You're thinking of Lord Snooty and His Pals from the Beano. Loved all the comic characters!
Here are his details:

There even seems to be a book about him.

Someone will be along in a moment to say they are his mother.

His grandfather was a lorry driver and car salesman.

I'm wondering if the Rees-Mogg household have a cat, they really ought to if they haven't. I would suggest a male of the species to be called Rhys Mog to distinguish himself from the family name of Rees-Mogg. 🐱 I'm sure he'd be a huge hit with the public.

I like him, much to my son's disgust.

😃

A stately dog, perhaps Terribull?
Dalmatian?
Afghan Hound? (on second thoughts, perhaps not).

He might work the Charlston too you know, Callistemon213

It has always been clear that he is a man with a sense of humour and he has deliberately developed the posh toff persona because it serves him well. It will be interesting to see if this series will show the person behind the facade.

So what if he is rich maebell. The money isn't inherited. He has earned it for himself. He is/was/is a successful financier.

M0nica, he hasn't "developed" a posh persona, he is posh. His father was editor of the Times newspaper and a life peer. JRM attended Eton and had a thoroughly posh upbringing in a thoroughly posh household.

He is very, very far from a self made man. Although it's fair to say he made considerable gains by switching his hedge fund firm to Dublin in 2018. Thus allowing him to capitalise on European investment and circumnavigating the negative affects of Brexit. So you see he won whatever the outcome which some might say was, at best, hypocritical.

Additionally his wife, Helena who is of aristocratic stock is in line to inherit a fortune of £45 million pounds along with stately homes, land and priceless works of art.

One of my neighbours is the female version of Jacob R-M.🤣
Her family are all incredibly well spoken and i tease her because she even swears in a really posh accent. She was brought up with wealth, huge houses, nannies etc.

Primrose53 Sat 13-Jul-24 22:21:52

Jacob’s sister, Annunziata Rees-Mogg is often on GB News and political progs. She is very like him and super intelligent.

I agree with this. I may well watch if it’s on at a convenient time.
The nasty comments on here say more about the writer than JRM.

It is inverted snobbery to condemn him for 'speaking posh' yet defend Angela Rayner when she uses common or coarse language.

I was just thinking that. The very same people who defend any criticism of Angela Rayner find it acceptable to criticise JRM.

You won’t find any criticism of either of these people on any thread from me.
I don’t attack, criticise, or make fun of people because of their social class.
Attack the policies, not the people.

No need to injure one’s eyes with pins; just don’t watch. I like JRM and if I remember I’ll definitely give it a view.

Vintagewhine Sun 14-Jul-24 08:40:32

Tbh I don't care who his parents or his grandparents were, it's his politics that I dislike. He was brought up with considerable wealth and privilege (Westminster prep, Eton and estates in the country etc) so he was extremely fortunate IMO this should give him reasons to be kind and generous to his fellow man. He isn't. He denigrated John Prescott for his accent btw but I just feel sorry for his children, even the Royal family have moderated their accents!

Callistemon213 Sun 14-Jul-24 08:56:28

Tbh I don't care who his parents or his grandparents were

Of course that matters. We should not forget our forebears and why we are what we are.

Have you never heard of his father? Perhaps his father's views, expressed in his book The Sovereign Individual, may have influenced Jacob's views.

M0nica Sun 14-Jul-24 17:23:35

RM's father was editor of the Times for many years and a real mover and shaker behind the political scenes between 1967 - 1981. Callistemon213 mwntions WRM's most influential book, but he wrote several others. The opening line of the The Sovereign Indvidual is a quote from Tom Stoppard’s play Arcadia: ā€œThe future is disorder.ā€ One could say he was prescient.

A Guardian article on JRM, published some years ago has the title 'How to explain Jacob Rees-Mogg? Start with his father's books'

The whole article can be found at www.theguardian.com/books/2018/nov/09/mystic-mogg-jacob-rees-mogg-willam-predicts-brexit-plans it is a fascinating read.

Vintagewhine Sun 14-Jul-24 17:37:12

I'm very well aware of who his father was but it doesn't change my opinion of JRM. Why should it?

You don't like his politics, fair enough.

But you mock his upbringing, the schools he attended, his accent, in fact everything about him.

Posters are castigated for doing the same about Angela Rayner, her lack of education, her accent and her foul utterings.

Why is one acceptable and one not?

Neither should be.
