Sam NEILL And Annette Bening star in this 7 part drama when the Mom goes missing…seems intriguing… anyone else watching.

I’ve just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it, although disappointed with the ending. I searched to see if anyone had watched the film, and from comments here have decided not to bother. Than you. 😊

It was a bit like a chick lit murder mystery. I was tempted to just skip to the last episode but stuck with it as I was crashed out on the sofa with nothing better to do. I wouldn’t’ve paid to watch it.

I think I watched the first two episodes, but it was so awful that I cancelled the rest of the series.
Expected much better of Sam Neil and Annette Bening. What a waste!

So lame! I expected better from a cast headed up by Annette Bening and Sam Neil, not impressive at all.

I wonder if I'm the only person who thinks the actor who played the dark haired son, also in the first series of White Lotus, looks very like Olivia Coleman imo

I spent most of the series thinking the twist would be that Sam Neill was not the father of some or all of the children - every one of them looked so different grin

I am now reading the book. As usual, so much has changed. As others have said, it should be taking place in Australia, not USA.

Brooke was not gay, she was splitting up with her husband.

Joy is described as ‘tiny’, which Annette Benning is not. And Sam Neill is not as tall and muscular as Stan. And all four children look very alike, none of this matches up with what we see on screen.

Apart from that….

I hated it. I thought the acting was diabolical - especially Sam Neil.

Joan made me feel quite uncomfortable, Maybee

I just kept expecting her to get caught or that gangsters would arrive to take their revenge.

MayBee70 Thu 10-Oct-24 21:46:05

I think it’s absolutely awful but am binge watching it. I know I should be binge watching Joan which I believe is much better but it’s a case if I’ve started so I’ll finish.

Finished the series and really enjoyed it.I liked the ‘then’ and ‘now’ aspects and each episode featuring the viewpoint of one family member.Good acting and plot.

Jane, agree, it went backwards and forwards far too often.
It was ok, but I won’t be recommending this one

Jane43 Fri 27-Sept-24 16:57:34

I watched it but the constant back and forth in time irritated me. It was carried by strong performances by Sam Neil and Annette Benning IMO.

Sara1954 Thu 26-Sept-24 15:27:16

It’s getting me through the ironing this afternoon, but I don’t think I’ll finish the series x

I think the casting director who picked the 4 children of Joy and Stan should have got actors who looked as if they were related. They were all so different it was hard to believe they were supposed to be siblings.
I’ve binge watched it and quite enjoyed it, although the ending was a bit ott. But they usually are!

I thought that too.

They were nothing like each other and only one had a resemblance to a parent. Brooke looks rather like her mother Joy.

I have watched three episodes and am struggling. Is it worth carrying on? Does it get better? I find some of the acting poor and I don’t really engage with any of the characters.

Calendargirl Tue 24-Sept-24 21:16:53

I guessed the children’s ages wrong. I thought Amy was the youngest, but she was older than Brooke.

I agree they didn’t resemble siblings at all.

I got a little bit excited when I spotted this as I love Annette Bening super cool. Ohh but how wrong I was, turned it over within 10 mins! Smalzy, pretentious claptrap. Very disappointing, watched Vera instead, much more authentic. confused

The TV drama won't be as good as reading the book, I've no doubt.

Yoginimeisje Tue 24-Sept-24 08:42:15

I've read the book, so am watching. I adore Liane Moriarty, have all her books. I am just finishing '9 perfect strangers' Her stories do start off slow, getting you to know the characters and background, but after the first 2 chapters, cannot put her books down, they are sooo good.

Sara1954 Tue 24-Sept-24 06:33:04

I’ve enjoyed her books, so thought I’d give it a go.
I watched two episodes, but not sure if I’ll carry on with it, it was okay, but didn’t grip me.

All the episodes are available now on iplayer Crossstichfan

Thanks! I’m relieved, as I had a horrible thought that we’d be left hanging!

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 23-Sept-24 17:43:43

Gave up, was boring me, sick of hyped up things which fall flat and time wasting rubbish!

Tallulah52 Mon 23-Sept-24 16:47:25

I think the location was changed because Sam Neil has recently undergone treatment for cancer in Australia. Unfortunately I gave up watching after first episode as apart from Annette Bening & Sam, I thought the acting was quite poor.
