I’m watching Sam Smith at the Proms on BBC2. He’s dressed in a red ball gown, complete with a beard and tattoos. 🄓His female co-singer is wearing a black trouser suit. Just about to change channelsā€¦šŸ™„

Sounded good but rather weird to look at to say the least.

I didn’t bother. The Beeb has become too ā€œinclusiveā€ for my taste.

Ziplok Sat 24-Aug-24 22:16:44

Well, I’ve just looked at a picture of him in a beautiful crimson ball gown. Words fail me. What have The Proms come to?

Smileless2012 Sat 24-Aug-24 22:16:52

With that voice, all he needs to do is sing; he was very good.

I changed channels ā€˜toot sweet’ he looked ridiculous, what was all that about! I think he’s gay so is it about supporting trans activists? I don’t think he was very good singing wise either, the rendition of Fever was poor.
Can’t watch nincompoops with beards in ballgowns at the best of times.

Sam Smith and all the musicians who performed tonight were absolutely brilliant!

That is what the proms is about for me.

Many of the composers who we admire today and whose work we see performed at the proms were cutting edge in one way or another in their day.

Oreo Sat 24-Aug-24 22:29:16

Ali23 are you ā€˜aving a laff’?

Oreo Sat 24-Aug-24 22:30:21

Cutting edge isn’t appearing in a ballgown for a male singer.

Smileless2012 Sat 24-Aug-24 22:53:52

I agree that he and the musicians were brilliant Ali but I'm a huge fan and have all his albumssmile.

My daughter knew Sam as a teenager. He's always been a flamboyant dresser. IMO he's a good singer and I enjoyed his performance.

Well said. For me it was all about the music and once I’d muttered, ā€˜Good Grief’ at the sight of the ball gown I settled down to enjoy the second half.

This thread has made me laugh because not one person has called him by his chosen pronoun. You should be calling him 'they' and not 'he'. šŸ˜‚

Of course he has the right to prefer a certain pronoun, just as I have the right to ignore it. I'm afraid I have no respect for anyone who is into Satanism.

I love listening to Sam Smith.

henetha Sun 25-Aug-24 10:53:36

Sam Smith did wear a suit for the first half of the concert, and then, somewhat startlingly, did appear in the red ball gown after the interval. I loved the whole thing, no matter how they were dressed. It was beautiful and somehow didn't seem odd by the end.

merlotgran Sun 25-Aug-24 11:27:13

I don’t remember anyone having a problem with Danny la Rue or Paul o’Grady appearing at the London Palladium wearing ball gowns and before anyone reminds me they were alter egos, it’s still a bloke in a dress!

Ditto Eddie Izzard.

eazybee Sun 25-Aug-24 12:00:17

They didn't appear at the Proms and didn't pretend to be high art; they were entertainers, and very good ones.

I watched the Sottish Symphony Orchestra delivering an exquisite performance of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream, until the National Youth Choir of Scotland, who sang beautifully, began capering about the orchestra pit as somewhat lumpen fairies, occasionally donning asses' ears and delivering chosen lines from the play rather badly.
Why?

eazybee Sun 25-Aug-24 12:00:49

Scottish

rowyn Sun 25-Aug-24 12:05:02

Yes, but this is a bloke with a BEARD in a dress!

TiggyW Sun 25-Aug-24 13:35:30

merlotgran - At least Danny La Rue and Paul O’Grady had the figures for it, and it wasn’t the Proms! Reminded me of Kenny Everett (ā€˜in the best possible taste!ā€™šŸ¤£). Sam Smith is a big bloke, about as unfeminine as you can get! I thought his suit in the first half was very smart. Sir Henry Wood must be turning in his grave.

Indigo8 Sun 25-Aug-24 13:44:57

Whatever next? Perhaps the BBC Symphony Orchestra headlining at Glastonbury in wetsuits.grin

Cannot imagine any of the wonderful composers from the past wearing a dress, Strauss, Tschaikowsky, Handel, Mozart etc etc. Their music is their rememberance, not dressing in a red grown.

JaneJudge Sun 25-Aug-24 13:54:59

maybe they've been eating too many cheeseburgers to pull off a velour jumpsuit

Mollygo Sun 25-Aug-24 14:00:53

Maybe he’s worried his voice isn’t good enough to keep him in the limelight, hence the other attention seeking actions.

I think he’s wrong about his voice, but a jock in a frock isn’t appealing enough to make me watch.

LadyGracie Sun 25-Aug-24 14:06:33

I had to turn him off, his voice is nothing special.
