I think when Roy Marsden did this story it was in four or six parts? Putting it all into two hours for modern powers of concentration does mean little character development.
If we went back to the seventies we would see how slow life was compared to today.
I enjoyed it but not as much as the 80’s version

I bet he is tho, I imagine he wears striped fleecy pjs with the buttons done up to the neck.😁
You have your own imagination of course…

…..but ultimately boring🥱

Oh, come on!

Give Adam a break!

I bet he’s not so buttoned up between the sheets, given the right companion.

wink

And of course they are set ‘in the past’, though this was only the late 70’s, ( a mere 45 or so years ago shock)

Dalgliesh had a religious upbringing, father a country rector in Norfolk. He was very close to a maiden aunt who left him her cottage on the coast, I think.

Widower, wife and baby son died at his birth.

A published poet, who fits it in around his detective duties.

Erudite, courteous, enigmatic.

And excellent at his job.

Well, I watched it and thought it was ok.

Yes, it’s very slow paced, no car chases, no gabbling into mobile phones, no chomping away at a takeaway sandwich, no ‘f..k this’and ‘f..k that’, all very refined.

I’ve read all the Dalgleish books, but couldn’t remember ‘whodunnit’.

I think Bertie Carvel does a good job with the character, although I always think of Roy Marsden playing him back in the early 80’s.

Yes, he is ‘buttoned up’, but like so many enigmatic men, just needs the love of a good woman to bring him out…..

Agree with all you say. Rather on the lines of Marple. Must admit to never reading the books, perhaps Dalgleish is portrayed closely to the character in them.

Not for me, I tried, but it’s too plodding with wooden acting.

I liked the books because I could imagine the characters. I don’t think it translates well for TV and really not keen on the actor who portrays Dalgleish.
I too, only gave it 20 minutes, then gave up.

I gave it 20 minutes amnd had enough. A commander is unlikely to be solving simple local murders.

I’ve never been a fan of Dalgleish tbh he’s such a stuffy buttoned up character and the plots seem over fanciful.

Oh!

Recorded it. Might try it at some point.

New series on Ch5 , it hasn't held my concentration one bit, the characters are all so half soaked you really feel as if no one really wants to be there.
I have watched him before but don't think I will bother again I am sure the series I watched years ago was much more dynamic or perhaps it was just more in keeping with the times and we are used to a much more faster paced crime drama these days.
