So agree, Chestnut. I do love the Aussie output of series.
And ‘5 Bedrooms’ and ‘Colin from Accounts) are superb.
May I suggest a few other series that I have enjoyed over recent years (some more than once!). A few are about 20-years old but it doesn’t matter, they still work. All are available on AmazonPrime, FreeVee, iPlayer or channel Catch-ups.
‘Mystery Road’ - Police series with the amazing Aaron Pederson
‘Rake’ - Legal series. Very funny. And naughty - especially the episode guest starring Sam Neil ………
‘Jack Irish’ - Detective. Ex-Police. Starring Guy Pearce.
‘The Newsreader’ - Set in a television studio starring Anna Torv
‘Secret City’ - Political conspiracy (also with Anna Torv)
‘The Heart Guy’ - A top surgeon forced to return to work in his small home town. Stars the gorgeous Rodger Corser. a.k.a. ‘Doctor Doctor’
‘McLeod’s Daughters’ - Life, Trials, Romance; set on a ranch inherited by two half-sister with differing ideas of what they want to do with it - run v. sell. My husband actually rather enjoyed this too.
‘Wanted’ - Exciting drama about two young ladies (strangers) who witness a murder whilst waiting for a bus. They then have to go on the run to escape the murderers and a corrupt senior policeman.
‘Darby & Joan’ - Just been on television. Starring the fabulous Greta Saachi and Bryan Brown. Man dies in Australia when he’s supposed to be on business in Spain. Wife goes there to find out why and ‘bumps’ into ex-cop who helps her. Delightful, great scenery and marvellous marvellous acting from the two leads who look like real people (grey hair/not stick-thin).
MY NUMBER ONE …
‘A Place to Call Home’ - set just post-war and very atmospheric. An Austalian nurse returning by sea to Australia after working in Europe meets the wealthy Bligh family on board where she sees a family secret. She ends up working in the Cottage Hospital in ‘their town’ where she falls in love with the son and gains the hatred of the family matriarch (the fantastic Noni Hazlehurst) because they are the only two who knows the ‘family secret’. Amazing series that I’ve watched three times over the years and know that I will watch yet again.
WHAT I’M WATCHING NOW …
‘City Homicide’ - Police series set in Melbourne. From 2006-2011. Very exciting. Very dramatic. Can be rather gritty at times. Stars Nadine Gardner from ‘The Doctor Blake Mysteries’ fame and also Noni Hazlehurst from ‘A Place to Call Home’.
I like to watch an episode of something in bed on my iPad late at night (whilst my husband and son watches some man-thing downstairs - at present ‘Road House’ which definitely isn’t for me! This is my present bedtime fix. 84 episodes over 5-series. I’m on Episode 24 so quite a few happy watching hours still ahead of me!
I hope that this isn’t too boring/long a comment but I feel that it could introduce some Austalian Television virgins to series that might interest them and occupy a lonesome hour or two.
By the way, I’m not Australian - and haven’t ever been there!!
P.S. a newish Australian film to finish off with that we watched a couple of weeks ago on AmazonPrime….. ‘Palm Beach’ starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Richard E Grant. Reunion at the Palm Beach Sydney home of the ex-manager of a rock-band to celebrate his 70th birthday with the players of the band and their families. Very lovely Sunday afternoon film.
