Another 4 nighter, starting tonight on Channel 5, 9pm.

Looks promising from the trailers, but….

Starring Jill Halfpenny, who also starred in ‘The Drowning’ and ‘The Holiday’, both previous channel 5 (I think) 4 nighters, both equally awful.

Not forgetting the recent ‘Love Rat’, but cannot blame Jill for that one.

Well, we live in hope for this week’s offering.

I decided not to watch it as the theme of lodger breaking up a family seemed a bit trite - sounds like I made the right decision from what you are saying.

Nannan2 Wed 10-Apr-24 12:16:38

She did crash in the long driveway- but she had already let her drive home before that.

Nannan2 Wed 10-Apr-24 12:15:07

Normally all 3 of those are good in other dramas- i remember Jill H from way back in the original waterloo road and Lee Ingleby was in a detective thing as a 'sidekick'. (cant remember which now?) Claire Goose was on either casualty or Holby City i think.?And all 3 in other stuff over the years. As some have said, i think its channel5 scriptwriters at fault.

It's a bit silly but we started to watch so we'll finish!

I thought Alice crashed the car in their driveway but I'm well aware I might be wrong!

Nannan2 Wed 10-Apr-24 12:02:50

Calendargirl- i know, right? I'd never have let my own kids have been driving any car at that age, on the public roads especially. As her actual mum you just would not do it!

Nannan2 Wed 10-Apr-24 11:52:37

Thought at first (by way the husband was speaking to her) that maybe she was the woman he'd had affair with? But i watched 2 episodes together & it became clear it was Alice she wanted. Its all a bit strange though.Maybe she will try for hubby AND child and nudge the wife out - hence the cuckoo (in the nest?)I'ts all a bit odd..But i've started now so ill watch the rest & see outcome.I think 'Clocking off' used to be on a few years ago Chestnut?

Allsaints55 Wed 10-Apr-24 11:50:37

He’s not very attractive to be having affairs 🤭

Suzey Wed 10-Apr-24 11:38:01

These dramas are getting ridiculous

knspol Wed 10-Apr-24 11:35:26

Watched first episode but won't be watching anymore, far too many totally unlikely events and then the threat to the husband found it so annoying.

Shez1955 Wed 10-Apr-24 11:26:00

It’s ok as nothing else on to watch. Better on C5 catch up as no long ad breaks. Going to try Clocking Off previously recommended.

They must need the money BlueBelle.

Probably look at the script and think “Oh well, it will pay for a new kitchen….”

Most actors are looking for the next job and also fill in with voice overs, writing and anything else they can find.

Channel 5 are keeping these actors employed and that can only be a good thing. I'm happy they are making these drama series and I hope they continue. But the level of criticism thrown at them means this is unlikely.

RunaroundSue Wed 10-Apr-24 08:05:16

I have just watched the first episode and I sussed it out from the moment the lodger met the daughter of the couple. I knew immediately she was the girl's mother.

Oh dear I like all the actors in it but don’t they realise the story is such crap So so far fetched and unlikely ……would you know how to tamper with a shower, would you know a combination number of a hidden safe
I like dramas that COULD happen none of this could it’s daft and I m surprised that well known long term actors are so
unpicky about the stories they act in

Chestnut Wed 10-Apr-24 00:05:46

It's fun picking holes in the plot but I still think Channel 5 should be applauded for commissioning so many drama series. They just need some good writers.

Calendargirl Tue 09-Apr-24 21:44:12

Forgot about letting her drive the car on a public road!

shock

Calendargirl Tue 09-Apr-24 21:30:13

Gets dafter.

Breaking into the safe while Jess is in the shower! Obv not worried she’ll just have a really quick one and catch her.

How many schools ring a landline? Not a mobile?

Does Jess not question why the lodger collected the daughter from school, and then she was the one looking after her after the shower incident?

All this in the first half hour.

mrshat Tue 09-Apr-24 19:55:55

Watched it through to the end last night but we decided not to continue - too far fetched to say the least!

petra Tue 09-Apr-24 19:05:45

Traces is very good. On iplayer.

oh dear
Channel 5 The Cuckoo under fire after divisive debut as fans threaten to turn off 'dull' and 'predictable' drama

The broadcaster left some viewers disappointed once again with its latest drama series offering

not just gransnet viewers then.

HowVeryDareYou2 Tue 09-Apr-24 15:47:39

I watched it for 20 minutes, thought it was rather daft.

BigBertha1 Tue 09-Apr-24 14:59:04

Annoying load of rubbish. I don't like Gill Halfpenny anyway- she just plays herself. Claire Goose is a much better actress but there is nothing much else on and at that time of night im ready for bed anyway.

Chestnut Tue 09-Apr-24 14:15:45

You can't fault the actors, they are doing a stirling job. It's the plots which are always lacking in these Ch5 dramas because they are never realistic and have too many holes. Still, as long as there are no serial killers or grisly murders I'm not complaining.

Purplepixie Tue 09-Apr-24 11:17:29

What a load of tripe!

Calendargirl Tue 09-Apr-24 11:14:03

The £3000 was her ‘deposit’. For what? Her first month’s lodge money? I would be expecting a mini suite for that amount, including a kitchenette and my own telly.

And if I were a genuine person looking to rent a room, it would certainly put me off if I thought my prospective landlord/ landlady owed money to tradespeople, and had their wives coming round to chase up monies that had been owing for a while.

Yes, I know, it’s only a story!

(And does she always sleep in her clothes?)
