Another favourite series back on.

Thanks, I have it on series record. I have enjoyed watching some much older ones recently, from before I started watching, but this new one is very welcome. I much prefer it to the landscape version.

I wish so many of them didn't rely so much on their I pads. They are basically just copying a photograph, when they could be seeing far more of the structure of the head if they actually looked at the model. I'm getting tired of all the photo realism as well.

About to watch it .
Certainly - one of my favourite programmes .
I enjoy Landscape Artist too .
I'd like to see Still Life Artist Of The Year !
Landscape and still life are my specialisations .

I watched a recording of the first round of artists but unfortunately I hadn't got the last few minutes. Can anyone tell me who went through, please? I thought there were some excellent artists.

It was one of the Saskia Reeves portraits, the one that had, I think, a blob of orange on it. I really liked it. I thought the pencil drawing of Hannah Waddington ( sp) was amazing though. All of the Richard Madeley ones were awful.

Deedaa, as someone with a fine art training ,I agree with you wholeheartedly. The models could probably go home after the first five minutes. They are only needed occasionally. In my day it was, paper, pencil, hand and eye. Or paint and brush of course.

foxie48 Mon 14-Oct-24 20:44:27

Thanks MayBee70 I liked all three of the finalists but I know now which was chosen it was the one painted by the male artist who really captured a likeness. I also really liked the pencil drawing but it's rare for someone not using paint as the medium to be chosen.

I love Portrait Artist of the Year. The celebritites never cease to amaze by their choice of portrait to take home with them. Very often they do seem to choose the least one that resembles them!

It's also on Freesat channel 147. I'll have to watch it when DH isn't home though. He'd find it dull and sit and complain.

Repeats seem to be on Sky Arts every afternoon which is great because I haven’t seen a lot of them.

Esmay Wed 16-Oct-24 14:35:34

I agree all the Richard
Madeley portraits were appalling .
Perhaps he set fire to his choice when he got home !
I think that's what Churchill did with a Sutherland .

grin

I also think that Richard Madeley was short changed with the artists. The other sitters had much better portraits

I wonder how they select who is going to paint who on each programme? Do they just pick the nine names out of a hat or do they consider the range of styles of each artist and mix them up a bit for each sitter.

Based on the Richard Madeley results, It looks like they pick them out of a hat

He deserved it after what he said about hedgehogs the other morning. In an interview about how to protect them he pointed out that they were covered in fleas and should be avoided.

JamesandJon33 Wed 16-Oct-24 20:03:41

Esmay Was it not Churchill’s wife who burned the portrait ?

Esmay Thu 17-Oct-24 06:12:22

It was Lady Churchill , who possibly asked a gardener to burn it .
Churchill was not that well at the time and was declining .

Well said MayBee70. 😊👍🐝

I used to love This Morning when Richard and Judy were on it but I think Judy reined him in most of the time. On his own he’s a loose cannon who opens his mouth before engaging his brain! I seem to be finding the portraits in the repeated old series of much better quality than the current ones.

JdotJ Fri 18-Oct-24 13:49:36

I too thought the portraits of Richard were not at all flattering. I would have been hard pressed to choose one to take home quite frankly.

Hannah Waddingham fared much better with her artists, but I noticed not one of them painted the award she brought along with her, so rather pointless bringing it really.

What do people think of the one the judges chose this week? Yet again their decision totally bemuses me, especially when they talk about capturing a likeness. Imo it either looks like someone or it doesn’t ie if you see it in isolation you will know straight away who it is.

shysal Thu 24-Oct-24 17:25:58

I thought this week's winner was awful! Not having a background in art, I don't understand the judges' reasoning sometimes.

pascal30 Thu 24-Oct-24 17:34:06

I agreed with the judges this week.. interesting work.. and look forward to seeing how he progresses..

I rarely agree with the judges and I most certainly didn't this year. Lord knows what the commission will look like.
