Having just watched the first semi finals of Eurovision I was shocked at how it has changed. Once a competition to find the best song it now seems that the musical composition is irrelevant and the main focus is on the sometimes hideous and overtly erotic performances by the so called artists wearing very little.. Time to call it a day as I fail to see how it can be taken seriously.

He was already chosen by December 2023, and there seems to be no evidence that anyone chose him other than the BBC. Does anyone know differently?

Did they do a series of programmes with the chance to vote for your favourite each week, or something?
I'm sure that's what my neighbour said.

What I'd like to know is who actually chose Ollie Alexander to represent us with that song? He announced that he was going to represent the UK in December 2023 during the final of Strictly Come Dancing. That is much earlier than usual. But it seems unclear how or when he was actually chosen, or by who. Only that he was chosen by the BBC. Does anyone know any more about this?

It's supposed to be chosen by a national vote.

That must have passed me by as I don't remember a programme about it.

I don’t remember anything about voting.
Hopefully the BBC has learned its lesson by having a public vote if they chose OA.
It needs a panel who know a thing or two about music to choose a candidate next time.

I've just found the perfect Eurovision entry for the UK. It has catchy lyrics and a catchy tune. We might have won with this.......if only.

Yes, I only watched 3 songs , switching off when I saw the Olly Alexander (?) one . It disgusted me ! Quite like the song though , I heard it on the radio today .

I don't care if they're on a journey, searching for themselves, whatever their sexual orientation, I just want to hear new, good songs sung well.

Prepare yourself for disappointment Calli because you’ll never hear new, good songs sung well on Eurovision again.

Oh I have a terrible, terrible voice.
It's like Kathy Burke ordinarily, but the autoimmune condition has affected my voice so now it's old and spindly combined with Kathy.

Calli, Pas de quoi!

I'll bet nobody could sing any of the Eurovision songs in 6 months time.

I can’t even sing them the following morning.

I can't sing full stop 😂
Well, I could but you wouldn't recognise the song.

How I wish I had a lovely singing voice

I lost interest once I knew who was going to win.
He was just awful, I think, and so was his skirt.

"And so was his skirt." There's something quite pythonesque about that comment MissAdventure and it's made me giggle.

MissAdventure Tue 14-May-24 21:51:04

Ah, well that's me wrong.
I'm glad someone enjoys them long term.
I've not liked any of them instantly, ever.
My liking them is like the kiss of death, anyway. smile

I quite often play songs from previous Eurovisions that I’ve really liked. There was a Norwegian one from a few years ago that I loved. I don’t think they have to be as instantly likeable these days as people listen to the songs on the internet for ages before the contest.

Well I just checked out the winning song properly and can't make sense of it, a load of strange words against a tuneless background. I always think if any song were sung in a room with a piano what would it sound like, would there be a song there or just a load of nonsense?

I really am struggling to understand modern music at all. There never seems to be a recognisable tune or understandable words. Lyrics seem to be full of anger or hate and they are always about me, me, me. Never expressing love for another person, or what can I do for that person. It's always me and my anguish.

Our parents used to say the same thing about the Beatles and the Stones.Their music has survived for 60 odd years.

MissAdventure Tue 14-May-24 12:51:28

So do I.
