New series on Ch5 , it hasn't held my concentration one bit, the characters are all so half soaked you really feel as if no one really wants to be there.
I have watched him before but don't think I will bother again I am sure the series I watched years ago was much more dynamic or perhaps it was just more in keeping with the times and we are used to a much more faster paced crime drama these days.

Oh!

Recorded it. Might try it at some point.

I’ve never been a fan of Dalgleish tbh he’s such a stuffy buttoned up character and the plots seem over fanciful.

Charleygirl5 Fri 06-Dec-24 22:35:26

I gave it 20 minutes amnd had enough. A commander is unlikely to be solving simple local murders.

Georgesgran Sat 07-Dec-24 07:18:26

I liked the books because I could imagine the characters. I don’t think it translates well for TV and really not keen on the actor who portrays Dalgleish.
I too, only gave it 20 minutes, then gave up.

Well, I watched it and thought it was ok.

Yes, it’s very slow paced, no car chases, no gabbling into mobile phones, no chomping away at a takeaway sandwich, no ‘f..k this’and ‘f..k that’, all very refined.

I’ve read all the Dalgleish books, but couldn’t remember ‘whodunnit’.

I think Bertie Carvel does a good job with the character, although I always think of Roy Marsden playing him back in the early 80’s.

Yes, he is ‘buttoned up’, but like so many enigmatic men, just needs the love of a good woman to bring him out…..

Jaxjacky Sat 07-Dec-24 08:25:50

Not for me, I tried, but it’s too plodding with wooden acting.

Agree with all you say. Rather on the lines of Marple. Must admit to never reading the books, perhaps Dalgleish is portrayed closely to the character in them.

Calendargirl Sat 07-Dec-24 09:30:43

And of course they are set ‘in the past’, though this was only the late 70’s, ( a mere 45 or so years ago shock)

Dalgliesh had a religious upbringing, father a country rector in Norfolk. He was very close to a maiden aunt who left him her cottage on the coast, I think.

Widower, wife and baby son died at his birth.

A published poet, who fits it in around his detective duties.

Erudite, courteous, enigmatic.

And excellent at his job.

…..but ultimately boring🥱

Oh, come on!

Give Adam a break!

I bet he’s not so buttoned up between the sheets, given the right companion.

wink

Oreo Sat 07-Dec-24 09:53:10

I bet he is tho, I imagine he wears striped fleecy pjs with the buttons done up to the neck.😁
You have your own imagination of course…

luluaugust Sat 07-Dec-24 09:54:07

I think when Roy Marsden did this story it was in four or six parts? Putting it all into two hours for modern powers of concentration does mean little character development.
If we went back to the seventies we would see how slow life was compared to today.
I enjoyed it but not as much as the 80’s version

luluaugust Sat 07-Dec-24 09:55:39

My recollection of the 70s is one either slept stark naked or indeed buttoned up to the neck!!!

Boring, no comes across as a very principled, caring man.
Right up my street.

Some recollections may vary 😀

😂
We seem to have sailed into uncharted waters

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 07-Dec-24 10:11:10

I watched it and was disappointed. That is not the story I remember. Some characters have been altered but have kept the same name. I like the actor playing Dalgeish. I think he’s the perfect choice but why can’t they keep to the story.

Just an aside - I met PD James when she came to the Theological College where I worked to gain information on various things for her book. She was very tall.

eazybee Sat 07-Dec-24 11:07:30

The books are so superbly written it is possible to suspend disbelief, but they do not translate well to the screen as the characters are very idiosyncratic, academic and do not generally relate well to modern life.
I do like Bertie Carvel, a very versatile actor, although in this series he is allowed to do little but listen with a pensive look on his face.

Whiff Sat 07-Dec-24 15:57:59

Martin Shaw was very good as Dalgeish you can get it on U drama .
Troppo is very good on Freevee with Thomas Jane .

Ilovecheese Sat 07-Dec-24 16:53:10

I think Bertie Carvel is perfect as old miseryguts Dalgleish

Oldbat1 Sat 07-Dec-24 17:02:03

Dh liked it but i found it quite slow and boring.

charley68 Sat 07-Dec-24 18:38:11

I am with you Calendargirl, I really like Dalgleish, and the actor playing him. I think he is a good fit, and as good as Roy Marsden was. I feel that the TV dramatisations don't do justice to the books, to me they are far more nuanced.
The relationship between his two subordinates, is spot on, although the male sergeant is trying. I loved all the books too, and I thought that PD James was a very talented author in differing genres.
The series is set in a time that is/was very sexist and chauvinistic behaviour was frequently seen.

Romola Sat 07-Dec-24 19:11:01

I did hear P D James on the radio, admitting that she was rather in love with Adam Dalgliesh.
Was the recording thus week very dark? Did anyone else find that?

Curlywhirly Sat 07-Dec-24 20:58:17

Sorry to say, I didn't enjoy it at all. I enjoy most detective programmes/series, but I found this (and a previous Dalgleish series I watched a few months ago) boring and not at all engaging. I think the Roy Marsden series were far better, maybe they were just better stories/productions, I don't know, but I did enjoy those.
