It is inverted snobbery to condemn him for 'speaking posh' yet defend Angela Rayner when she uses common or coarse language.

I was just thinking that. The very same people who defend any criticism of Angela Rayner find it acceptable to criticise JRM.

You won’t find any criticism of either of these people on any thread from me.
I don’t attack, criticise, or make fun of people because of their social class.
Attack the policies, not the people.

Social class is nonsense anyway. It is just a politically charged way of describing how much money people earn or have.

I knew someone who looked and spoke impeccably with the right upmarket income - and dressed the part. His father was a bricklayer, but he was a salesman and he adapted this persona because he sold to country landowners and their ilk.

Anyone who thinks social class is about accent and clothing clearly isn't a sociologist.

Vintagewhine Sun 14-Jul-24 21:33:47

Actually I haven't mocked him, you have confused my posts with someone else.

I’m going to watch. If I like the first part, I’ll continue to watch. It will probably be better than so much of what’s on TV at the moment.

I doubt many members of the population are qualified sociologists.

Also 'normal for Norfolk " ....reality show about the life of an eccentric gentleman farmer and his family... I really enjoyed that

But that is exactly what I am saying. Social class is an absolute nonsense. The only thing that differentiates one person from another is how much money they have and how they choose to spend it.

No it's not though. Social class permeates society still and it's really not about accent and clothes, they can be changed very easily. We may have a more meritocratic society than we did but the process of stratification via education, family and employment etc is still evident in the UK. Less than it was but it's still there.

I totally agree with you.

Stratification in society is there, will always be there, and is present in every country and human society, it just isn't based on some old fashioned notions of class. It is only based on money. Those with lots of money tend to spend it on different things to those who have much less, those with lots of money will buy themselves opportunities that others do not have, so has the world been sine the year dot, but it is money, money, money that enables this, not class.

When I studied social class as part of my sociology course, it was said that what defines social class is education, profession, and attitudes/views. So a vicar is poorly paid but is middle class. A market trader maybe well off financially but is working class. I’m aware that since I studied sociology the bands have widened considerably and so have the definitions, but social class is still very much with us. That’s why Angela Rayner is not considered to be middle class by some, although by definition as an elected politician she is middle class, but because her attitudes have not appeared to change with her some people think her not middle class.

M0nica Mon 15-Jul-24 11:20:52

Nowadays, people are so various the connection between education, profession and attitudes/views has completely gone. most well eductaed young people have left wing politics. You are more likely to see tem ata taylor Swift concert than at the opera, and they probably are not house owners.

This is why using social class as a delinieator is so retrogade these days. Angela Rayner isn't any class. She is simply a woman earning a high salary to spend as she wills.

I don't know the exact percentage of British children who went to Eton, but those who did were somewhat (!) over represented in the previous cabinet.
The new cabinet seems to be managing without them.

maddyone Mon 15-Jul-24 18:34:37

You obviously have your views Monica but I prefer to understand social class in a very different way than you, in fact in the way I was taught. Government also take a different view when analysing facts and figures.

You mean Desmond McCarthy. I know him.

That was a lovely series.

A crew was seen filming when the family attended a church service in Somerset, and they have also been seen while Rees-Mogg was out and about canvassing.

So far, an air date has not been announced, but the Rees-Moggs will be hitting the small screen some time this year. The programme will be on Discovery+.
