I am so disappointed in The Sound of Music

I have been watching (for the nth time) The Sound of Music, which I first saw in the sixties. When I did a bit more digging, I found that Maria was not engaged as a governess to all the Von Trapp children but as a tutor to one of them.
Even worse! They did not escape over the mountains, toting guitars and singing. They got the train into Switzerland, just like anyone would do.
This is all so traumatic. I don't know if I will sleep tonight.

It makes no difference to the many families who had to flee Europe during WW2- that much we know is real.

And another thread on here seems to think Wolf Hall was a real story too. Yes, based on people who really lived but catalogued in the fiction section, which it is.

What a crazy world were people think the truth is lies and lies the truth...

I thought this thread was meant to be tongue in cheek.
Did I get it wrong?

Peter Pan and Tinkerbell are real too
We all know what happens when we deny that fairies are real.

"Of course I believe in fairies."

I think I need to speak to someone about this. I am very troubled.

Please, please, don't deny that fairies exist
That would be disastrous

We know Wolf Hall is a figment of imagination based on a few facts (and quite unreadable imo).

I wish someone had told me. I'm a bit literal and up my own arse.

I wouldn't let it bother you. This thread has cheered me up!

Unfortunately, I have a bit of a quirky sense of humour, but unless people know me, they don't always get it.
On Sunday, we were doing a head count at church and as I was standing in the porch some people passed by me, after Mass had started.
They asked what I was doing, I said: Oh, I'm counting the latecomers.

The were mortified, that's when I realised that I am not always amusing and some people take things literally. blush

Not quite as interesting as the Sound of Music, but what I want to know is why did the sparrow kill Cock Robin? I thought it was only an unkindness of ravens.

I thought we didn't know how!

My own view is that it was Puss in Boots wot did it.

There were just fur coats in the wardrobe.

There is no such thing as a secret platform between platforms 9 and 10 at Kings Cross Station.

So many shattered illusions.sad

Still, my American niece was extremely happy at 10 or so, to have her picture taken by the sign at KC station that points to Platform 8 and a half, or whatever it is!

Indigo went in the Wrong Wardrobe.

I must have been about ten when I watched The Sound Of Music .
I was impressed that she wore curlers under her wimple .
That's great , I thought if I become a nun I can have long hair !
I've lived next door to two convents :
And I got to know the nuns in the much smaller one .
I can only describe them as wonderful company and lots of fun to be with .

The escape from the Nazis was made up for the film, as the Von Trapps getting on a train to Italy and then moving to America wouldn't have been as exciting. Also Georg von Trapp didn't live in a huge mansion with servants, he lived in a smaller townhouse and was continually short of money.

Oh don’t tell fibs Cumbrianmale56. You’ll be suggesting Maria didn’t make frocks from curtains next

Or that she didn't run up into the mountains, twirling around and trilling away.

As villas go, it wasn't too bad.
The von Trapp villa at Aigen is quite large, picture won't post.

I understand the von Trapps lost money during the Depression. Perhaps they had to downsize. It happens to lots of us.

'Maria von Trapp, 94, the second eldest daughter, center above, with her brother Johannes von Trapp and their sister-in-law Erika von Trapp, was present at the opening on Friday. β€œIt’s very nice to be here,” she said. β€œI feel like home again.”'

I always think Rolf is a confused character who you can tell has been brainwashed by the Nazis and he does waver during the scene in the abbey. Also you do feel sorry for him when the Von Trapps escape as the Quisling, Herr Zeller, probably has some terrible punishment for him.
