Having just watched the first semi finals of Eurovision I was shocked at how it has changed. Once a competition to find the best song it now seems that the musical composition is irrelevant and the main focus is on the sometimes hideous and overtly erotic performances by the so called artists wearing very little.. Time to call it a day as I fail to see how it can be taken seriously.

This evening’s semi final had some good singers and performances in it. Much more entertaining and less ‘samey’ than the first semifinal.

If that's your take on itChestnut I hope you enjoy it, but it is not mine.
I was not offended by the dancing I saw, and neither were most posters on mumsnet, I guess it is personnel choice whatever your take on it is. People will watch and enjoy it or they won't.

Watch this stuff all the time and you get used to expecting nothing better. As for mums net, says it all really. Enjoy the exhibitionism.

Enjoy the exhibitionism.

Exhibitionism is exactly what it is!

... and after the first few performances, the sameness of it all becomes rather tedious.

rafichagran I like Olly Alexander’s song. The accompanying performance on the main show is due to be a ^technical masterpiece^

What, they'll stick their head down the toilet and grind each other's genitals at the same time?

If some of you think Olly Alexander’s performance is pornoghraphic, please do not watch any exerts from the recent Madonna concerts, they are definitely porn…

The contest has moved on I love the dancing, singing and the glitz.
I looked on the Mumsnet thread and they love Ollie Alexander. I think it is because they are a younger demographic.
I shall be watching and I will enjoy it, my partner does not like it though.

I agree with the OP.......it is more like the Eurovision Performance Contest than the Eurovision Song Contest...........and I won't be watching.

However, that is to be expected from Madonna - this is mainstream TV.

Perhaps it doesn't matter if boundaries are gradually crossed, I don't honestly know, but I do wonder if the 'sexualisation' (can't think of any other way to describe it) of such a huge musical event is anything more than a total indulgence-fest for narcissists and exhibitionists.

... and I don't think I can listen to one more song intro in a minor key with an auto-tuned voice becoming a shriek when it hits the inevitable key-change...

Madonna has been fully satanic for some years. I wouldn't want to see her depravity. The world seems to be heading to a very dark place and these acts are showing us the way there.

Smileless2012 Thu 09-May-24 11:51:11

Possibly what's expected from Madonna GrannyGravy but Eurovision!!!

This used to be a family evening...we all had scorecards and lots of popcorn...now its crude/rude/satanic/scary and not at all child friendly!! Cannot understand how the UK act is popular as it was just very pervy ..awful and Ireland, where do I begin?

Witzend Thu 09-May-24 11:25:33

RosiesMaw

This sums it up for me

Me too!
I do have fond memories of Sandie Shaw winning it in 60-whatever-it-was though!

Smileless2012 Thu 09-May-24 11:16:45

It's a no from me and last week, prompted by an interview with Michael Flatley, I watched that amazing performance of 'River Dance' that brought the house down in 1994.

Those were the days when it was worth watching and people knew how to dance Chestnut.

Chestnut Thu 09-May-24 11:12:40

Ireland is satanic and UK is pornographic, not seen any others yet. Just horrible to watch, really sickening. I guess whether you find this acceptable comes down to what you're used to seeing. Constant exposure to this stuff can affect you, maybe without you knowing.

What I hate is the so called 'dancing' we see now. It's either aggressive leaping around as if they're fighting, or sexually explicit moves which are pornographic. Whatever happened to actual dancing?

Parsley3 Thu 09-May-24 10:50:13

I have just watched the video and I am afraid I couldn't concentrate on the song, catchy chorus by the way, for puzzling why Ollie's mum let him out the door without darning the holes in his vest. It's not a bad song but historians may not approve of the cod piece that channels Henry VIII being put in a public toilet setting. But finally, should gay men be stereotyped like this? That really is my objection to the staging of this song.

I watched bits of it last night and caught Ollie Alexander’s performance.

Id love to know what Terry Wogan would have made of it. 🤔😂

I was only two in 1959, I remember years ago when talking about Eurovision in the office a older member of staff said when it was on her husband had to leave the room as it made him cringe. Different times.

Dickens Thu 09-May-24 10:22:00

Well judging by our entry, it certainly is Eurovision - with the accent on vision.

To me it sounds formulaic - the usual whiney, slow-start, and then the bump, bump, bump 'chorus', coupled with the now obligatory writhing and grinding.

I think Eurovision needs to re-invent itself.

OldFrill Thu 09-May-24 08:55:40

Think it's a great song and production, rather retro maybe. For those saying we never get voted for, didn't we come second in 2022, he was excellent and had a huge international online following.

merlotgran Thu 09-May-24 08:29:33

Things have moved on since the first Eurovision when somebody sang sing littke birdie.

Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnston. Those were the days! 😂🥳

rafichagran Thu 09-May-24 05:40:50

Well I love Ollie Alexander, he is a good actor and l have seen him singing other things and he really has talent. Whethertommorow you might be in a minority here but other people love it, and the news channels are saying the British act is very popular, although it probably won't be with the judges due to political voting.
I think there are other things to be concerned about other than Ollie, like the big Police presence, and security, because Israel has a entrant and there is talk of demonstrations.
I would also not be worried about my Grandchildren who are 19, 11 and 5. The eldest will be out, the middle one is not interested and the youngest will be where she should be, in bed.

I think you re in a BIG minority in loving it whethertomorrow
You like porn on the TV for our kids to watch then do you ?
You think this chap is a good role model for our youngsters ?
You think this is what we want to be known for in the world ?
Nul points I do believe

Freya5 Thu 09-May-24 04:37:11

Whethertomorrow

I love it!

You do have to wade through some peculiar songs to get some good ones. France 1991 was good and I still listen to it now.

Sex seems to have really intruded this year though and will no doubt continue to ruin the music.

As for Ireland’s entry it wasn’t music it was screeching.

Still no one gets hurt by watching it, and if you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

I don't.
