Just wondered if anyone else had watched Baby Reindeer on Netflix? We decided to give it a go - hadn't seen or heard anything about it, and I have to say it's a very powerful and moving piece of television, although not an easy watch. Deserves all the awards...

Baby Reindeer , an absolutely watchable yet horrendous series . As you watch you can see how Richard Gadd ( the writer, actor & person this happened to ) was somewhat drawn into Martha’s world .
She obviously needs help and he is very brave to of put his story out there . What a drama , which as others have said deserves many awards . We binged it btw

I’ve just finished the final episode. Very dark especially as based on the writer/actors life experience. An excellent series, good dialogue and very good actors.
Episode 4 and the final episode were disturbing and really showed how the main character’s vulnerabilities drew him to the male abuser as well as the stalker

To the Poster who said ' Bring Back Tenko " are you mad ? Tenko was such a harrowing watch with torture and starvation ... doh ...

Yes - watched all episodes back to back -

I renewed my Netflix sub to watch Ripley (which was was excellent) and so was this. Another binge watch.

I must admit that by episode three I was starting to wonder where it was going but the harrowing fourth episode puts it all into context.

The story is about so much more than stalking - how our own life experiences can influence how we respond to people who may be capable of becoming overly-attached and why.

Jessica Gunning is superb as Martha. I remember her in the UK version of Law & Order.

That fourth episode stays with you doesn’t it
The final episode also chilling

Suzique.....Thank You. The point I was making is that in my opinion Tenko was a well made and interesting drama. I don't recall extensive use of swearing or content of a sexual and disturbing nature. Things were alluded to. Of course, it was a terrible dark time.

Yes disturbing to watch but made me consider how complex humans are and how abuse can affect people in so many different ways. What really worries me is that my 17 year old grandson recommended the series and I am now wondering why. At his age I knew nothing of these things and now am wondering how to approach this with him.

Try not to worry about your grandson recommending this Grandma2313. Young people know so
Much more than previous generations. Chat with him

I tried to watch but found the woman so irritating I had to switch off. I also found it so improbable that any sane man would entertain such a woman, even as a friend.

After reading these comments I’ll grit my teeth and give it another go.

I read a couple of pages on the mumsnet discussion. The rapist and the stalker both identified online (not on mumsnet)
Interesting discussion with many posters expressing concern about the programme exposing the female stalker’s identity, despite the author saying she’s unrecognisable. Posters concerned for the woman who has mh problems.
I agreed with the conclusion, the author isn’t a sympathetic character

It is concerning, Iam64. Why can't people just watch something without feeling that they have to delve deeper into it, especially something which is based on a true story. Stalking a stalker...hmmm
And while some people don't have much in the way of sympathy for the main character, trauma bonding is a real thing and much misunderstood.

Urmstongran Sat 27-Apr-24 12:24:32

There’s even speculation his stalker was actually male. Just written as female to further disguise in the story. Even the talk about being premenstrual etc. was subterfuge.

Urmstongran Sat 27-Apr-24 12:27:18

I found it gripping, absorbing and thought provoking. The protagonist himself had many ‘issues’ of his own to work through. “Like attracts like” comes to mind. Needy people latching onto one another each searching for their own life belt.

vegansrock Sat 27-Apr-24 12:30:49

I found the trans woman interesting and wondered why the author hooked up with her - obviously confusion about his own sexuality. The final scene was thought proving - needs a follow up.

Iam64 Sat 27-Apr-24 12:58:05

The vegansrock, he made the confusion about his sexuality clear, especially in a scene with his parents.

Trauma bonding and his own vulnerabilities demonstrated. I’d be concerned if there is a ‘follow up’ vegans. It’s autobiographical and from what I’ve read, all to easy to identify the main protagonists

Its on my list to watch but just not yet.

When Tenko was made we didn't swear. Euphemisms such as fudge or sugar were used instead. Not sure why because everyone knew what they meant.

A brilliant piece of work IMO although a difficult watch. My DH and I, whilst watching it, kept saying "why is he doing that?" or "why is he so stupid". We watched it in two sittings, sometimes hard to watch.

Iam64 Sat 27-Apr-24 13:25:40

It is a tough watch and like you Dinahmo I watched in two sittings. Shouting nooo don’t do that occasionally

merlotgran Sun 28-Apr-24 19:30:31

I’m just about to watch episode 4.

Iam64 Sun 28-Apr-24 20:13:32

Good luck with that merlot

Iam64 Sun 28-Apr-24 20:26:31

I’ll be interested in your views Merlot

merlotgran Sun 28-Apr-24 21:12:12

I have one episode left but I’m taking a break!

It’s disturbing but addictive watching somebody unravel as a result of an act of kindness but he was never going to cope with Martha’s destructive obsessions.

It’s hard to believe this is a true story.

Grammaretto Sun 28-Apr-24 21:52:37

I began to watch it. Not sure how much I have seen but it isn't for me. I know these people exist and awful things happen but I would prefer not to watch.
