OH and I were so terrified after watching Carrie that we couldn’t park the car in the garage! The Innocents is terrifying too.

None of those. What I’d like is one of the M R James ghost stories. The one the BeeB did last Christmas (The Mezzotint) was brilliant - I can’t think why they don’t do them more often.

Another one is Don’t Look Now, starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. It’s about a bereaved couple who visit Venice after their child is drowned in an accident. They meet a couple of elderly psychic sisters and needless to say, everything goes downhill from there.

I highly recommend an old 1940’s Ealing Studios movie called Dead of Night. You can stream it online at JustWatch.com and ITVX. It was the only ‘horror’ film made during WW11, as they were mostly banned during that time. Stars Melvyn Johns an Google Withers.

Essentially it’s an anthology of horror tales. An architect visits an old country farmhouse in connection with some work and when he arrives at the house, he gets the feeling that he has been there before. The owner invites him to join a group of guests who familiar to him. He tells them that he has dreamt about each one of them and begins to list events that occurred in the recurring dream. This a starts a conversation amongst the group, and each person admits to having experienced a strange, unexplainable event.

It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s genuinely one of the creepiest and most atmospheric films I’ve ever seen with a great plot twist. Well worth a watch and perfect for Halloween.

I won’t be watching scary films - I have enough trouble sleeping - but if I had to think of a film that scared the living daylights out of me it would be “Woman in Black”!

If you want a ghost film rather than horror to watch 'The Changeling ' with George C Scott is a good one and there's that old black and white film called 'The Innocents ' starring Deborah Kerr which was quite unsettling. I remember watching it when I was young and having to sleep under the bedcovers afterwards 👻

I have seen and enjoyed both of these films. The scariest old film I have ever seen is The Haunting. It was from 1963 and in black and white, which I think made it more scary. Julie Harris was in it. They did a remake in the 1990's (I think) but it was rubbish.

Witzend - I love the MR James Ghost Stories that the BBC show at Christmas. The Lost Hearts one scared me stiff when I first saw it at about 12 years old. I am so pleased that Mark Gatiss is reviving the BBC Christmas Ghost Story and MR James. He also did a documentary about MR James which was very interesting. I think you can get it on IPlayer

I'd recommend 'Us' as a good horror film if you haven't seen it. It's on iPlayer

nana8 , I am with you. My daughter and SIL ' celebrate ' Halloween so I endeavor to get into the ' spirit ' of it! I know it seems like harmless fun and I know I will be thought if as a killjoy but it's just not my bag!!!!

Yes Wednesday! The DANCE - love it.

We will probably have an assortment of GC so the viewing will be Hocus Pocus, Casper and a couple episodes of Wednesday.

I might watch The Sixth Sense again if I have the stamina after cooking Halloweeny bits, putting the decorations up, dressing up, going out with grand-daughters and daughter trick or treating, playing some games - even apple bobbing - and drinking a Purple Storm cocktail. Yes, I think I can collapse and watch one of the best creepy films ever after all that.
