Remember When Saint Cliff Richard Dominated Christmas?

The number 1 slot in the charts was almost reserved for him. But he's vanished completely.

I did spot an article about him just a couple of months back and the accompanying photo was not flattering by any means. Age seems to have caught up with him, as it does with all of us.

Pmem. You are making accusations on heresay, not a wise thing to do in print.

I have in my youth met him and he was a very nice, shy lad and friends worked with him and had nothing bad to say about him. I am not a fan, don’t like pop music in the main but do object when people make unsubstantiated slurs.

I was an Elvis fan and once read some unpleasant remarks Cliff had supposedly made about him so never liked him from then. Probably all a load of rubbish, just shows how easily I was influenced in those teenage days.

I’m much preferred Adam Faith thought he was gorgeous

I don't know, but doesn't the very word "creepy" suggest overstepping boundaries? Like something sinister or disturbing.

You've never got 'creepy' vibes from someone without knowing why?

Someone you've never met?

Yes, absolutely! I could name several TV personalities or 'celebrities' for instance who, to me, just have that 'creepy' vibe about them.

AI Overview

Cliff Richard has had four Christmas number one singles in the UK:

Released in 1988, this song reminded listeners of the true meaning of Christmas
Saviour's Day
Released in 1990, this religious song was Richard's second Christmas number one
Living Doll
Originally a number one in 1959, Richard re-recorded the song in 2000 for Comic Relief and it became a number one again

Never liked him- and always found him creepy (and for good reasons).

Me too. He’s very up himself, isn’t he?

Let him grow old for heaven's sake-the man did enough for the music industry in his time.

What a silly thread.

My sister met Jimmy Savile once. She said he was really nice.

Jimmy Saville, different kettle of fish.
Ok, Cliff not found not guilty, just not enough evidence. I accept that. My mistake. I still feel uncomfortable with these unpleasant remarks we make about people though. It always bothers me.
And I think Cliff was innocent anyway.

I do, I think bbc put him through the wringer- we cancelled our licence shortly after

Yes.
Jimmy Savile.

I know few people who found him appealing.

He's not a saint, just like none of us either. But he was found not guilty of those charges.
Cliff had a brilliant career and was highly popular for a long time.
Why be unpleasant about people we don't really know?

But he was found not guilty of those charges.
As Anniebach pointed out, there were no charges. The case was dropped as there was absolutely no evidence and the police response to the allegation was OTT. The police and the BBC paid compensation.

I'm trying to puzzle it out.
Creepy vibes maybe felt by an onlooker, but a categorical statement that "he IS creepy" is different.

Just a word - he wasn’t ‘found not guilty of those charges’. The investigation concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to charge so it never went to court. The CPS wants a minimum likelihood of a successful prosecution in these kind of offences. Investigating and prosecuting allegations of historical sex offences is fraught with difficulty. Prosecuting allegations made in the immediate aftermath is hard enough.

Yes it goes without saying, any false allegation is dreadful
