Bargain Hunt

Some of the participants are dreadful and it seems to me they are always trying to bargain down prices at the expense of some stall holders who look pretty poor themselves. A couple of women I was watching today actually made me cringe and even their ‘expert’ seemed appalled by them. Some are good and bargain in a reasonable way but couldn’t they cull these dreadful greed buckets- it is quite obvious what they are from the start.

Any item is only worth what someone else is willing to pay, that person has to be at that auction, in fact it takes at least 2 to bid the price up.
We are avid Bargain Hunt watchers, guessing how much an item makes

God, is it still on 😱

SueEH Sat 04-May-24 13:15:57

Dreadful programme. My mother watched it infinitum and put me off for life.

Sometimes I catch the end as I turn on for the news.

Seeing one of the teams excited at 'winning' because they lost less money than the other team is just plain daft.

We watch it but so many repeated programmes. Im amazed at some of the rubbish which sells.

Occassionally watch any of them if I happen to be in and it’s raining I like The Bidding room best and Flog it the others are all ok but pretty samey

I still enjoy it especially when it’s a new episode, lunch just wouldn’t be the same without it

I stopped watching these programmes a while ago. I am not interested in antiques, being one myself is enough.

I’m just fed up with the continual repeated repeats and the silly, giggling contestants who have absolutely no knowledge ….. which is what the program is supposed to be about. It’s time has come!

Its time came 10 years ago.

I stopped watching when they started sending the contestants after specific items, "something over £75", "something military", "something scientific". It was far more entertaining when they just went off and bought whatever hideous thing took their fancy.

Curtaintwitcher Sun 05-May-24 06:45:39

I have stopped watching this programme as it has changed so much. The contestants are treated like children and the 'experts' think they are the stars of the show.

BigBertha1 Sun 05-May-24 07:30:41

We record it and watch while we have lunch if we are at home. It helps to take a proper break during the day. Clearly things are not as we see them and I have never heard anyone speak about their experiences in the programme so do they sign a silencing agreement? Much of it is pre planned I think especially the surprise at which expert pops out. Why do they never pay the dealer or take the item with them? I do agree that some contestants are extremely rude when they bargain, barking out a figure. I shall probably continue to watch DH enjoys it. Now Flog it is boring. Episodes are repeated so many times and the sales are not worth paying the commission.

I stopped watching it after I read that Runners are sent to the stalls in advance, they choose the items and agree a price before the ‘expert’ and the contestants go and pretend to haggle.

After I read that I couldn’t be bothered to watch the fake haggling. The only bit that’s real is the auction at the end.

BrandyGran Sun 05-May-24 10:08:35

Can’t stand the woman with the weird haircut on The Bidding Room(short on one side and long on the other. ) - I feel like teaching for the scissors! Her laugh is so annoying too. They have so little knowledge about real antiques it’s embarrassing.

BrandyGran Sun 05-May-24 10:09:13

Reaching not teaching!

lemsip Sun 05-May-24 10:48:25

this used to be a good watch, trouble is that when a show is a success they make more and change everything about it, when we liked it as it was.. it is so much hyped up that is a 'not' watch now same as many other hyped up shows.

Skydancer Sun 05-May-24 10:59:51

suelld you are absolutely right - this is exactly what I have always thought. The programme is totally backwards. Most of these stallholders will have bought at auction and added on a profit margin. I am starting to get fed up with the silliness of the programme. The thing that irritates me the most is when the teams shout and scream when the bidders in the room can hear them. Very childish.

Catterygirl Sun 05-May-24 20:52:30

I am retired and have an eBay shop just to make sure our only son gets the proceeds. We have years of “stuff” to get rid of.

What irritates me the most is the ridiculous prices the dealers ask for boring stuff and the contestants have no hope at the auction.
I realise that my view is different from most.

mabon1 Sun 05-May-24 21:02:33

I had two friends (now deceased) who were antiques dealer, they told me never pay the asking price ask for at least 20% discount. Works. Don't assume that people who do not look well turned but are poor. You can't tell a book by it's cover, ever!

DrWatson Mon 06-May-24 05:36:57

Look, it's a daytime Game Show, they call it Light Entertainment, and it is indeed, very light. With the right experts, it's not too bad, but I only see it about once a month. The contestants? Told to be fun and lively I believe.

It's not Shakespeare, Chekhov or ballet, so if you want something more serious, try Radio 4?

Gundy Mon 06-May-24 13:33:35

GREED! That’s all it is. They have no respect for others that are just trying to eke out a living for themselves. I hope some of these sellers just tell them “No” and to “move” along.

And you know what? It’s always the Rich 🤑 Bit—‘s that do this. They have no taste or class. It’s a sport for them, looking down on poorer folks.

I’m a hefty tipper and don’t often bargain. Give others a chance.

Coolbreeze Wed 08-May-24 06:21:33

It’s always the female contestants that have the silly shouts and screams, particularly the younger set , but , when there are male contestants on its far more quiet , sensible and logical, a much more enjoyable watch .
When going to a fare there is always bartering and haggling, it’s the fun of shopping at these places .

Curtaintwitcher Wed 08-May-24 06:27:55

Quiet, sensible and logical....yes, Coolbreeze, that's my kind of programme. I hate to see people make fools of themselves, but it seems some people will do anything to appear on tv.

Katie59 Wed 08-May-24 06:43:27

We are avid watchers pitting our value of objects against the contestants, even the auctioneers.
We did actually buy antiques in the last and most are worth less now and it’s very difficult to predict value, generally if it’s old and useful it makes more, sometimes a rare collectible makes a lot.

It’s nice lunchtime fun, the women are more excitable but that’s pretty normal and I’m sure the directors encourage it
