The song also uses audio from an interview the Prime Minister gave to Good Housekeeping magazine April, in which he said of one pensioner: “She told me that she doesn’t get out of bed till midday because she doesn’t want to turn the heating on.”

Middleton, who was raised by his grandparents for a number of years, says he has seen first-hand how damaging Labour’s controversial policy has been. “Older people do feel the cold more,” he says. “My gran had a heart attack and her medication makes her blood vessels constrict so she is always freezing. Even in summer she’s bundled up by the fire. After 14 years of the Tories we were all fed up, and we thought things would be different under Labour, but it’s way worse than anyone thought.”

(Sung to the tune of ‘it’ll be Lonely This Christmas’ by a band called Mud from the 70’s).

I never set out to get to Christmas number one – that wasn’t my plan at all,” says Chris Middleton, 33, a freelance writer from Newcastle who wrote the lyrics for the track. “I saw something on Twitter a couple of months ago about trying to do a Christmas song for pensioners and the hook of the chorus just came to me. Lonely This Christmas is my favourite Christmas song so that’s probably why.

The initial target was to raise £5,000 with the song via a JustGiving page – “which I never thought we’d get” – but it has now exceeded £24,000, with donations still coming. It will all be donated to Age UK. “It’s just coming in from all over the place now,” he says. “I can’t keep track of it.” Middleton says any revenue he gets from streams and downloads will be distributed among smaller charities which help the elderly.

Sir Keir Starmer has said he has no regrets about the decisions he has made in the past six months and would do nothing differently.

The Prime Minister made the comments as he answered questions from the liaison committee of senior MPs from all parties for the first time.

Even though it is No1 on downloads the BBC won’t play it.

nanna8 Fri 20-Dec-24 00:02:26

To be fair I don’t think the BBC should play it because it is the ‘national’ broadcaster and relies to a certain extent on the government’s approval. I have listened to it and whilst it has a point of view it is a bit over the top.

OldFrill Fri 20-Dec-24 00:20:43

The BBC banning it means it's even more prominent in the media, same with every tune it's banned. I always think they should Relax, Don't Do it when it comes to bans.

Exactly how many? You sound as if you have authorised access to the required info and so you have a duty to back up your statement accordingly. I demand the numbers and your sources.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 20-Dec-24 06:29:06

To be honest I think I agree with the BBC using their discretion over this. Years ago, when Thatcher died “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” shot up to No.2 in the charts and they refused to play it.

I’m glad monies from this are going to charity. Nice gesture.

“New figures released today show an extra 42,500 households are now in receipt of Pension Credit, and therefore the Winter Fuel Payment, since the government launched its pension credit awareness campaign. “ GOV.UK 28th Nov 2024.

I do like sources to be attributed.
I did ask about the original posting, but have been ignored. If there is no context to text taken from elsewhere it’s sometimes difficult to have an opinion.

I heard that interview yesterday- it was played on GB news, I had it on in my car

Sorry J52 I thought you was asking about KS quote in his interview.

Freya5 Fri 20-Dec-24 08:46:00

That's good, Mum got it , 28pence per week. That'll certainly pay some heating bills. Rather like the 83 pence you get on reaching the age of 80.
I'm sure the amount payed out will exceed the amount taken off the pensioners.

I read the report - in full - you have just given. It doesn't come to the conclusion you suggest at all

summary is
"While this means the change is unlikely to save the Treasury as much money as it hoped, it has meant a life changing boost in income for hundreds of thousands of pensioners living in poverty."

Wyllow3 Fri 20-Dec-24 11:58:35

BTW, agree above with those who suggest is completely not suitable to play on the BBC, as FGT points out it can cut many ways and the BBC cannot be expected to play any strong party-political songs.

Those pensioners could have claimed it anyway, otherwise they would not have been given it now.

Although I think the Labour government shot itself in the foot with WFA cancellation, I am pleased that the move has prompted so many more people to claim pension credit. The furore about it caused more people to think about applying for pension credit. It is a more targeted way of providing help.

I completely agree.

Shinamae

I don’t think Starmer is arrogant or ignorant, he’s more than aware that his policies are unpopular, and he warned us all time and again things would be very tough.

I don’t agree with the way WFA was withdrawn but I also don’t think it should EVER have been universal.

I’m still prepared to give Starmer a chance, after 1-2 years I expect things to be more positive, or should I say I hope đŸ€žđŸ€ž

Have a friend who for years would not try to claim Pension Credit as she thought she would not get it! Now tried & got it! All the years of struggling when she did not need to is very annoying.

Babamaman Sun 22-Dec-24 11:35:41

Lots of things the BBC haven’t done and don’t do!
That’s why we had pirate radio stations!
That’s why Savill & the likes got away with what they did for so many years!
We all know the BBC is antisemitic with reporters such as Bowens, Lutrec and the likes. Their anti Israel reporting is beyond a disgrace.
So never surprised with the rotten BBC

Yet the BBC had no problem playing "Stand Down Margaret" - an anti-Thatcher song by The Beat. It was played on at least two programmes Old Grey Whistle test and Cheggers plays Pop

I do not think the BBC should act as pro-government censor
which they do all the time
Not the same as when Maggie died - that was personal and could have been hurtful to her family
Die-hard Labour supporters will never see anything wrong with this government
Until....

I am a life long labour voter but I'm not a supporter of New Labour Mark 2.
Winter Fuel Allowance should have been means tested from the start. Why should people like me who have a private pension as well as my stae pension get it when there are thousands of young families whose need is greater?
