving towards anything of the sort, whatever the likes of Lawrence Fox like to spout.

Okay for those able to afford a new tv. I can’t get itvxon my tv. There’s nothing wrong with my 55” tv I saved up to get a few years back so this is s programme I won’t be able to see. Or didn’t you realise it pulled the plug and older tvs can’t get ITVX. I’m too old to spend money on a new tv , so unless I hear about an upcoming series I’d like to see and video it, then ITVX is unavailable to me. And quite a few older people too.

I eventually got ITVX. I don't use it unless l have to. It's rubbish. I have to log in every time l use it email and password. Unless l pay extra l have to put up with the adverts. It freezes and takes a while to come back to the pr ogramme l am watching.
