I thought the first film pretty poor - such a silly plot, and the characters looked like actors playing characters. It felt much more like Real Downton by the second film. I suspect I sat and beamed at the screen through both.
Not a huge Tom fan: a bully to Sybil in the early series, and in the later series seemed obsessed by telling everyone he met that "I came to Downton as the chauffeur", whether they'd evinced the slightest interest or not.
I thought the way my sympathies were moved one way or another by the scriptwriting was clever. The first time I watched it I came in part way through, and accepted that Mary was a callous btch and poor Edith her downtrodden victim. When I rewatched from the start, it was "poor" Edith that was the first btch (that we saw) when she wrote to the Turkish embassy about Mr. Pamuk.
Gosh! I've got withdrawal symptoms already! I'll have to go and stream episode 1!!!!!
