Is on BBC2 on Friday (22nd) at 9am. I’d never heard of this film but have been told several times now that it’s a Christmas must watch. So I must remember to watch it!

Celieanne86 I watched this film a while ago. A gentle watch and Cary Grant a great actor.

I only came across The Bishop's Wife a few years ago, but it's one of my favourites now.

The Bishops Wife was recommended to me a couple of years ago, but I wasn’t keen. Loved The Holly and the Ivy however.

I watched this film last night when I couldn’t sleep as I was worrying about arranging my husbands funeral. I do remember going to see it at our local cinema with my sister when I was about 11/12 I absolutely loved it, Loretta Young’s eyes so beautiful and the gorgeous Cary Grant how could you not enjoy it. Thank you whoever told us it was on so early you helped me a lot.

Glad you liked it. I don’t know why I’ve never known of the film before. There’s something rather lovely about Cary Grant, isn’t there. I read that David Niven was supposed to play Dudley but then they changed director and the new director switched them round; a stroke of genius imo.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) is showing on UK's Channel 5

Another of my favourite Christmas classics is Miracle on 34th Street - both versions. MrA looks a lot like Richard Attenborough's version of Santa Claus at this time of year 😄

I watched it several nights ago, I enjoyed it in spite of being schmaltzy and sentimental, a lovely film from a bygone age. Sometimes those productions complete with heavenly choirs are bit of escapism and great for hunkering down on a winter night pre Christmas.

Thanks for recommending "The Bishop's Wife" - a lovely film, and I especially enjoyed the ice skating scene!

*The Bishop’s Wife* is a true Christmas classic - I never miss it, watch it every year. The film is very Christmasy and sweet. I love the old black and white films from the 40’s… It’s a Wonderful Life (James Stewart, Donna Reed) and Christmas in Connecticut (Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan), and the 1951(?) version of A Christmas Carol.
Happy Holidays!

Thanks for reminding me that I have the wonderful Christmas in Connecticut 1945 somewhere on dvd. It is a really funny farce where Barbara Stanwyck plays a food writer, who writes a sort of Nigella/Delia column about her perfect housewife lifestyle in a beautiful farmhouse in Connecticut with husband and family. The reality is that she lives alone in a tiny New York apartment ... oh and she can't actually cook. However chaos ensues when her boss announces that himself and a famous war hero will be broadcasting live at Christmas from her lovely imaginary Connecticut farmhouse .....

this is also good

The Preacher's Wife is a 1996 American Christmas comedy-drama film directed by Penny Marshall and starring Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston, and Courtney B. Vance. It is a remake of the 1947 film The Bishop's Wife, which in turn was based on the 1928 novel of the same name by Robert Nathan.

Many thanks for this. Must admit I wouldn’t have noticed it at all. All set to record, new film for me.

paddyann54 Thu 21-Dec-23 12:39:40

I watch it every year its the best Christmas film in my opinion. Its always on my DVD player on Christmas Eve

Cold Thu 21-Dec-23 12:28:18

It is a great movie from 1947 - Carey Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young.

I have it on dvd as it is one of my Christmas musts to watch.

I read a fun fact the other day that I never knew before - originally the movie was cast the other way around with Carey Grant playing the Bishop and David Niven playing the Angel. But there were problems in the production - the director departed and a new director appointed. When the new director watched the footage that had been filmed by the previous director, he realized that the leading men were miscast and that they needed to play the opposite roles. Cary Grant was originally hard to convince to give up the "title role" but eventually they reshot it, and it became a classic.

justanovice Thu 21-Dec-23 12:20:59

Love this film. One of my favourites.

PinkCosmos Thu 21-Dec-23 11:36:04

On a bit of a tangent, the Archie series on ITVX is well worth a watch.

It is about the life of Cary Grant. Cary Grant is played by Jason Isaacs and he does a great job.

I think it is four one hour episodes.

DamaskRose Thu 21-Dec-23 11:23:10

Lovely film!

Irismarle Thu 21-Dec-23 11:22:12

I’ve never heard of it but I’ll definitely give it a watch.
Then we can discuss it after Christmas!
