Remember When Saint Cliff Richard Dominated Christmas?

The number 1 slot in the charts was almost reserved for him. But he's vanished completely.

I did spot an article about him just a couple of months back and the accompanying photo was not flattering by any means. Age seems to have caught up with him, as it does with all of us.

Never liked him- and always found him creepy (and for good reasons).

Witzend Tue 03-Dec-24 13:13:38

I think the dreadful ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ number just about finished him off for Christmas purposes!

Esmay Tue 03-Dec-24 13:27:30

I've never been a fan .

Anniebach Tue 03-Dec-24 13:28:59

What were the good reasons Fleurpepper . ?

Yes, same here.

Oh dear, another trial by media. The liar that accused him, and the BBC that destroyed him, without proof. What punishment did they get, off scot free I believe.

I don't suppose many of us look flattering at the age of 80 odd, unless botoxed to the nines.

I idolised Cliff Richard when I was 12. Learned to appreciate music since then and haven't knowingly paid attention to any pop stars for at least 50 years...

NotAGran55 Tue 03-Dec-24 13:47:24

He only had the Christmas number one twice on his own, and once with The Shadows. Hardly dominating.
The Beetles and LadBaby have more.

He is doing two gigs at The Royal Albert Hall next year btw.

Was this started intentionally as a Cliff bashing thread?

Anniebach Tue 03-Dec-24 13:48:59

I never had any interest, not my music

Seems like it. Nothing more important in the news, really, certainly not Wallace.

Ha ha.
He went to my school in London. Our drama teacher always used to go on about how she was responsible for his stage presence. My friend lived round the corner to him and we used to walk home past his house.
Not really my type of music.

My thoughts too.
Apart from Mistletoe and Wine I can’t remember any Christmas Number Ones by Cliff.
He was harmless enough - clean cut, English, the “bachelor boy” many of us might have like to take home to Mum.
Hands off Cliff!

I was a fan in the 'Living Doll', 'Travelling Light' days but when the Beatles arrived, Cliff left!

petra Tue 03-Dec-24 14:32:45

I was a fan when he recorded Living Doll.
I saw him switch on the Xmas lights in Woolwich.
I’m somewhere in the crowd.

Calendargirl Tue 03-Dec-24 15:01:48

Think he was also number one with ‘Saviour’s Day’.

And around Christmas the Millennium Prayer was another hit.

Kate1949 Tue 03-Dec-24 15:12:25

Why 'with good reason?'. Cliff was cleared of any charges. Goodness me of course he doesn't look like he used to. He's in his 80s.

Anniebach Tue 03-Dec-24 15:16:39

Just realised what ‘with good reasons’ were, nasty

AGAA4 Tue 03-Dec-24 15:52:57

I quite liked him in the early days and went to see Summer Holiday at the cinema. Since then I've found him a bit cheesy.

I liked him too, bought his records and and went to see his films.
But not as much as Elvis.

For all those who 'knew' he was creepy 🤔 - hindsight is wonderful thing. Except that it's not always wonderful if based on speculation.

Cliff was cleared of any charges Yes, well said Kate1949.

The case against him collapsed and he sued the BBC over its coverage, receiving £210,000 in damages.

He also got a £400,000 settlement from South Yorkshire Police, which investigated the original allegation.

I think posters need to be careful as posting false allegations could mean a problem for GNHQ.

And would any of us look like we did when we reach our mid-80s?

Allira Tue 03-Dec-24 16:41:53

Cliff Richard has had four UK Christmas number one singles, including two as a solo artist and one with The Shadows and one with Band Aid II:
Mistletoe and Wine: A solo hit
Saviour's Day: A solo hit
With The Shadows: A Christmas number one with The Shadows
With Band Aid II: A Christmas number one with Band Aid II

Dominated Christmas? Hardly confused

Apparently LadBaby (who?) has had the most Christmas Number 1s. Must have passed me by.

Will it be Ed Davey this year?

rafichagran Tue 03-Dec-24 16:46:29

Allira My thoughts exactly. I was surprised that comment was posted.
I don't particularly like Cliff's music, but he is 80 and of course he looks different.
