We first went to Union Hall nearly 40 years ago - but 30 years ago was when it really became important in my children's minds.

Castletownsend was on our wiggly-route to Castletownbearhaven via Skib..
... but Union Hall always makes me think of mushroom soup because I have "never made mushroom soup as delicious as Union Hall" according to my now adult children.
"Not quite Union Hall quality" grin

My heart is in West Cork.

@NotSpaghetti. Union Hall - Correct! Have you been there?

“War of the Buttons” was the lovely film you’re thinking of and my son went to that Primary school. 😁

I’m guessing maybe you’ll know Castletownsend then…? 😂

Hope you enjoy Bodkin. The story improves a bit in later episodes.

Back to recommendations…. My all time favourite comedy series was Still Game which has more than 10 series and is available to watch on Netflix and centres around a small group of pensioners living in a less salubrious area of Glasgow. However, it’s not for those of a sensitive disposition due to the swearing, but it’s very clever and I’ve re-watched every episode numerous times.

Barbadosbelle, I also enjoyed A Place to Call Home abd was annoyed that the last episodes were extra payments- but have tried tonight with McLeod's Daughters and unfortunately found the acting very stiff so didn't take to it. Only watched the very first episode though so may possibly return to it in future.. thank you though - and for so many other ideas.

Rabit Hole sounded interesting when i looked it up but it seens to involve paying for it (even though we have subscriptions) so we have put that to one side for now Elz57

Annsixty and others- so many of you suggested Red Eye that I tried that and swiftly discovered I'd already watched it! grin I'm pretty bad with names/titles and even stars!

... so I'm currently watching Bodkin Skullduggery which looks to me to be set in Unionhall - where Lord of the Buttons was made.

Thank you all again. I'm grateful for so many great ideas.

The Morning Show with Jennifer Anniston and Reese Witherspoon. Just started the second series it’s brilliant and completely addictive ( in a good way)

NotSpaghetti ......

I have watched 'A Place to Call Home' four times over the past decade. It's probably the best series I've ever seen and I rewatch about every three years. However, I was annoyed after watching the first two series recently on Amazon that the other series (4-6) were only available if I purchased them - at a cost of over £50!!

But there are other great series that I can recommend on AmazonP ........

# McLeod's Daughters (Australian)
(My husband enjoyed this too). Two
half-sisters inherit the family ranch
after the death of their father, but
one is a townie. Great scenery and
storylines.
Eight series

# City Homicide (Australian
Fast paced with great acting and.
cases.
(Five series)

# Street Legal (Canadian)
Follows one case about the promotion
and over-subscribing of opiods. Very
interesting and a very good cast.
(Just one series - know not why)

# Bosch/Bosch Legacy - Fantastic cop
series from Michael Connolly's books.

The first two are a decade or so old but like APTCH it doesn't matter. The last two are recent.

I watch an episode of something in bed on my ipad each night whilst my chap finishes the evening watching men's things downstairs - at the moment it's The Gentleman (not for me!!).

Slow Horses on Apple TV. Brilliant and very funny. Gary Oldman is excellent

We just finished watching A Small Light on Disney+. It tells the story of Miep Gies, the young lady who helped Ann Frank's family hide in Amsterdam during the war. It was a brilliant series and kept you on the edge of your seat throughout. Obviously we all know what happened ultimately, but it's a story of courage and optimism despite all the horrible things happening.

I loved this and know hardly anyone who watched it

meddijess Thu 16-May-24 13:45:39

For All Mankind on Apple TV. We are completely hooked on this series. Can't wait for Season 5!

humptydumpty Thu 16-May-24 13:40:12

Succession is great, just sorry it's over!

You could try Red Rose and Baby Reindeer (Netflix)

NoraBatty Thu 16-May-24 12:56:44

Has any watched Succession? It seemed to pass me by. Is it worth watching? (I like a drama/who done it, but not into heavy violence/torture etc.)

Labadi0747 Thu 16-May-24 12:33:50

Marcella now on Netflix. Excellent. Not many people seem to know it now
Who is Erin Carter Netflix👍
A place to call Home

TanaMa Thu 16-May-24 12:24:02

I have been watching Red Eye and am amazed at what must be a HUGE aircraft!! Upstairs, downstairs, storage space for multiple dead bodies, people constantly walking through, what seems to be, numerous cabins!!

Susieq62 Thu 16-May-24 12:14:59

Blue Lights
Traces
Peaky Blinders

jerseygirl Thu 16-May-24 12:14:55
