Who watched this last night on Channel 5?

Second part tonight.

Must admit my eyes closed the last 20 minutes or so, will have to re-watch that bit.

Wish it had been 8.00-9.30 instead of 9.00-10.30.

Thought it seemed reasonably ‘balanced’.

You chaps really do hate these two people who you have never met!

You got the first two wrong (“chaps”and “hate”) but are spot on with the last bit - and wouldn’t wish to either!

Oh dear, there’s a bit of American knocking going on, with stereotypical comments about their smiles, and “customs”. Such a shame, and rather unpleasant.

Pippa000 Sun 18-Aug-24 14:12:21

I understood that the title Prince can be removed, by the present monarch, as it is the "gift" of the monarch, the Queen at the time of Harry's birth, as to which children are given the title Prince of Princess, but the Dukedom can only be removed by actor parliament. Although I stand to be corrected.

Chestnut, referring to your remarking on Meghan's unfaltering smile, I now recall that part of the popularity of successful royalty such as Princess Anne and the late Queen and even Princess Margaret is their ability to look serious and sober.
Is perpetual grinning an American custom?

I think perpetual grinning must indeed be an American custom. You only have to look at Kamala Harris, she has the same fake smile plastered across her face all the time. I really hate to see people grinning like that. Just look sincere!

Chestnut Sun 18-Aug-24 14:03:42

eazybee at the time the early series of The Crown were made the late Queen and Prince Philip, and many others were alive, and I thought they were intrusive then, and still do.
I didn't think Series 1 and 2 were disrespectful and as they covered 1947 to 1964 that is 60-77 years ago. The passage of time does make a difference. I was shocked and horrified they later did everything up to and including Diana's car crash and feel the same as you. Then it carried on until Charles and Camilla's wedding in 2005 (less than 20 years ago). It is immoral and intrusive and I would not even consider watching it. Including the present King, Queen and William in a drama series is totally wrong. Netflix are not a good company, especially after paying H&M such huge amounts for their whinging nonsense.

Calendargirl Sun 18-Aug-24 13:00:17

Meghan disliked Trump didn’t she?

Remember he was asked before their wedding if he had received an invitation.

“Not that I’m aware of” he replied.

The reporter then made some comment, to which Trump said he wished them good luck, adding ,with a grin, “I think Harry’s gonna need it!”.

Well said, Donald! How right you were.

Caleo Sun 18-Aug-24 12:22:44

David I agree. It's pretty bad. However I like the King that he still loves his son despite all that.

David:
"I wouldn’t watch it on principle"

What principle?

Them making money out of trying to humiliate other family members, they didn’t get on, that’s OK go and do your own thing, but to make millions broadcasting your side of the story is the lowest betrayal of all.

I don’t like them much!.

The worst case scenario is that Trump/Vance get in the White House because Vance wants to send H&M back to us because of Harry's drug lies. 😱

Exactly. For all Trump's faults he had great respect for our late Queen and might find the prospect of deporting Harry back home an appealing one with a bit of karma added in.

Caleo Sun 18-Aug-24 12:09:14

Eazybee, she'd be only an honorary princess until they divorced though not so? I suspect the personage has to be an HRH before the title if 'Princess ' is durable.

I have never watched any of the programmes about the RF. I am really not interested. fact is so much more interesting than fiction.

eazybee Sun 18-Aug-24 11:47:37

If they remove the title Duke and Duchess, Meghan will become Princess Harry, which will morph into Princess Meghan. No, no, no!

eazybee Sun 18-Aug-24 11:42:22

Tuskanini, I gave my reasons for not watching it earlier on this thread.

mabon1 Sun 18-Aug-24 11:36:37

Well join the club, neither have I. The Duke and Duchess are traitors. Centuries ago they would have been taken down the Thames in a boat, taken to the Tower and maybe beheaded.

Calendargirl Sun 18-Aug-24 11:34:33

Heard on the News this morning that the King is no longer going to pay for Andrew’s security, has been doing so the last 2 years that he hasn’t been a working royal.

Is he now looking at other issues relating to NWR?

I know H&M no longer have paid security here, unless on occasions such as the late Queen’s funeral.

Tuskanini Sun 18-Aug-24 11:33:44

eazybee

Oh, that explains it. Saw a comment in the newspaper that 'The Crown is investigating Harry and Meghan this weekend' and took it to mean there was to be some in-depth investigation of their visits to suspect regimes by the British monarchy.

Never watched 'The Crown' and never will. Tawdry.

How do you know ‘The Crown’ is tawdry if you’ve never watched it? Are you Mary Whitehouse? It’s actually pretty good, especially the earlier seasons. And pretty kind to HM, if that’s what worries you.

M0nica Sun 18-Aug-24 11:31:33

They are fast slipping down the alphabet of celebrity. No longer A Listers, not yet Z listers.

Charleygirl5 Sun 18-Aug-24 11:27:20

I believe Charles and William will be discussing next week whether to remove the Duke and Duchess title from that pair. Unfortunately they cannot remove the word Prince but their children will be stripped of their titles. I would like to see them plain Mr. and Mrs. but that will never happen.

I still have not recovered from hearing an outfit costing £17K was purchased for the Colombia trip.

Anniebach Sun 18-Aug-24 11:16:53

They are totally unaware that they are making themselves look
so foolish

eazybee Sun 18-Aug-24 10:37:16

Sorry Chestnut, but at the time the early series of The Crown were made the late Queen and Prince Philip, and many others were alive, and I thought they were intrusive then, and still do.

I had a friend whose father was chairman of a company which was the subject of a long internal investigation; nothing illegal but an emotive subject at the time. A TV documentary/drama was produced with dramatic interpretations of he and his colleagues and the reasons behind their decisions. Used to being in the public eye, and having given full and undisputed accounts during the course of the public investigation they found the dramatic representations to be inaccurate, much information left out, and the production biased towards making a good story rather than presenting the truth.
ps, not The Post Office.
