Has anybody seen this? I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Imarocker Sun 19-May-24 20:37:22

Really enjoying it. I loved the book and am hoping they don’t change the end.

Greenfinch Sun 19-May-24 20:40:44

We are watching it on catch up and thought we had got to the end with episode six but see there are two more. It’s quite unusual but we are enjoying it.

Its bitter sweet and melancholic somehow. The set is stunning.

I loved the book but hated this film version. The swoopy camera work, woke casting and, finally, Ewan McGregor wrong for the part.
Glad others liked it but absolutely not for me.

Sadly,my concentration is that of a very small flea these days and I struggle to read a book.

So I came to this fresh.

I read the book as a book club choice a few years ago. I really didn't think I'd enjoy the book but loved it. Half of me didn't want to watch the tv version but so glad I am watching. 2 episodes to go. Don't see the point of the "woke" casting as it's called. They're all Russian characters, so why not let them look like characters of their time. Wasn't sure initially about Ewan M but he's nailed it for me.

I think they did a similar kind of style with Versailles, mixing the old with the new. I loved it actually, interesting idea.

It was the rasta dreadlocked character in an early scene that really irritated me. Anachronistic and out of place. Ruined credibility at a stroke.

Fehinti Balogun? I liked the character and found the rapport between him and the eponymous gentleman to be believable.

Treebee Mon 20-May-24 20:10:08

Like Rosiebee I’d read this with my book group and loved it although I would not have picked it up otherwise.

I thoroughly enjoyed the televised version, thinking it was true to the book. Ewan McGregor fitted the bill, and his wife as Anna was marvellous. The hotel itself was just as I imagined it.

Aveline Mon 20-May-24 20:50:25

Would such a character be in Moscow back then? No.

Aveline Mon 20-May-24 20:57:10

Black actors required to 'bring the story to life'!

zakouma66 Mon 20-May-24 21:01:52

Bingo! There you go, its creative!

GrandmaKT Mon 20-May-24 21:53:45

How ae you all watching this? I'd love to see it, and I do have Amazon Prime, so I could sign up for the Paramount one week free offer and binge watch it. I've only recently signed up to Netflix and now see people recommending things on Apple, Disney, Paramount. Surely you don't all have all the subscription channels?

Greenfinch Mon 20-May-24 22:06:27

We subscribe to Sky and thus got Paramount+ free.

Jane43 Mon 20-May-24 22:21:14

I got Apple TV plus free for 6 months when I got a new iPad, I didn’t renew it but they offered me a special deal for another 6 months which I accepted. We have Amazon Prime because we buy a lot from Amazon and we took up a special offer with Paramount but won’t renew it as there is very little on it we want to watch. We also have Netflix, it sounds a lot but we only have Internet from Virgin which is £25 a month.

Aveline Tue 21-May-24 05:55:08

Zakouma the book is good enough and doesn't need such 'creative' nonsense.

Greyduster Tue 21-May-24 06:59:15

I watched it all and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have no objections to black actors playing any part, but the dreadlocks! Why? They were so totally out of their time that they irritated me every time he appeared, I’m afraid.

Paramount lured me in with one episode " free". Then I signed up.

These woke characterisations are just commercial. It is felt that people of colour will not watch unless they can relate.
The thing is, I can watch shows like eg. No.1 Ladies Detective Agency with complete enjoyment not wanting a white character to relate to.
I am probably a bit of a purist; woke characterisations really put my teeth on edge. What next; Lennie Henry as Cleopatra.

zakouma66 Fri 24-May-24 11:32:44

I think there was a female Richard 111? Didn't it cause controversy?

I didn't like the somewhat clumsy addition of a multicultural cast in The Last Bus ( Timothy Spall) But then again, I didn't enjoy the film so was probably grumpy by the end of it.
