New series to watch please? (The old thread has gone)

Some time ago there was a thread of great series to watch and I've been plowing my way through them.
It seems to have vanished but maybe it's time to start again?

I like quirky, funny, spy and action.
Not a fan of "true life" or "true crime" dramas unless they are focussing on something old like the Cromwell series.

Here's some I've already seen.
Ideas for other good series would be very welcome.
Thank you all!

Orange is the New Black
Black Doves
The Diplomat
Stranger Things
Peaky Blinders
The Man in the High Castle
Taboo
Hinterland
Keeping Faith
The Seaside Hotel
The Magia only Kill in Summer
Happy Valley
Cleddau
Shetland
The Last Kingdom
The Night Manager
Breaking Bad

On Channel 4 streaming. The Danish series ‘Darkness, Those that kill ‘. Two more following series.
If you liked Hinterland there are more Welsh programmes such as ‘Hidden’.

"The Twelve" on ITVX is brilliant.

I have been working my way through these.
Very grateful.
Some of the ones I've found myself have, shall I say, been a bit "lacking"
😂

I've never watched Grantchester and I'm delighted to see there are at least 8 series to watch.. I've watched 1 and 2 and find them very absorbing and visually beautiful.. Quite gentle as well..

I also recommend Walter Presents for the French section

Thank you. I've never watched Grantchester

Hello again,
Just discovered Crá and think it's pretty good so far if anyone else is looking for something to watch.
It's on BBC iplayer.

I’ve just seen that a series called The Little Drummer Girl is available on the iplayer. It’s adapted from John Le Carr’e story. I watched and enjoyed it a few years back.

Thanks. Will try that too.

'The Split' is a fabulous watch
Great acting, believable storylines.
A great cast & I don't want it to end.

Enjoyed "Breakthrough" on Netflix.
Swedish about how a crime was solved using genetics, based on real life.

I'm late to this series, I imagine many who subscribe to Netflix will have seen it. Loving Ripley, very noir compared to The Talented Mr Ripley, which I also enjoyed at the time. Conjures up the era, 1950s early 60s filmed in black and white, much of it in Italy. Slow moving, but that doesn't detract. Andrew Scott, as always, perfect such a good actor. I binned Castaway, Channel 5 when it became apparent, after a promising start, it was a load of garbage during episode, 2. The contrast between the former and the latter, is staggering maybe illustrated best by how intrigue can be cranked up slowly with tension as taut as piano wire, which holds the attention far more, than the implausibility of a plot, overload in every scene. It's so hard to find something really good to watch, Ripley's definitely one such series imo.

I watched the Twelve. Yes. Very interesting. Slightly formulaic though.
I'd given Ripley a miss to be honest.
Thanks again.

If you liked the "Old Italy" of Ripley TerriBull you may like The Mafia Only Kills in Summer - I loved that series which had real footage cut in as "contemporary". It was beautifully shot, through the eyes of a child.
It made quite an impact on me and I can't recommend it enough.
NB - not an action thriller - more of a drama.

Critical Incident. This was excellent, 1 series 6 episodes. An Australian police drama, a bit different to the norm.

On ITVX.

My son has been telling me to watch Endeavour, a prequel to Morse, for some time and I finally started watching series one yesterday. My son is right , it is superb and will keep me going for some time. It is on ITVX.

Blooming heck Whiff! I'm exhausted just reading your list.
I tend to fall asleep half-way through most dramas & end-up watching them again the next night until I doze off at a different point during a supposedly thrilling, highly- recommended drama!
You must have some stamina or maybe you don't drink too much like my good self. 😚

Whiff Tue 04-Feb-25 20:12:15

Ilovedogs I watch TV on catch up as I always fall asleep watching TV. This way I never miss out. Have other lists for other channels . I like to binge watch series over a few days . Plus end up watching a film over 2 nights but I can always go back so don't miss it all .

NotSpaghetti Wed 05-Feb-25 00:45:58

Thank you Whiff!

Not series but two excellent films I have watched this week.... The Secret Scripture and The Six Triple Eight (True Story) both on Netflix. Well worth a watch.

Like many series, Grantchester ‘went off’ after the original vicar, Sidney, left.

They have dragged it on, but it’s past its sell by date now.
